I've looked at many tutorials on pull backs but it wasn't until i went through yours that i finally understood how to do it. I love how you break down the steps and also the detailed explanation on how to bend and also distribute your weight on the standing leg. Within 15 minutes i was able to get the pull switch with all the sounds. Still have a ways to go to really get it right but so excited to finally make progress. So happy i found your videos-- I'm going to be going through all of them! Thanks Jenne.

I have trouble doing them but I found this video to have the best explanation! I sadly never really got to practice them at first due to space but now I can. All the other videos explain it as just do 2 brushes and land. But this one breaks it down so much easier!! Thank you Jenne ❤️🌸

Oh my god, thank you soo much! I was trying to learn an online tap combo and there were pull backs in it and had to google what that even is. But thanks to you it only took 7 minutes to get my very first (slow) one.

Now I feel that one day, I can master them! 💪 I’ve had some tapdance classes when I was 15, now I’m almost 50 and I picked it up through KZbin 4 months ago, after I’ve lost 20 kilos. I love it and I practice every evening! The only thing, I had to do some lipreading here, the sound was sooo soft… but, thank you so much, again!

This is a fabulous, innovative way to teach this step. I’ve been tapping for 45 years and counting and have seen many people teach double pullbacks (these are doubles to me), but never this way. What an effective way to get a student to hear and FEEL all the sounds successfully through the learning process. The old “learn at the barre” or “learn in a chair” technique is so limited bc once you are standing without a barre, you have to relearn everything with your unsupported full body weight. I’m not a teacher (just never stopped tapping for enjoyment), but I am guest teaching these next week. Looking forward to giving this a go. Brilliant!

It took me a long time to figure out that this method of teaching produced the best results in my students (looking at it as physics just makes sense to me, and I see it make sense to my students too!) and I'm so glad that you like it! Well, I gave this method a try and eventually combined it with the barre to help the students get the pull-switch off the ground a bit more. They have a way to go before they get the hang of it, but this was so helpful in demonstrating the weight-shifting and how the sounds are made beyond just “right left right left.” I also focused a bit on thinking of them as pullUPS so they would get enough air under their feet. I learned pullbacks forever ago and that studio really drove it home that we needed to stay light on our feet, keep the ribcage up and go vertical, not back. Doing this across the floor took forever, lol. Thanks for a great tutorial and all the great videos. I bet your students have a blast in your classes!

I learned pullbacks years ago with feet that stay together the whole time (If that makes sense - two sounds) - also learned one footed pullbacks (yuck), but I’ve never seen them like this! I believe I’ve heard you call them broken pullbacks - is that correct?

I call them double pullbacks. If I say it is a "broken" pullback to me that means the rhythm is broken up and each count is spaced out. Having the feet go separately but in regular rhythm is a double to me. But that is the fun thing about tap: so many names for the same steps!

I am able to do a single pullback but I can't do multiple in a row. Any tips? I love pullbacks but can't seem to figure out how to do more than one!

Multiple in a row requires a slightly different technique because you have to go from just the balls of your feet and you can't have your heels to shift your weight into. I can do a video on this very soon for you to help explain it better! I'll try to release it the week of Halloween if I can!

I have a question! So I think I'm starting to get a hang of the pull-switch, however when I land on the other foot, I keep landing on it like "toe-heel," instead of just landing on my full foot. This is creating an unnecessary extra sound before that last step. Any advice on how I can alleviate this? 😅 Thanks! ❤️

The best thing to practice is landing on just the ball of your foot. Don't let your heel touch when you land. That will give you the best sound possible. :)

@@JenneVermes it took a while to readjust my balance to landing on just the ball of my foot, but i think i got that now! ☺️ thank you! my next question is, how are you able to control the speed of the “pull-switch” move? i’m trying to go a little quicker and work on my separation of sounds, so I tried to do the Addams Family theme as you mentioned, but I can’t seem to slow down the pull-switch enough for it to sound like... well, the addams family theme lol. any tips there? Thanks again!
