The fact that he's concerned about the effects of a simplified method that could lead to pain and suffering for those who find these methods unfulfilling is remarkable and rare to see in the field of learning, especially on the internet, where the myth of meritocracy and innate abilities are so prevalent

I do this idk - 1) First see a video of the particular chapter your trying to study or just understand the concept from your teacher. 2) Practice multiple questions on it. I don’t know if you guys get these types of books, but in india we get books which have 200-300 questions per cheaper and if you practice and solve them all then you will probably be really good. So just buy some external book with multiple questions and practice them and buy books which have like 3-4 particular questions that are similar to each other to practice easily. Idk
@AltOurCumrade Жыл бұрын
I am in highschool grade 10 so might not work for you And one more thing that for me in the first questions the questions might seem easy but the further you solve the harder the questions get and in some questions just to solve you might take hour to solve 3 questions. So don’t worry when it happens as it happens to all and once you start solving questions and understand how to then it will become easier.

5:13 this is most important thing I learned from this video. I usually memorize important topics by their definition but by doing this I am not making use of brain's natural inclination towards remembering, processing things in relation to each other. By thinking about how the important topics relate to each other, we get benefits like increased cognitive load by processing info and creating relationships, using relational memory system of brain and also, the definitions of the topics are naturally mastered while creating relationship between several topics...

My problem with the first studying “tip” is that it rarely works for subjects that are very content heavy/focused. I study microbiology and biochemistry as part of my degree. To do well you quite literally have to remember everything, as much information of what was provided as you can. Summaries don’t work well because the tests will focus on specific examples provided in lectures rather than general themes. When we end up going through hundreds of pages of work, trying to write it out becomes tedious and takes up more time than I can afford. When everything is a “need to know” there’s not much you can summarize.
@sovereignknight9290 Жыл бұрын
so what would you say is the best advice for approaching a subject like biochem with so much content to memorize?

I've been watching this channel for some time and Justin quite often says that brain does not enjoy working with linear information. I have a problem with this, because I often remember and recall memories and information very sequentially, so thinking about what comes before and/or next helps me recall the information I was looking for. I do understand it's probably personal preference and not everyone works like that, but I'd love to see a video on this topic of linearity.
@whoami6601 Жыл бұрын
I'm the same! It's not that I wouldn't believe him (not like that at all!), but you're mentioning a point I was thinking about, too. 🤔
@benkyobenkyo-q9g Жыл бұрын
what justin means is that if you try to learn information presented to you in a textbook, based on the classifications and headings they provided, in a linear manner, from start to end, then it will not make much sense to you, based on the prior knowledge you have. The sequence the author of the textbook learned the subject isnt the same way you do, therefore to follow his thought pattern, that is the information in the textbook linearly is stupid. Thats what justin means when he said that, however the technique you used to recall information is actually one of the techniques he teaches, and falls under higher order learning, because you are categorizing information in a sequential, cause-consequence manner...
@A_Wirla Жыл бұрын

@morninglift1253 Жыл бұрын
You have a problem with what Justin is saying because he is wrong. Our brain does work linearly. Justin is referring to the fact that a single memory is usually linked to several other memories at once. Nevertheless, most of our memories are learned linearly; there may be branches along that linear path. We actually learn using mental models. The 2 most common is chronological and geographical. We remember things by time in our brain as when we close your eyes and we remember events as they unfold chronologically. We place things by location in our brain as when we close our eyes and we can move around our home. The classifications and headings in a book do work because that's how our brain arranges information. It's the reason why the authors wrote the book in that fashion!

Before each new school term and school year, I would try to get hold of the new books and materials to be learnt, first step was to have a passive learning exposure to the subject by watching movies, documentaries, audio.. visit a museum ect.., then efficient and effective condensing of the info, role play. I did this with my autistic twins and it helped them have above 65% pass grade in most subjects and be able to be fully upto date and participate during class, maths was much harder for me to do . I'm right now preparing my "examen de grado" which is a sort of BAR exam for lawyers in Chile (not quite but close enough), and I wanted to ask for your advice. You see, the general strategy which most people use for preparing the exam is memorization of the material through repetition and weekly testing. The exam is an oral interrogation on random topics of private and process law and essentially requires the ability to recite definitions and legal dispositions verbatim and some elaboration and "higher order" abilities, to put it mildly. So what would you say is a good strategy and methods for preparing such an exam?

I know this isn’t the solutions for everyone, but I’ve seen a lot of comments asking a video about how to be better at maths. So, smt that worked for me (it might not work for you, but it’s worth giving a try) but stop saying to yourself that you’re bad at maths, because it is, in fact, a difficult subject, but it’s more than possible to understand. In fact, it’s made to be understandable. It’s a psychological trick, because since when you’re young your mates told you they hated maths, on social media you see so many people saying they’re bad at maths, that at some point your brain said “oh, so it’s smt hard and that everyone hates. Let’s hate it too!” And after that you kept saying to yourself that you’re not good at it, so the situation got worst. So please, please, stop telling yourself that your bad at maths, and try this instead (see if it works for you): see what’s the material you’re studying and see where you start not to understand. Then search for what that thing comes from, and take a look at that. If you still don’t understand, do it again, until you have a complete image of what you’re doing. Once you’ve understood where you’re coming from, seeing where you’re going gets way easier. Go back to the roots and relearn them. Hope this helps, love 🫶

Its connecting what you know to something you already know creating a relationship between them and a deeper understanding because you understand how this relates to the other eg. In learning the systems of the body lets say we learn the integumentary system we understand how it works then connect it to the nervous system and how the nervous system and integumentary system work together for bodily functions then add the muscular system which connects with both systems and the form they take them the skeletal system which adds structure and stability to the full body. So when you learn each thing separately and dont make connections you wont understand the bigger picture the huge concept. I In esence the human body is the bigger picture and its systems are what make it up. Thats how i view it hope that was able to help

Won't rewarding yourself everytime you study drain the joy of studying in itself? You would think of studying as a chore and you just want to get it over with so that you can reward yourself with treats or whatever.

What are your thoughts on channels like 3Blue1Brown that teach subjects (for 3Blue1Brown specifically that's mathematics) in a completely visual manner with animations?

I think they're really good if you can replay clips in your head afterwards, so you'd just be encoding a bunch of video clips (maybe for example of expandining simpsons rule's interval so you can see how dx looks and approximates over time), and then linking those video clips to build intuition from each process to another. From my experience, it becomes much easier to encode and also much easier to link (take for example zooming in on dx, you can use that technique of zooming in/out and using extreme values to see how something works, like idk taylor expansions). However, its kinda hard to put it's recall onto paper in my experience, the best you can do is a bunch of diagrams sketched so its maybe just good for it to be supplemental to another piece of infomation thats more rigourous so to speak, for mathematics. Almost like checkpoints of intuition for your rigour to be encoded more deeply.

Studies show that visuals are better than purely text, but it can range from person to person. Personally, im a high visual learner and absolutely need a picture to understand text. If not, i try to visualize in my head while i read the text. Math can be "dry" and visuals make it more fun. Think about how you can remember a company's logo, but you can't remember their motto as well as their logo.

@@cooledcannon idk, i have just shared my own experience. I was terrible in literature and poetry until i started drawing some doodles. Biology was also too much to handle until i used some mnemonics of my own and doodling. None of my friends need to draw doodles or even look at diagrams to understand the topic.

Great video, Im happy for finding you on YT. Can you explain "network" of knowledge in one of future videos, because I really dont know what is it and how to do it. Like how to connect information because for example in topics of physics and biology their information obviously not gonna connect with each other. Can you deeply explain that please in future.

PLATO - ARISTOTLE - hey Justin - How would you go about studying the "classics" that results in understanding and retention of the consepts - not just to write an essay but for the learning to be deep enough to inform thought throughout life. The language is different... The time is different... The concepts are timeless - so I want to get this right and not be overwhelmed. You rock ❤

One great method is to teach the material to someone. It's VERY effective. Go to your mom and ask her to just be a student for 30 minutes. If you can teach her all the concepts, you will get an A.

Hey Justin, how do you stay up to date with research/advancements in scientific based effective learning and/or behavioral science?
@morninglift1253 Жыл бұрын
All of these learning experts do keep up with research. A major problem is they emphasize them too much. For example, learning experts focus on higher-order learning not realizing that rote repetition is also important. Students are suffering because they aren't getting enough practice.
