I will admit I was not a Taylor fan at that time, I am now, but remembering all the fallout that led to this moment its honestly staggering people believed Kim and Kanye. Both have always been calculated opportunists, but they tried to spin it so people viewed Taylor that way because they were unhappy that she called out his song on the Grammy stage. And many people (tbh including me) believed that Taylor was lying to save face and that this video couldn't possibly have been manipulated. I feel bad for being so harsh towards her for so long and feeding into it all, but what also blows my mind is even after the full video dropped some people just kinda awkwardly shuffle around ignoring that they were wrong or that Taylor deserves an apology. Just admit you were wrong.

Why did i think Getaway Car was her leaving with Tom from Calvin. When she said "the ties were black, the lies were white, shades of gray in candlelight, i wanted to leave him, i needed a reason." i thought she was describing the met gala and saying that dancing with Tom at the gala was a reason to later leave Calvin. I'm also a recent 2021 swiftie so I'm always trying to understand a lot at once haha

That’s why she “left him in the motel bar” and “that was the last time he ever saw her” and “said goodbye in a getaway car.” None of those lines make sense for Joe cause she never left him. Edit to add: Now that I reread it, I think you and OP are saying the same thing. She did leave with Tom from Calvin, hence him being a getaway car. But “nothing good starts in a getaway car” and she realized Tom was a rebound but Joe was her person. So the song actually touches on her leaving Calvin and then also her leaving Tom later on. It’s about both.

Here’s my unsupported theory. Taylor planned to settle down and have a family with Calvin. She thought that was the age. So she enjoyed her year of hanging out, girl squad, no album plan etc. She explored being a writer for others with songs going to LBM, Sugarland, Calvin and figured she’d keep writing under a pseudonym to have her privacy. Then she got bored and realised she didn’t want the marriage, picket fence, lose your name world. Forgot to tell CH who thought he was being clever saying he wouldn’t work with TS (cos pseudonym)… and planned to propose (maybe even April 29)….. she ghosted…. It’s a fun narrative in my head 😂

As much as I love Tom I don't think they broke up just because he was not Joe. For how iconic their poparazzi photos were at the time, it was also when Taylor was trying to stay out of the public eye. He really wanted a more publicized relationship while she didn't. I REALLY think "I did something bad" 's second verse and prechorus is also about him. Like he wanted to do these extravagant things in the public eye and all she wanted to do was hide. He was smitten with his idea of her but never actually her. Over and over she's told us she likes secret relationships and keeping her private life private and he did everything but that when they were together.

100% I think just like how Getaway Car (and a bit in Long Story Short) explains it, she needed someone to "save" her from all the drama and toxicity that she sort of clung to the first person that was treating her well. I don't blame her though with all that was going on in her life and Tom being one of the most charismatic people in Hollywood. Of course running away from her past wasn't working anymore after like a month in and with all the media attention that was picking up on her again from that relationship it just wasn't a good fit. Though I wouldn't say Joe has NOTHING to do with their relationship ending. We've gotten plenty of context from numerous songs about how she has been infatuated with him since they've met and getting to know him over time - and the lifestyle he was living - just made her more drawn to him😂

Based on how Tom's subsequent relationship went, it really doesn't seem like he wanted a public relationship. He quietly married Zawe Ashton and had a baby and it was never a big public affair. He probably just wanted a more official and long term relationship with her and she just didn't. That's not a bad thing, it's just different expectations and it didn't work out. But it doesn't seem like he's ever particularly wanted a publicized relationship.

I remember arguing with my sibling (who was at the time a huge Kanye fan) in 2016, insisting there was probably more going on, stuff we didn't know, etc. I wasn't even much of a Swiftie, though I'd loved 1989. I was vaguely aware of the news when the full call surfaced, but only went to actually look it up recently after going to the Eras tour. I think the most upsetting thing is that she okayed the "might still have sex" line and (seemingly reluctantly) allowed the "made her famous" assertion, because that was Kanye's POV of the events, but she specifically said she had been WORRIED he was going to call her a bitch, and she was relieved he hadn't. BEFORE the final song had been recorded.

That call- it was legally recorded. It was ruled that there was no expectation of privacy while on speakerphone. and that just makes Kim and Ye even worse in terms of how conniving and venomous they are. Just the level of bullying from 30 something parents is insane to me.
