I talk about how I learned to ride wheelies on my SE Racing Big Ripper. I cover bike set up and geometry to feathering brakes.

I heard that having a larger and wider tire helps with learning to do wheelies. For me, I simply won't fit a 20' so I went with a 27.5. It felt large sitting on the bike in the shop. I took it out for a test ride and was sold on buying a Big BMX. Just my thoughts.

Hey, thanks Rick! Good luck on them. Take your time and give your brain time to adjust to the feeling of that weightless balance point. Wheelies are a learned feeling because once you hit that balance point, you're not really thinking about the tap/pedal mechanic. It's like shifting a car if you've driven a stick/manual transmission. I had to learn the sequence of clutch, shift, gas, release clutch - but now it I just do it without even thinking. Wheelies are the same thing.

That’s a really common question. Both brands make a solid bike at that price point. Both are strong bikes. I’ve never ridden a Throne myself but my friends who have love them. The integrated chain tensioners on the throne are nice. Big flyers are comfy. You’ll be happy with either option for basic riding and wheelies. They’ll both hold up to abuse with some minor upgrades. I run the stock pads that came on the Big Ripper. You don’t need them to lock or stop the wheel. You need them to slow your looping out and guide the front wheel back into that balance point area is all. I’ve always been a fan of a brand called mathhauser or something similar to that spelling 🤘

Would you recommend anything different or just practice. Gears I believe stock is 39t front and 17t rear. Thanks again for the time and help!
@BigBikeBMX
@BigBikeBMX 4 жыл бұрын
timZ Channel thanks Tim. Practice is what it really comes down to. You’re training your brain to feather the brake almost involuntary while you pedal. Like shifting a car - you just do it after awhile without thinking. I’d go with small increments in the back. One tooth at a time or maybe two at a time for the front sprocket. Changing one in the freewheel is the same as changing two in the sprocket for example. I think RideOutSupply only goes up to 17 so I’d look at lowering the sprocket size to a 37 or so🤘

Lower gears, taller bars, laid back seat post, = super easy to wheelie. I built a 26" beach cruiser with the intention to turn it into a wheelie machine. Now its running a 25" tall 40" wide handle bar, 43" sissy bar, and a 21.5" flaming banana seat. I decided since I am 49, I better have a few gears. So its a 7 speed. I had to buy a tandem rear shift cable, so I could get it to the shifter. I love riding wheelies on my cruiser!!! 😎

What gear ratio are you running? I just bought a big flyer to start riding again. Im 31 and havent rode bmx since i was 14-15. Already having issues with the SE bottom bracket so got a profile racing crank but trying to figure out what sprocket/ gear ratio to run

I run stock on my big flyer but I did get a bigger freewheel when I first got back into it. I suggest a 17tooth if you want to get back and wheelie. For long rides - 16 is great.

Great video. Have you only tried SE big BMX? What about Cult or Sunday 29”. Do you think aluminum is better than tried and true chromoly?
@BigBikeBMX

Cult and Sunday make great bikes. I own a Sunday Model C actually. I grew up on 4130 bikes. I don’t honestly care about the material as much as I care about geometry. Cult and Sunday produce a big bike but they’re not investing in the scene or sponsoring big bike riders so nobody really knows much about their bikes. I prefer to spend my money on SE / Throne / Haro - brands that are investing in the sport of big BMX bikes. I have a buddy who rides a cult and loves it. My opinion is ride the bikes and brands you love. Just ride. That’s what it’s all about in the end - enjoying bikes🤘

Isaac Irvine AgreeD. Well said. Just trying to figure out which bike is going to be best for me since there is no BMX scene here in Vancouver and the only BMX bike store just closed in March because of Covid. So I really don’t think I’ll be able to try a bike before I buy it. I’m riding a 1982 26” Maruishi right now. bmxmuseum.com/bikes/maruishi/77574. PK ripper looks awesome, but don’t know about size. I’m 6”3 215lbs. Thought I had it narrowed down to Sunday High C or Big ripper but Om Duro and PK ripper look rad but both 27.5.

The OM Duro XL feels nice. It's 4130. Doesn't feel small to me at all. I know Matt Rickard rides for SE Bikes and he's 6'5 tall. He rides a Big Ripper with 10" rise bars and has the best bike-control in the game. The Sunday High C with some taller bars will also feel pretty good looking at the geometry. My buddy Reck rides a Cult Devotion 29 with 9" bars. He's a taller guy and says it feels perfect. Best advice. Go with a 29 from Cult, Sunday, or SE and add some taller bars and you'll be good. I feel pretty confident saying that.

Isaac Irvine that’s great advice. Thank you. Just did some calling. I can get my hands on a Sunday and cult right now. SE would have to be a special order. I really appreciate your time, responses and videos. Thank you.

Awesome, I was always the bicycle wheelie king in my hood (motorcycles too). I could wheelie a 20" in 2nd grade. BTW...I'm 55 (most guess late 30s -early 40's) just got back into riding. Dig your vids man.

Are you sitting down when you pull up and pedal to get the wheelie up?
@BigBikeBMX
@BigBikeBMX 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Push down on the crank with your dominant (strongest) leg while pulling up and back with your arms to get back into the wheelie in one smooth / even motion. Good luck!

Are you lifting off the pedal then smashing on it or is your foot always on the pedal and you just push harder with the dominate foot then pull up. Also what clock position is the crank when you mash on it to pop the wheelie
@BigBikeBMX
@BigBikeBMX 4 жыл бұрын
great question. Its always on the pedal and I'd say I start pushing down at the 1-2 o'clock position. Also, I'm pulling up AND back on the bars at the same time. Thanks for watching and for the question - Isaac

i always just used my middle finger on the brake - now seeing this, i tried two fingers and found that its easier to "dose" the back brake - still cant wheelie more than cpl of meters - no time for practise - but will keep doing it that way in the future.. keep it up bro
