Here's a tip: For those of you with graphic T's, or anything that was screen printed, turn them inside out when you wash them. This will save the pictures on the t-shirt because they wont be rubbing against everything else inside the washer.
@Vardagaladhiel10 жыл бұрын
My one tip (that I haven't already seen someone suggest but I might've missed someone saying this already) is to turn your clothes inside out before you wash them. Obviously things like socks don't really matter but it can really help to protect printed tshirts (it would've protected my printed polka dot skinny jeans as well if I had remembered to do it...) and it can help to reduce pilling so your clothes stay newer looking for longer.

So here's what I do: 1- Stuff all the clothes in the washing machine. White, black and rainbow coloured. 2- Is this enough soap? Let's put a bit more just in case. 3- I left the fabric softener in my room. I mean, I'm sure it's not that important, right? 4- Why is there SO MANY options? I'm gonna go for the most used one, crowd intelligence anyone? 5- Become religious for the 30 minutes it takes for the laundry to be done.
@vesper77505 жыл бұрын
My thoughts as a Swedish person: 1 - I have accidentally washed some stuff mixed together and all lighter beige and white garments got a blueish gray hue. :( 2 - Soap? At least if you put dish soap in the dishwasher it WILL foam out on your whole floor (been there). I don't know if you've tried it in the washing machine but I would be a little careful about it at least. 3 - I haven't used fabric softener for years now. Best decision ever, the laundry detergent makes the laundry smell amazing anyways and I have really grown to like the stiffness that comes with newly washed towels and the alike. 4 - True, so many options. Driving me nuts every time. 5 - 30 minutes? Is this another American thing with their supersize super fast washing machines? lol. My washing takes from about 1h 40mins up to 3h. If you rent an apartment in Sweden you have access to the laundry room in the building which have industrial type machines, which go faster (but it's still at least 50-60 minutes for one washing). The downside is that the machines are bigger so you have to have a lot more to fill it with or it will be wasteful.

If you ever get your own blood on your clothes, a good way to help get it out of the fabric is to spit on it before you wash it. It sounds gross, but something in your own spit breaks down your own blood and helps it to wash out. However, if you go on an axe murdering rampage, your spit won't be able to get your victims' blood out of your clothes. So keep that in mind the next time you become homicidal.

If it's not raining, I highly recommend hanging your clothes on a rack or clothesline outside. It'll save you money on not having to use the dryer, and it's better for the environment. And also your clothes won't wrinkle. Or even hang them inside if it's winter and you've got space in your house. They'll only take half a day to dry at most. And if it's summer, it'll only take a couple hours for clothes to dry outside.
@cj-seejay-cj-seejay10 жыл бұрын
i was gong to mention clotheslines too. if you look at how much energy different household appliances use, dryers are REALLY big energy hogs. i live in a place with a long winter, so a clothesline isn't really feasible for half the year, but i love it when i can do it.
@emmeline-tyler10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, seriously, use a clothes horse and hang clothes inside. Or hang them on coat hangers on the curtain rail
@MarkShaneHansen7 жыл бұрын
On the opposite side we have: some clothes can stretch when hung to dry. If you dry them inside, it will lead to high humidity that can be bad for the house structure and general indoor climate. And hanging clothes outside can lead to a bleaching effect from the sun. I'm serious, this is not a "general lightening of the colors over years". One hot day with the sun shining and now I own a black t-shirt that's a faded grey from the middle of my torso down. Only on frontside of course, since that one was facing the sun. That's just one reason why you may want to wash clothes inside-out, since it also wears less on the visible surfaces of your clothes. Or just go full hippie and never wash your clothes. Washing clothes really suck. Drying clothes really suck. And ironing clothes really suck. Actually, I don't want you to go full hippie. Just go full nudist, problem solved.

A pro tip I discovered during my undergrad days: if you use fabric softener sheets in the dryer, a quick way to clean the lint from the previous load of laundry is to collect the lint with a used dryer sheet. I wear a lot of wool, so I have some tips for wool: You don't have to wash it very often, just air it out if it smells. When you do need to wash it, use the lowest temperature and low centrifuge (if your washer has a wool program, use that), and you'll want to try to use a detergent that is specially made for wool. Also, don't put any other fabrics in there with the wool! If you do, your wool will shrink and come out all thick and weird. Also some tips for your nice clothes that maybe have nice embroideries or beads or other things that you want to be careful about: put it in a washing bag, or an old pillow that you stitch together to make a bag. This will protect your beloved dress/shirt/whatever. Also maybe set the centrifuge to a low setting in this case too.

***** They actually have lingerie bags that you can wash your bras and panties in. They don't cost much, I got mine for $5 at Walmart. Also, it is a good idea to make sure your bras are hooked before washing them. Otherwise they pose a risk of grabbing/tangling/tearing other bras.

also really important part: consult the label on your detergent on how much you need, because were I come from you put the detergent in a separate compartment of the washing machine and some people live with the weird assumption that you have to completely fill it up, which can damage the machine a it might also not be able to completely wash your detergent out and the person after you will have traces of your detergent on their cloth too which might be dangerous, because of allergies etc.

I find when washing all of my clothes together, making sure to put them in the dryer immediately after they're done washing works to prevent colors from transferring most of the time. And usually after the item has been washed already, isn't just brand new, there's less of a risk, as a lot of the extra dye gets washed out that first time. The only thing I don't wash with in my regular loads is dark jeans. I've made that mistake before and it left all my light colored clothes slightly blue tinted.
@amiablehacker10 жыл бұрын
One tip I have is get a mesh bag! I put my hand washables in it so I don't have to actually hand wash them! Nylons, delicates, etc. My washer also has a hand wash setting for things that don't fit in the mesh bag so that helps. :P

This is one of the adult skills I have actually mastered thus far. I find that there is zero point in separating into whites and colours... makes NO difference what so ever. I do usually wash completely new clothes of a very vibrant colour separately once, but after that they are usually good to go with the rest of the laundry. Bleach and softener, don't bother... and dryers just wear out your clothes more... but do check your pockets before doing your laundry!!! >__< And I can totally relate to ones mum doing all their laundry.... to this day I still do all the laundry and we've been together for 5 years...

I use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. It prevents bleeding of colors, gets rid of that musty smell in anything [like towels], softens the clothes, and doesn't leave the clothes smelling like vinegar at all. Fabric softener and sheets aren't good for you or the environment. Plus, vinegar is waaaay cheaper!
@johnatanskyzer61523 жыл бұрын
1:00 The reason people say that is outdated is because, what you should really separate is towels and kitchen towels from the rest (these used to be almost exclusively white). This laundry is usually a LOT more dirtier in many ways. It has a lot more bacteria in it and fungi can build up if they are constantly wet. Detergent and cold water will not properly clean it and it will instead spread across your whole load. However, colorwise if you mix them all the time in cold water, the white clothes might get very light grey shade, but hardly noticeable, if you do however attempt to or accidentally wash everything in hot water, then the paint from your colored clothes WILL leak, but not only to the white ones, but inbetween one another.

Undergarments, especially bras, can be very tricky because you technically are *not* supposed to machine wash most bras - it ruins the lovely elastic which makes them so supportive. Good, supportive bras can get very pricey, so you don't want to have them stretch out early. When I don't have time to hand wash my own, I do the following to make them last as long as possible: 1. Never wash bras with warm or hot water if at all possible. Heat does terrible things to elastic. 2. Use a mesh bag to prevent them from getting too bumped around, and to prevent the hooks of any bra from damaging other bras/other clothing. 3. Wash them with some other clothing, again to prevent hem from getting banged around. 4. Never use a machine drier if at all possible, air dry them by lying them flat/remolding any padded cups on a surface (or drape them from the center section instead of hanging by the straps to avoid stretching those out). While I've never used gel-padded bra, I know that the gel bits should always be removed before washing. These tips apply to both wireless and underwire'd bras.

*Those with Sensitive Skin* [or on a budget]: An alternate use of fabric softener is vinegar [use White vinegar. I am unsure of the result of apple cider vinegar]. No need to worry about smell. It disappears after drying (if there's even one at all). To use: just place vinegar in the same place as the fabric softener. Some will say use 1/2 cup (probably to make it last). I usually just fill it up whatever dispenser I am using. This works for clothing, towels, & bed sheets. I follow the instructions of my mother and grandmother, who have used vinegar for many years.

With modern detergents, you really don't need to use hot water. If you use cold water, you don't have to separate your whites. I use cold for everything except for particularly gross dishcloths--it uses less energy as well. Also, one I learned recently: don't put your bras in the dryer, hang them and they will last longer. And, since moving in with my boyfriend I've learned that not everybody knows the difference between a shirt and a sweater. Shirts can go in the dryer but sweaters can't. READ THE LABEL!!

If you need to iron anything pull it out before it's completely dry. That way you can get to ironing without having to worry about spraying with water first. My grandmother used to toss the slightly damp clothes into a ziploc and iron them the next day. Read labels before you buy your clothes. If you like two shirts and need to pick one, buy the one that's easier to wash! Finally, if you bleach your socks and other whites but they're slowly turning a yellowish color you need bluing! I put bluing in a downy fabric softener ball with some vinegar so it dispenses in the rinse cycle. The vinegar helps clear up any soap residue if you added too much detergent and the bluing will get rid of some of that yellow color bleach won't touch.

Besides being a fire hazard, cleaning the lint out also allows the dryer to dry your clothing more efficiently :) I don't wash anything besides underwear (excluding bras), socks, towels, and sheets in warm water. I wouldn't wash your whites in hot water - it's more a question of fiber content than color, though washing in cold water does help keep colors from bleeding. But like you said, the biggest thing is to read the tag before washing. Also, know that it is the hot water and agitation from the washer that shrinks wools, not the dryer. You can generally dry anything until the last 15 minutes without too much fear of shrinkage (for cottons and such). As I'm a tall female, I pull all my clothes out with 15 min left and hang dry them, then they don't shrink and I never have to iron anything!

I don't separate colours. My laundry is usually separated into towels, denim, cotton, and then all those light girly materials. Everything gets washed in cold. Towels and denim on heavy duty because my washer is old and that spins the water out of the heavy material better. Light materials get washed on delicate. Anything that says hand wash goes in on delicate because who has time to hand wash clothes? Most things go in the dryer. Sweaters, nicer materials, anything that has more than one material (you don't want a skirt to shrink and the lining to not shrink, etc.) and a handful of tshirts I know don't have room to shrink get put on a drying rack.

I swear by dividing your laundry into whites, darks, LIGHTS (yes, lights. this means weird colors that you're not sure which direction they go; for example, pastels or beiges that can't be bleached but you also don't want your dark-wash jeans to bleed onto) and sheets/towels. I swear by it. I've had roommates get upset at me for doing this because it means more time using the washer, but I don't care because I've never had a laundry emergency by doing it this way. Also, protip: if you have to be somewhere in 20 minutes and the shirt/pants you want to wear is wrinkled, throw it in the dryer for 15 minutes with the wet towel from your shower. Works miracles.

Haha, thank you! This makes me feel better. There's a very stressful poster hanging in my building's laundry room that recommends separating your whites from your darks and brights, your wool from your other fabrics, your jeans and towels from everything else, and something else that I can't remember at the moment. Basically they want me to do a separate load for every outfit I own. I just toss it all in together in the cold water cycle and so far I haven't had any problems, but I always feel like I'm doing adulthood wrong. Now I have authoritative permission to do it my way. Mwahahaha! Oh, the power! Today the laundry room, tomorrow the world!

Joyce De Portabitque I usually wash new clothes separately. ESPECIALLY JEANS. I don't normally separate my laundry into whites vs colors and usually just use the normal warm/cold setting but in my experience anything with indigo dye (jeans, purple rugs, etc.) really need to be washed all on their lonesome at least the first time or two.

Here is how i sort: Blacks/Darks one group, colourful 1 group (usually greys and pyjamas), red definitely one group (i also add salt with detergent), whites one group ( i wash this group with hot water), and we at home failed to determine the guilty blue item that coloured everything blue so I ended up making blue a group as well with jeans. I handwash some of my clothes and towels, pullovers&cardigans definitely no in the dryer, also clothes with sequins are no no in dryer too. I use fabric softener but i use the one for sensitive skin.

Can you do an addendum video on hand washing? Like, I know how to do it but past Charlotte would be very appreciative.
@lauragek10 жыл бұрын
Some additions I could think of - (May be a specific Dutch/European thing?) Using a plastic ball to put your detergent in makes sure the detergent doesn't stain the clothes and makes it spread evenly throughout the water. When using a laundry machine together with several housemates it's also nicer than using the detergent tray (which your machine didn't seem to have? It looked completely different anyway...) - Drying your clothes without a tumble dryer: hang them up asap because smells WILL take over and eventually your clothes get mold on them. If you're lazy, clothes hangers are your friend. - If you don't have big stains you can do with less detergent than the package tells you to use. Better for the environment and it saves money Things I still wonder about: what to do if the machine is broken? D:

Yer explanation is a bit ... simple? ... for the range of laundry a family deals with. Ours gets separated to: (1) whites and jeans, since both can take bleaching, (2) light colours, (3) dark colours, (4) delicates and blacks. Whites and jeans get a hot/cold wash/rinse cycle (with bleach), light and dark colours each get a warm/cold cycle, and delicates get a cold/cold cycle, as do the blacks 'cos they fade less quickly that way. None of this addresses the question of STARCH, which IMO is essential for 100% cotton shirts, especially dress shirts. If you need STARCH, give up and take your shirts to be professionally laundered. You'll never get the ironing right on your own.

Why do you bleach your jeans? Doesn't that ruin them?
@jmcosmos10 жыл бұрын
mickycarcar Nope. You don't pour the bleach _on_ the jeans, just into the wash water. Diluted, it's fine and does its job of knocking out stubborn stains. And after six or seven years, you get these wonderfully soft jeans that are the palest sky-blue ever.

Mesh bags are the best for anything strappy--tanks, camis, bras, etc. They get clean and the straps don't get tangled in your other clothes or sucked into the crevices of the washer and dryer. As for fabric softener, you can get dryer sheets (and detergent, incidentally) that have no scents or dyes in them, which is great for sensitive skin.

I wash most of my clothes in cold water, but sort my laundry by which setting I'm going to use- Sweats, towels, and jeans on high, shirts and shirt-dresses on medium/ permanent press, and delicates and fancier/ more fragile dresses on gentle/delicate/hand wash--I actually do hand wash them if/when I have time. Also, if I'm putting these things in the washer I usually do them last, since I rarely put them in the dryer- drying racks are also your friend. :)

TIP: never put bras in the dryer, they'll get messed up! Bathingsuits too, the padding will fall out in the wash and it is easy to lose, so just skip the dryer! Colors do better with less heat (in wash and in dry) which'll make your clothing look better longer!!

A few handy tips! A. Iron along the hems. B. Flatten the fabric along your ironing-board and be sure to move it so this is always the case, because otherwise you're totally ironing down wrinkles, friend. C. Always use a water-spray! It'll help with the steam-effect that makes the ironed clothing fresh smooth; and also prevent burn-marks. D. Never. Ever. Ever. Leave the iron in.

One tip that I learned while washing my Black Jeans (Or any clothing dark or whatnot) is that if you have the powdered soap it is best to fill up the machine with water first, then add the soap and mix around with your hand (or arm). If you do not, then you run the (very possible) risk of having bits of the powdered soap cling onto your clothes. (Trust me, black skinny jeans with hard bits of soap clinging to them is not exactly the best look to pull off) Anyway, once you swish it around you can just throw your clothes in as normal. (after drying your arm)

not all machines you need to set by numbers some just have like a dial or a button for like cold wash where you take out the drawer put in powder and conditioner then put back in press the start button and it does it all for you there is usually other settings for stuff but ive never tried them so ya know buyer beware. but for me chuck everything in on the "daily load" setting does it and never had any issues and then in the dryer for like an hour and everything is toasty or on the drying rack if you really dont have the time to hang around and hope the dryer doesn't catch fire and destroy your clothes among other posessions.

for delicates such as bras, tights/stockings, lacy fabrics or pieces with a lot of beading use a delicates bag (from a lingerie store) or a pillowcase with the open end tied off, this stops things from getting tangled or pulled, especially if it is a top loader washing machine with an agitator in the center

I love doing laundry. I find it to be a relaxing activity. I wash the clothes, I dry the clothes, and Mommy folds the clothes. Since there are 7 children (me and my 6 little brothers) living in the house, Mommy has to fold everyone's clothes because I cannot tell whose clothes belong to whom. I can easily pick out my clothes since I'm the only girl. I do everybody's laundry. Currently, there is a whole load of clothes in the washing machines. Mommy needs to fold them all because me and the boys all need to go to her little sister's, our aunt Dop's house, tomorrow. I already got some of my pants, but I need my shirts and stuff.

I'd also recommend getting a laundry drying rack (is that what they're called) or a good, old-fashioned clothes line. My clothes last a lot longer when I air dry them, as opposed to putting them in the dryer, and a rack or a line helps you dry them without them being stretched out on hangers. I only do this for nicer clothes, though, because who has time/space to dry EVERYTHING by air?!

What is that washing machine‽ American washing machines are weird
@DearestClaudio10 жыл бұрын
It's coin operated, which means it's a public washing machine, so it's probably not the newest machine ever. There are two types of washing machines in general no matter where you are: top load and front load. This one is a top load machine, one of the older models with the big random stalk in the middle of the basin that doesn't really have any discernible function.
@DanThePropMan10 жыл бұрын
DearestClaudio Its function is to turn constantly and agitate the clothes and water with its corkscrew shape.
@DearestClaudio10 жыл бұрын
DanThePropMan My parents just bought a brand new top load washing machine and it does that just fine without it; it's just a big basin for clothes and water that spins and shakes clothes up on its own. Maybe technological advances in washing machine basin shaking have been more significant than anyone assumed.
@DanThePropMan10 жыл бұрын
DearestClaudio Maybe it's not an essential component to accomplish the task, but I'm pretty sure that's what it does.

This is as good a place as any to post this question: When I do laundry, after I take out the clothes, more often than not, I find some undissolved power stuck to jeans and t-shirts. I've tried using less powder (I live in Vancouver. Apparently, we have "soft water" and need less powder anyway), but that doesn't seem to help, even when it's less than 1/4 cup in a full load. I've tried less clothes... or, more to the point, it also happens when I have a smaller load to wash. I've tried the tip in the video, turning on the machine and allowing the powder to mix with some after before I add the clothes. If it helps, it does appear that the undissolved powder gets stuck on items that I put in last, ones that are at the top of the machine at the start of the cycle. Also, I realise just swapping to liquid might help, but I have a huge, mostly full box of powder I don't want to just throw out.
@jfisher165910 жыл бұрын
Pretty much everything you have said is what I would've suggested: less clothes, less powder, and powder first. However the only other thing I can think of would be to break up the dry detergent in your hand before adding it in, and use a good liquid fabric softener. Hopefully I was of some help...
