Why we put the "Y" in the middle

The past tense suffix "-di" was "-idi" in old Turkish so when we combine "-meli" and "-idi" we need a buffer letter between them. git + meli + y + idi + m In time "idi" changed and became only "-di" but we continued adding the buffer letter . git + meli + y + di + m

I'm a bit confused with the usage of the accusative suffix, it seems quite random at times. For example, usually we use it for a particular thing / person / etc, but for 'O sınav için daha fazla ders çalışmalıydı' you didn't use 'sinavı' despite it being about a particular exam that he should have studied for. I don't quite understand it.

"Sınav" is not the direct object in that sentence. Take a look at the verb. The verb "study/ders çalış" is not about the exam. If the sentence was "He should have passed that exam" then it would be " O sınavı geçmeliydi" because the verb "pass/geç" is used for "sınav".

Please can you explain the usage in third person plural question form. Should we say : onlar sinav için daha fazla ders calışmalıydılar mı or onlar sinav için daha fazla ders çalişmalılar mıydı?

@@snezanakatic279 "çalışmalılar mıydı? " is correct. But in order to avoid this confusion you should know that "-ler" is optional and you can use the same sentence for "o" and "onlar". O gitmeli miydi? Evet, o gitmeliydi Onlar gitmeli miydi? Evet, onlar gitmeliydi.

Its about the tense. Remember, in Continuous Tense we say "Sen okula gidiyorsun" and in Past Tense we say "Sen okula gittin".
