Actually "Das Mädchen" is one of the only things that make sense, as it follows one of the only rules used to apply genders. In German there is the DIminutiv, a form used to create the "cute version" of a word. One way to form it is bei changing the vocals to umlauts and adding a "chen". Therefore the very old German word "Die Maid", meaning a women, became "Das Mädchen" to imply a small women, also known as "girl".

If you ever had wondered why Germans say das Mädchen instead of die, it's because of the cutness form. There are two cutness forms ending in chen or lein and if that is the case the article is allways das. Like Fraulein, Brötchen, Eichhörnchen and so on. So what is the normal form of Mädchen, it's die Maid (maiden), but is an old-fashion word so no one use it anymore. And yes you could do it with der Junge (boy) too it would be das Jüngelchen, but same thing no one use it and even teachers often don't know it. But if we talk about things the article is always used by the principle of what sound best.

Sie haben einen entsprechend wechselnden Artikel, je nachdem, was gemeint ist. So ist es das Tempotaschentuch, aber die Tempopackung, oder die Zewarolle, aber das Zewablatt. Dementsprechend auch die Nutella-Creme, der Nutella-Aufstrich, das Nutella-Glas. Das einzige, was ich erklärt habe war, warum überhaupt die Debatte um "welcher Artikel gehört vor das Wort Nutella" entsteht und warum tatsächlich alles drei korrekt ist. Also würde ich bitten das nicht als Quatsch ab zu tun, wenn ich mich auf die Regeln unserer deutschen Sprache beziehe, es sei denn da wäre jetzt ein valides Argument hinter. Aber "Es heißt das Nutella, weil es das Nutella heißt." ist halt kein Argument.🤷🏻‍♀️

Well , if you refer to what nutella actually is, it is „ der Brotaufstrich“, you can refer to to the same by saying „die Nutellacreme“, both times the article refers to the last word of the compound: der Aufstrich and die Creme. Nutella as a word is a name, in this case a name of a „lifeless“ thing, so its proper to say „das“ Nutella, if you call it by its given name.

"Das Mädchen" commes from older german word that i am not sure how to write, i think it was "die Made". Also, when speaking about the 2 or more girls you can youse the word "die Mädels" Das Mädchen was used as a "sweeter" version of the word die Made, idk if it makes sense in English but such way of "shortening" or "sweeting up" words exists in some other languages. My German friend explained it best by telling me that gender is generally inconsequential to the word, aside from words that clearly denote men and women (aunt, mother, father, etc.). Its all about the endings. -chen = neuter Most words ending in -e = feminine -er = masc. Many more endings but those are some examples. Just dont ask questions and learn the endings (nachsilben) 👍

I don't get it. Der Nutella-Aufstrich Die Nutella-Haselnusscreme Das Nutellaglas Auch wenn es am dümmsten klingt würde ich im allgemeinen die sagen. Immerhin wird die Haselnuss-Creme beworben und nicht das Glas. Im Sprachgebrauch würde ich es individuell machen. Je nachdem ob ich das Nutellaglas gereicht bekommen möchte oder ob ich über die Nutella im allgemeinen spreche. Die Nutella schmeckt sehr lecker. Das Nutella ergibt in der Konstellation relativ wenig sinn. Daher würde ich es beim Anhang auf das Glas bezogen oder auf die Creme bezogen lassen.

Or the ones that have different articles, depending on with what age group you are talking to / depending from which era the text comes from :D (studied it, wrote several papers about that topic. Just to be a Klugscheißer: the "chen" at the end of Mädchen is there, since it's the deminutiv of another word. Mädchen is the younger/smaller Version of Magd, which is an old German term for women who worked at home, agriculture or hospitality. You can also say Jungchen which comes from Junge and is also often used like "komm Mal her, Jungchen". So it is der Junge, die Magd, and das Jungchen and das Mädchen Deminutivs are always preceded with das. Like die Karotte and das Karottchen.
