More like this please, Alexa. Content = excellent; Presentation = excellent; Star Quality = absolutely! Must remember Salade (lettuce) is a faux ami and does not mean the same as salad in English (a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish, or other ingredients}.

J'aime beaucoup cette leçon. Je ne connaissait pas le sens du mot "courgette". In English it's zucchini! 😃
@saguaro22313 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kelly; that one had me wondering....

CORRECTION: Americans call it Zucchini, the English/British call it a courgette.
@kelljanesmith3 жыл бұрын
@@ezekielthemack I didn't know that! Wow 😮

@@ezekielthemack Along the same lines, people should probably also know that Corriander is the proper name for what Americans call Cilantro.
@teknopathetik79862 жыл бұрын
@@cjnoffz3351 The word "coriander" derives from Old French, which comes from from Ancient Greek, and possibly derived from "a bed bug" on account of its bed bug-like smell. Due to French influence, this word is used in the UK. "Cilantro" is the Spanish word for coriander, also deriving from coriandrum. It is the common term in American English for coriander leaves, due to their extensive use in Mexican cuisine. So basically, the British took it from French and North America took it from Spanish, so there really isn't a "correct" version. Either way, English speakers are using a loanword based on which culinary culture was influencing them more. And the root itself is not believed to be Greek originally, but a loan word from some other ancient language family, so it is not even that the Greek "owned" the word to begin with either. "Correct" is a tricky issue. If we go by number of native speakers utilizing the term "cilantro" or "coriander", there are about 60 million native British speakers and 300 million native American English speakers, so by sheer math "Cilantro" wins out. Or we could look at the number of 2nd language learners and their preferences (to which there are more British English learners than American English Learners). We cool break it down into dialects and count those (Scotts, vs Irish, vs Black American vs ...). We could look at world-Englishes in India etc, number of countries with a strong preference such as Canada and Australia, historical records showing which is older or more stable, current trends to see which might win out in 200 years, computers to do corpus analysis to see which term is more common globally in speech or writing, or the number of French and Spanish speakers as they are the loanword source, or etc .. "Correct" is complicated.
