Thank you for the weekly hour which I look forward to and try to catch live or a little later in the day - it's daytime here in India. A tiny thing to point out: as I recall the word is saponification, the first vowel being a not o. I checked again now and it does seem to be so. I also vaguely remember a group of substances called saponins found in some foods like some millets perhaps the reason these foods should be washed and rinsed well before cooking. Anyhow thanks a lot for all that you all do. Regards and good wishes.

My 13 year old nephew has type one diabetes. Stumbled upon your page last week and have been following. Is this way of eating something i can recommend to him to bring up to his doctor? He moved in with our family within the year and it hurts to see him taking insulin and always not being able to go on our weekend getaways with my kids due to worrying about him and his condition. Thanks in advance

I have never understood why plants don’t have vitamin B 12 if they have all the others? I thought they were a package deal.
@suzybear225 ай бұрын
If you pick a fruit or veg off its plant, brush off the dirt, and eat it, it does have B12, but in modern times we sanitize our foods to remove all traces of dirt so all the B-12 has been washed away.

8:05 scary excuse, as I've been vegan for many years and had a diagnosed Zinc deficiency. As I also mentioned on another video, Dr Fuhrman suggests adding a Zinc supplement to a vegan diet. Would his reasoning for doing so be to get people to eat meat?

I have read that absorption of fat soluble vitamins is one of the functions of bile; i.e. the constant message from the vast majority of health authority's that you must eat dietary fat to ensure absorption of fat soluble vitamins. I would be interested in any comments from viewers and also Dr McDougall's comments on this key point

Dr M, I am on very strict plant based whole food diet with zero processed food in my diet. My platelets have gone high and are 650, what do you suggest?
@chrisboulton68625 ай бұрын
I meant to say that it is bile that does the job (not dietary fat) and that the often stated role of dietary fat to absorb fat soluble vitamins is incorrect

Hello Dr. McDougall. Would it ok to supplement things like potassium, magnesium (lotion), zinc, selenium and molybdenum just as a way to cover bases? Thanks 🙏🏻
@smallfootprint29615 ай бұрын
But why? Why take more than your body requires?
@Clarkfamilyorchards5 ай бұрын
I for one eat a lot of bananas but I don’t know if it’s enough from my diet to cover my potassium needs. I guess I’m most worried about zinc and magnesium because I doubt I get what I should in a day of those two. I notice the magnesium lotion I use towards the end of the day seems to help me get to bed.

@@DangDang-ex1em yeah I did, and I know he advocates for not over supplementing. Just wondering those specifics things would hurt. I know he says you just pee out excess. But there are certain supplements that are actually harmful if taken (think vitamin D or A).

11:10 white rice promotes beriberi due to lack of Vitamin B1: so why do you sometimes promote the Kempner white rice and fruit diet? Why does that diet use white rice and not brown rice?
@kevinwilson33375 ай бұрын
Wow !!!! I actually was just thinking about this lol
@laylaaissaoui-hester76385 ай бұрын
The diet would likely not last long enough to cause any deficiencies. I also think it's to prove that you don't even need complex carbs to reverse diabetes type 2.
@DangDang-ex1em5 ай бұрын
The reason white rice was used is the lower protein content when compared to brown rice. Kempner was caring for very sick people and wanted to protect the kidneys. The kidneys primary function is to excrete nitrogen. Nitrogen = protein = rice bran = brown rice.
@DangDang-ex1em5 ай бұрын
JM promotes Kempner as Doctor who used a high carbohydrate diet to cure people. It was a different diet to the McDougall diet because Kempner was caring for the sickest of the sick.
@immortalitron5 ай бұрын
To my knowledge the Kempner diet is fortified with vitamins and minerals. It is not just the white rice, sugar and juices.

Have there been any epidemiology studies done on populations subjected to these folic acid fortification with regard to changes in heart disease and cancer prevalence?

How about lectins, oxalate and anti nutrients.
@Mrm19851005 ай бұрын
Your intestine can deal with them by breaking them down, especially as you build up the right gut microbiome. I believe phytates are also anti-cancer.
@Mrm19851005 ай бұрын
@@HiloBoiz808 We have a microbiome that digests them. Oxalates can be an issue if you eat huge amounts of uncooked spinach, such as giant green smoothies everyday. There are a couple of other vegetables, and plant foods, which are high in oxalates and if eaten uncooked in huge amounts can be an issue. Some people also have a gut issue linked to oxalates and absorb more and need to avoid certain foods.

@@sherril.562 Yes, I think I meant phytates... my bad... I was reading some of Ray Peat's stuff and his follower, Dinkov. They think green veggies are the devil... they also think white rice is good, but I assume that is because it has the bran removed, thus getting rid of all phytates... I read that arsenic IS a concern with white rice, washing/soaking helps, but does not eliminate. Dr. Berg (Scientologist?) thinks they are great... but... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7600777/ I am totally confused... maybe you can give me the bottom line om veggies, potatoes, etc!
