Lots of people paying close attention to this. Thank you, Jess, for sounding the alarm, then keeping us informed. Ashley of Gardening in Canada put out a video today about how to do our own soil bioassays. She gave you a huge shout out on her last video. Many of us reached out to her to see if she could assist in any way, and she came through. I think the whole gardening community everywhere needs to be aware, informed, and involved in the identification, communication, and remediation of contaminated soil. Thanks everyone!

I'M SO EXCITED YOU'RE DOING THIS W MUSHROOMS!!! 😆 I've been playing with mushrooms, & mycelium in my garden for a couple years now, and I've been consuming medicinal mushrooms for about 4 years. I joined my local Mycology Society bcuz mushrooms are such an interesting subject, I just can't get enough of them! People should know they can call their local Mycology Society and ask when they can get some "spent" mushroom blocks to use as mulch in their gardens. You don't have to be a member to take advantage of this soil ammendment. A lot of times the blocks are free. Sometimes ours cost $1. each block. Mushroom Blocks are the leftover block of substrate (Usually about the size of one gallon) which commercial mushroom growers grow their mushrooms in. Actually, it's what y'all did in this video - you made a mushroom block! Except you did it in a bucket, and they normally do it in a plastic bag. Then they grow 2 flushes of mushrooms. Just like y'all are going to do. And then they THROW AWAY those mushroom blocks!! Bcuz they're a business, and don't have any gardens to put those blocks in. BUT WE DO !! And just like you're going to do Jess, we can get these blocks, and add them into our gardens! These blocks are full of mycelium which is GREAT for your garden soil health, even if you don't have contaminated soil ! You just crumble the substrate, (the block) into your garden soil, give it a little mix, and that's it! The mycelium will start to grow and create healthy, symbiotic relationships with your plants, trees, everything! IT'S JUST SO FANTASTIC!!! So you don't have to grow your own mushrooms to be able to get some good healthy mycelium into your soil. Just find your local Mycology Society, most medium to large cities have them. And most college towns have them too. Give them a shout and pretty soon you'll have your own mycelium block to add to your soil without having to grow any mushrooms!

I have been internalizing far too much anxiety about bringing in "outside" materials for just this reason. Thank you so much for taking us along this journey and for shedding light on yet another topic that no one in the mainstream wants to volunteer. I can already see upsizing this to 55 gallon barrels for the inoculation, and buckets upon buckets to fruit a number of different species. It sure doesn't hurt that I love mushrooms and it makes me giddy thinking I could be fruiting my own rather than stumbling along trying to forage in the forests here in Oregon. Thank you once again, and may His blessings be more abundant than all you could ever reap from the ground.

I had a problem with glyphosate, which is a herbicide, I use King strafaria mushrooms, and oyster mushrooms in my backyard for the last 2 years to remediate, it works, you're doing the right thing, it will take a while about 6 months before you see a difference🤔 another thing that you can help to remediate the soil is em, essential microorganisms, they will also help mediate the problem, I know that you can get them going in your compost, it's lactose basilis, you can find it in yogurt, beer yeast, sauerkraut, and bread yeast, kimchi, you can buy EM in a bottle, and put it directly on your compost, and in your beds,❤️💃🙏🌏🦋🤗

Hi Jess, my husband is a farmer and I garden in a farming community so drift from herbicide is a yearly battle for us and something my husband has a lot of knowledge in. We both agree that this cupping looks distinct to a Monsanto herbicide called “Dicamba.” I just want to shoot you a message to suggest maybe you look at Dicamba drift damage as being the cause of this distinct cupping found in your plants. Glyphosate doesn’t cause leaves to cup in that way in our experience while Dicamba always does. I hope this is helpful to you. Wishing you the best!

Thank you so much for taking this route. And, for leveraging Will's knowledge and connections. It will be such a huge benefit to the gardening community if you can promote these methods. The agribusiness companies in the south have been the worst actors. The southern gardening and local family communities are the ones dealing with this issue. If you can rebuild the trust of local gardeners and instill new healing methods in community gardeners, that will be awesome. It is important that you have raised awareness of the problem, and a possible solution. Thank you! Thank you!

I looove finding people with a vast knowledge of something like this, and are willing and able to help others with what they've learned. That's what garding is about to me, it can be so communal. People sharing knowledge and plants, and it brings people together but also betters the earth. Also remember that you may need to set some containers of water around the outside of the Lowe's buckets (exactly what I used as well). The Oyster Mushrooms require a high humidity to fruit. 'North Spore' had a really good video about growing mushrooms in the garden to eat (not specifically to clean up soil, but it does that too). Ignore the nitrogen wood chip comment (does not apply if you layer it), but the mushroom info was really good. They just put the spawn directly out there in various ways for various types - in soil, spent fruiting logs, pasteurized straw, straw bales, wood chips below fruit trees, etc. They also talked about grain spawn vs sawdust spawn - if you have rats/mice, they recommend sawdust spawn or straw vs grain. I tossed some pink oyster in my garden as it is known to do better with the heat, but am still waiting for fruiting. Hope this helps, God bless❣

Thru my research I found Turkey Tail had the most benefits I was looking for for cancer detection and general wellbeing. My wife, myself and our roommate started taking 1 turkey tail pill a day and we haven't had any major health issues or sicknesses since. We recommend it to all our friends to try. It made a believer out of me and I will take mushroom supplements for the rest of my life. Biblio suggestion: "Mycellium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World."--Paul Stamets, 2005. Ten Speed Press. He's written others, but that one's probably the most accessible for newbies. I grow mushrooms at home with a humidity tent from Northspore. I live in Colorado where it can get extremely dry here. So I have had to use a tent inside to grow along with buying kits to get mushrooms. I love it! I usually dehydrate them and then vaccum seal in a mason jar to later use on pizzas, pastas, salads etc.

Can’t wait to follow along. Just FYI- I live in Boston area and come fall, one oh the best examples of chicken of the wood mushrooms is a road going south out of the city we refer to as the J way. 2 lane windy congested with after work and drive time cars. It is lined with old oaks planted right up to the roadway. South sides almost every tree is covered in the mushrooms. And one day , come fall, you come along and someone has harvested the lot!

I took part in a oyster mushroom experiment with very nasty crude oil drenched soil. It wasn’t an official study - we were mimicking studies we had read about - but the results were insane. I can not WAIT for Jess to really nerd out on this. Have a feeling this will be a whole new classroom. A delicious classroom. So excited. Your dirty dirt ‘bout to turn to gold.

Olga is amazing. You are so fortunate to have a resource like her close by. I am fingers crossed for the mushroom experiment. It’s an interesting solution if it works 😁👍💚
