Metal is special - it actually absorbs the radar pulse and re-transmits it back to the antenna. That is why you typically get such a strong response from metal (and usually ringing as well). The non-reversal of polarity (sorry for the double-negative!) is important for its own sake. I think new FRP bars might also be a higher dielectric than concrete, and so would be expected to give a non-reversal of polarity, but the response won't be as strong as metal. So the basic concept - higher dielectric gives non-reversal, lower dielectric gives reversal - holds. I just get a little picky at the use of the word "reflection" when it comes to metal (although the word otherwise pertains for all other materials). If the metal is very, very thin (as in wire mesh), then you won't necessarily get the strong response I've seen from rebar, but that is, presumably, a more advanced topic. Having just written these sentences, I guess I'm more comfortable with "response" than I am with "reflection"... :)

hi professor, it's crazy how good and accurate is this video. I'm currently taking a Geophisics exam, with a big focus on application to monitor landslides, they explained us the GPR method very quickly to be able to do some measurement on the field. The problem is that they had to cut half of the program to be able to finish on time, so i had some gap in the theory of GPR. Thanks a lot for the perfect explanation

@@Kapilthakur_bulandshahr great question. The propagation velocity has nothing to do with the system, it has everything to do with the material itself. Thanks for demonstrating & explaining. I want to make a magnetic locator detection target to put on the end of a long plumber's snake that I can run through some plastic landscaping drainage pipe so I can find both where it is clogged and, eventually, where the other end is buried. I'll be using a CST/berger Magna-Trak 200 magnetic locator, and I think I could follow the location of the locator target as my assistant feeds the plumber's snake into the plastic drainpipe. Which would give me a more definitive detection as the layer of dirt & rock over the drainpipe gets thicker: a strong magnet or a ferrous iron target?

@@Canihelpyouz I believe that is correct because the ds2000 is only recording the nmea output from the GPS. So if you preprogram it with the GPS software and indicate how tall the pole is, it should send a message that places the coordinate and elevation back to the ground. But ask Leica to verify.

Hi Dan, We have been researching GPR for the last few weeks with a view to purchasing a vehicle mounted system. 88% of roads in Australia are unsealed dirt roads, most of the rest use ultra thin asphalt over approx 150mm to 300mm gravel then natural soils Additional information such as ground water table would be a possible advantage but less of a priority in our case. Air coupled antenna seem a safer option given the poor running surfaces we often encounter would destroy a ground coupled antenna. Do you have any recommendations on the best configurations of antenna ? I've read 2Ghz air coupled and 900 Mhz ground coupled is a good combination. Could we substitute the 900Mhz ground coupled for a air coupled antenna and mount it on the same arm.? Also is there a minimum distance the antennas should be located from a vehicle ?
