3:46 Thank you for that! All we had was vinyl, not even VCRs yet, lol. We used to run the record player at 16rpm to slow it down an octave. You'd wait for MONTHS for them to come to town so you could see where Ed had his hands when he played a certain part, and the moment they would get to that part in the song, he'd turn and face his brother. DOH! Us local guitar players in rival bands would still help each other out trying to figure out this stuff. Since we had no videos at all, just the radio and records, THAT'S why when we all heard Eruption for the first time, we didn't know what to do, it was so mind-blowing. "How does he do that computer-like thing and the end with all the arpeggios????" Sounds goofy today but back then he was the biggest game-changer in rock guitar, hands down. Understand that radio was saturated with disco at the time so when this album hit, we went crazy. As far as impact, I put the first time hearing eruption right up there with the first time seeing Star Wars in the theater.

Before CDs came out we had 12 inch albums that ran at 33 1/3 RPM. Most record players also had a 16 rpm Speed which is extremely close to half, so if you tune carefully you could hear fast guitar playing at half speed, and one octave lower. You can still do that today with KZbin, put the speed on .5, half speed.

2:33 everyone plays this part wrong, even the tabs in Guitar World magazine in the 80s never got it right. Here's how Ed played that rolling lick: Open E string, hammer-on 8th fret on B string (ring finger), pull off to 5th on B, pull off to open B, hammer-on 8th fret on G string. Play the 5 notes on each "beat". I up-pick the open E, just works better for me. Ready for a neat surprise? Slide your hand up two frets, still play the open E and play the same lick two frets higher... that's the lick in the solo for Somebody Get Me a Doctor at 1 minute 32 seconds. Still not done: take the Eruption lick and play it exactly the same way up one octave, barring the E and B strings with your index finger. Play those same 5 notes and you have the roll in the solo for Beat It at 2 minutes 56 seconds. Same exact riff, one octave up. I've wanted to post a video for years but I'm all acoustic now. SO, run with that and do a video on those three songs and break the internet. 🤣

Ya kinda haveta put your head in Eddie space! No easy out! Just keep thinking about a kid that wanted to be the next Eric Clapton! He brought in tapping because he felt he was lacking as a guitarist back in '75. He was tapping for a couple years before the 1st album if I remember. I was a young guitarist & party animal in Orange County, CA back then. A buddy of my from the Continentals (Condo tract, Tony Alva also lived there) was from Pasadena & knew the Van Halen Family, that was my in. There's stories to be told from those early days, we'll see how it goes....
