Note about the "it's all a dream" thing. Very important distinction. This isn't actually like other stories where at the end you wake up and realize none of it was real and none of it mattered. In Elder Scrolls, *your character* is not the one having the dream. You are *also* a figment of the Godhead's dreaming psyche. If you react to that by thinking "oh so none of it matters" then you're right, and erase yourself from existence. If you react to that by thinking "so the only meaning is the meaning I make for myself" then you're right, and gain godlike powers.

Elder Scrolls lore is incredible...and frustrating...and confusing...and rewarding. It takes a while to figure out the terms, so don't feel too overwhelmed! I know I'm a month late, but I thought I'd give you a little support in learning more about this stuff! The time travel stuff is an interpretation of the texts we have access to in the games, and considering that the Elder Scrolls' writing leans heavily into "unreliable narrator" territory we can't truly believe everything we read as fact. Which is frustrating and confusing. But there's still some incredible stuff in here. Like snow whales and the whole amaranth thing.

TES lore has basically two tiers just like the Bungie rabbit hole: the normal one where you got your Daedra and their planes, the elvish gods, dynasties, empires of men and of elves, how the dwarves dissappeared, the akulakhan and so on. And then there's the actually eldritch one, with things like CHIM ("this is all a dream so I can lucid dream"), Zero-sum ("this is all a dream so I am not real"), what Numidium actually is (When you give the God's Heart new life and it keeps screaming [NO]) and so on

About the whole Empire space program thing: the cosmology on Elder Scrolls is very reminiscent of early medieval takes on the night sky so the Mundus which is the plane where the whole planet exists is encased inside a larger sphere separating it from Aetherius(the realm of the gods and other spirits) and the stars and the sun are just holes on that shell, the gods of Nirn(the planet) after creating the world became spheres around it, so imagine if Jupiter, Mars, Venus and the like where the manifestation or remains of the actual Grecoroman Deities in material form. Magic seeps from Aetherius via the Sun and stars like water or wind and permeates the inner space between the spheres and the planet so the Empire at one point decided to finance an expedition using Magical ships like the "Sunbirds of Alinor" to visit the outer spheres beyond the planet. The expedition was a success and brought pieces of the god spheres that were added into an Orrery but the project as a whole was short lived because the costs to mantain spaceflight required copious amounts of Magicka(the equivalent of Mana on this setting).

To explain how weird Elder Scrolls Lore is: A magical maguffin that appears in Skyrim for a fairly major quest may in fact be a remote-piloted space mining drone thrown back in time by weapons that work on breaking reality as an explosive. Said drone took with it copies of its, multiple, operators minds - giving it major personality issues along with milenia of knowledge of the future. Various people interacted with it over the milenia, some times leading to it being known as a great sage, wich, queen and eventually getting locked into the depths of a wargrave. & We cannonically know that Khajiit males have barbs. They don't put that book into the newer games, but its' there in Daggerfall. The second of these is fully cannon, the first just comes from one of the writer's notes.

The AI voice meme that Pancreas was referring to was the voice of the Awakened Lord of the Sixth House, Lord Dagoth Ur, he's a Chimer Lord (Chimer are the Dark Elves but before they had golden skin instead of the dark skin they have now) who became a god-like being with the Heart of Lorkhan which was mentioned in this video, he was also pretty close to achieving Chim, before the Nerevarin made him vanish in TES Morrowind. If you do intend to continue looking into TES in the future, I'd recommend watching a video detailing Dagoth Ur, he's a pretty cool character, plus his voice is amazing too. to think otherwise is a grand and intoxicating innocence!

quick fact, Aedra and daedra are elven names for the spirits, the Aedra (the divines, the gods mortals worship) are "our ancestors" in elven, spirits who helped in the creation of the mortal realm, giving up a lot of power doing so, the daedra, "not our ancestors" were spirits who did not aid in creation, they made their own realms in Oblivion, they kept all their powers though and since they like playing around with mortals this can be a bit of a problem

The more I actually go and look into Elder Scrolls lore, the more plausible my heavily modded mage campaigns feel: I've done characters from basic druids and clerics to mages manipulate the cosmos, daedric librarians, dream eating illusionists, a cryomancer/shaman with a wind spirit keeping her alive, and a literal technomancer/artificer. And even my comparatively simpler characters had so many fancy tricks due to the mods I found. Elder Scrolls is a wild setting and I love it so much. I miss modding Skyrim.

@dhalterman3 ай бұрын
Without going too into the weeds, the entire Elder Scrolls setting exists as a dream in the sleeping mind of a Godhead. This is almost never acknowledged in-universe, and even more rarely directly. CHIM is what can happen when a person in the dream realizes they are a dream. More often, the realization causes the person to doubt their own existence, and subsequently they are erased from ever having existed. If they manage to retain their sense of individuality, they achieve CHIM, which allows them to manipulate reality like how you can manipulate your dreams while lucid dreaming. It's also the explanation for mods iirc.

Elder Scrolls lore is great. It is super whacky at times, but that is why I love it, as it doesn't shy from breaking away from the classical fantasy lore. It also is quite in depth, which most people who just play the games probably don't realize. And if my name doesn't give it away, if I ever could get isekai'd into a setting I would chose the TES setting.

In my Fantasy worldbuilding, the Schizophrenic lake tribe worships a moon goddess named Moon Moon. The reason the lake people are schizophrenic is because Moon Moon, due to being young, doesn't have the vision she dishes out under control, and people are getting delusions instead. However, Moon Moon isn't a terrible person. To make up for that blunder, she sacrifices a buttload of her powers to give people crazy strong buffs.

Whether I like or hate elves depends on the elf. I'm much more a fan of Half-Elves who have both human and elven heritage. Closest thing to that in Elder Scrolls are Bretons who are a race of men with mer blood in them from their ancestors, the combination gives them short lifespans but immense magical talent.

hm... you know now that i have informations of Pelinal being somewhat of a time traveler, it could give some context to what the next Elder scrolls would have in its story. Since Skyrim had so many instances of the Empire and the Elfes basically saying that the Empire will lose the next war against the Elfes and that they only gather strength for the next battle, it makes me think that the next game will be in a time when the elfes fought again and won. Maybe as part of the mainquest or for the mainquest your side developes the spell to send someone back and it might be your quest to find the person who will be most suited for that special mission. maybe it will send the first one back too far and then they send you back as the second person, but to the time shortly after the elfes started the war that ended it all. But don't mind me. That was just some tired brainstorming.

A fantasy people that would take the place of Elves for me would be some kind of naturally beautiful angelblooded, dragonblooded, or just magically engineered human super nobility, but that's just because I believe in "born, not made" (I consider cyborgs and transhumans in general as "reborn" even if they were "made", they were "made" by someone else using high-tech rather than used mundane means of becoming what they are, nature > nurture).

Vivec has been proven to be unreliable narrator and concepts of Godhead (which is more Lovecraft than Elder Scrolls) and chim get mixed up with each other. Plus, he is a murderer and backstabber who essentially ignored the wishes of his god to seek divine power himself. To over simplify chim, it is essentially Apotheosis, or ascending to godhood to shed one's mortality to become a divine. For some reason, when mortals become daedrae (i.e., essentially evil gods), this is not considered chim. Here is the oddest yet most interesting part of Elder Scrolls lore. It is filled with a ridiculous number of potentially unreliable narrators like Vivec where all, most, some, little, or none of what they claim is true is actually true. This means unless you experience something in-game its validity is always questionable. In addition, Bethesda tends to retcon stuff from the first two games. "In My Time of Need" quest in Skyrim summaries this dilemma very well. Try to answer this question after completing it: Is Saadia actually guilty of doing something malicious in Hammerfell?
