Meet Amy, one of my students inside the Portuguese Pro program. She used to feel like a houseplant whenever she spent time with Portuguese friends or family… Instead of being able to join in with the banter, she was sitting silently on the sidelines. Like most of you, Amy found Portuguese super intimidating when she started to learn. But now, instead of feeling like a fly on the wall when she hangs out with her husband’s Portuguese parents, she can actually join the conversation and feels like she’s been able to “meet” them properly for the first time! Don't miss the opportunity to learn from Amy’s experience and get inspired by her awesome language-learning journey. We’re going to talk about how she overcame her overwhelm with Portuguese and impressed her in-laws by learning Portuguese from scratch… And how you could get there too!

The other side of the coin. I taught myself portugues and for four years no one in the family except one close cousin of my husband didn't know I understood what was being said. When at a family gathering I couldnt help laughing with the rest of the crowd at a really funny joke the family member said what is she laughing at stupid women. Then the close cousin said you guys for four years have not been nice to her but she speaks portugues very well 😮 needless to say never feel intimidated.

It's not that polite to speak a language that we know someone won't understand but older people in Portugal sometimes don't speak English. People born in the 50 or 60s (and of course before) were probably mainly taught French.

Boa tarde Liz.Como e o bebe? thank you for helping with portuguese.

I hope you don't mind but we would say "Como está o bebé?". The verb to be can be either "ser" ou "estar" and in that case it is clearly "estar". "Estar" is more about the current situation and "ser" is how things are.
