Can Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Locate a Pipe Leak? - PART 1

In this video I discuss the possibility of using ground penetrating radar (GPR) to detect a leak in a water or sewer pipe. The approach I outline here makes use of GPR's ability to view the subsurface as a 2D profile into the ground.
Two important points about this approach: 1) the GPR should collect data in the direction of the pipe and directly on top of it if possible, and 2) water should flow through the pipe for some time before a distortion of the reflection will occur.
In PART 2, I show how to use time-slices (or 3D visualization) to not only identify the leak location, but the direction of the leak plume. This is also an important technique for identifying contamination plumes when a fuel tank leaks.

Excuse me, the video takes the water pipe as an example. Is it available to detect leakage in gas pipe? What're the differences?

Hi, Thanks for the question. It would be difficult to detect a leak in a gas pipe. The density of gas is much different than water to the distortion of the pipe where the leak is happening would not be to significant.

Can GPR detect the degree to which septic gravel has become clogged? Our septic field is 46 years old, and is not draining. One septic pro says to use hydrojetting to clear the pipes. Another says hydrojetting won't help if the primary problem is that the gravel has become clogged. If the gravel is not clogged, it will be distinct from the soil/earth, so it seems they (and the pipe) would be visible on the GPR viewer. If the gravel is clogged, it will still be different from the soil/earth, but less different - the distinction will be harder to detect. Would it work to say: If the gravel is 100% clear, the contrast will be ___. If the gravel is clogged (0% clear), the contrast will be ____. The contrast is ____, so therefore the gravel is __% clear. Rocks of various sizes would be distributed throughout the [soil/earth]. If the analysis is done over a large enough area, would it be possible to filter out rocks / ignore sections with significant rocks?

Still possible. Actually might be better because the soils may otherwise be dry where the leak is. Gpr is really mapping contrasts. Good luck and thanks for the comment!!

How important is the soil velocity in gpr survey as i am using mala gpr in saudi arabia for almost 5 years and i hardly get any huperbolas. Maybe something is wring with my settings or i’m using wrong soil velocity..?

Now is this a hand held gpr or push gpr using radio detection gpr ?

Thanks for the question David. In this context I'm talking about pushcart gpr. However it is also useful technique with handheld in concrete i suppose.
