Note~I have been told that the "A" is short sound, even though the mouth opens long and the cheeks drop down. So it can be confusing. Just know the WORD is correct it is always "Arm" or "Father" so you do not say "Apple, or At" which can sound more nasal. Open your moth to create the "Aw" with all your a's. Tip*Say "Arwen", to help remind you of the open sound. This is a British sounding "Aw" sound in English. Keep in mind...just make it very OPEN sounding like a Brit. ;) UPDATE~someone caught my mistake of writing Mae Govannen, with the "e" flipped with the "a". I apologize for that confusion and dyslexic moment!

This is so cool, I’m from Finland and this is exacly how we pronounce vowels. I knew Tolkien used finnish language as inspiration but this was suprisingly close! Now I’m wondering that maybe it is already a sign to the elven words that I was born speaking finnish. 🌟
@atanvardo57302 жыл бұрын
The Elvish language she is talking about is Sindarin, which was not actually inspired by Finnish (but by Welsh and Old Norse). Tolkien's Finnish-inspired Elvish language is Quenya, instead. But the vowels in Sindarin are pronounced the same as in Quenya, I think that's why you thought Sindarin was Finnish-inspired.

I would like to point out that Vedui doesn’t mean “hello”. Hello is “Ai!” Vedui is the lenited form of Medui meaning “final, last”. I believe this line comes from the scene (in the book) when Glorfindel meets Aragorn/Strider. Glorfindels line is “Ai! Na vedui Dúnadan.” Meaning “Hi/hello! At last Dúnadan (man of the west)”

Sindarin is so strange sometimes, mostly because when consistently spoken there is a distinct rhythm to the language, if you don't follow that rhythm when speaking you can mess up. Take the first one "Mea Govannen Mellon nin" - trying saying that while randomly slowing down between words then speeding up again it comes out so weirdly haha
@atanvardo5730 Жыл бұрын
I guess you were talking about the germinated consonants "nn" in "govannen" and "ll" in "mellon". This makes the language sound dynamic.

You say the correct vowel values in the beginning, but the long and short you describe as English has used to think of them, and in English the length is petty much never purely the only reason 2 vowels are set apart. Or would you say pull has a short u/oo, and pool has the long u/oo? That's pretty much what it should be. Like English a in cat is not (just) short compared to the a in car. The first is also frontal and the second back sound. That means where our tongue makes them. These both are similar in that the tongue makes them in the bottom of the mouth.

Hi again! How do you say "Happy birthday" in sindarin. My friend is having a birthday this weekend so I want to surprise her
@atanvardo57303 жыл бұрын
2 years later, but here it is... "Happy birthday" in Sindarin would be _edinor glassui_ , which translates literally "happy/merry/joyful anniversary" -- _edinor_ means "anniversary" (in Sindarin adjectives are usually placed after the nouns they describe -- but the opposite order is also possible in music or poetry, or for special emphasis). I must say that the adjective _glassui_ is not attested in Tolkien's writings. It was rather derived from _glass_ ("joy"), which is attested; but _glassui_ is widely accepted as a word for "joyful", "merry", "happy". Another Sindarin word meaning "joy" is _gell_ ("joy", "triumph"); but the adjective _gellui_ (derived from _gell_ ) is already attested with the meaning "triumphant", so it would not be used to mean "joyous", "merry", "happy", as in "happy birthday". For now, _edinor glassui_ is the best (probably the only) option to say "happy birthday" in Sindarin.

How did you get suilad from greetings????
@Seraphina-Rose4 жыл бұрын
"Suil" is understood to mean "greeting" from something Tolkien wrote, "Arassuil", a word believed to be derived from "Aran" and "Suil". From that, people conjecture a possible Sindarin verb "suila-" for "to greet", with gerund form "suilad" being "a greeting". It is not pronounced like "sweeLAD". Tolkien wrote a guide to pronunciation, the emphasis here belongs on the first syllable. "ui" sounds like smooching an "oo" and an "ih" together into one syllable. Try saying "SOO-ih-lad" in just two syllables. I geeked out hard core on Sindarin when the movies came out.

How do you say lets eat, good luck and are you going? In sindarin
@ElvenWisdom6 жыл бұрын
Since Quenya was the "root" of Elvish, some words or phrases are the same in Sindarin. let us come eat = Quenya "me tulil enno mat" good luck = Quenya "almare" or "Sindarin" galu Are you going? = ? needs to be rephrased a bit to match up to Elvish, they would say more like "let us go" or "come let us go", not a lot of questions since they understand each other so well telepathically.
