Interesting. Hang in there Sam. This reminds me of my Dad (rip), Who ran a manufacturing company. After he learned the basics he played and played and played some more -threw in a bunch of experimentation and eventually got his rubber molding machines to do things the “experts” could never figure out how he did. Thanks for sharing

Fascinating! I’ve only ever dealt with milling and cnc type of machines. Thanks for sharing about your injection mold machine. It’s really interesting and all new to me. Have an awesome day!

Great video. I am going to buy an injection molding machine sometime in 2023 (probably a BOY). I am fascinated by them. It'll be a fun project. It is good to see somebody else has jumped in and bought one to then figure it out.

Sam, you never stop learning. When the ejector plate binds, It could be a tight ko pin. Try rotating each pin. If one pin will not rotate you find the cause.

I work with injection molding machines that use polystyrene and polypropylene to make beads and boxes. Even with that old ass machine, i understood exactly what you were talking about and what all the switches and controls are for 😂

Looks like fun. Modern injection molding machine are similar in most regards... however I know one where it's actually running Android on the HMI!

Thank you for making this video!! You explained it in a really clear way. From the way you described it sounds like it's using flow control and pressure reducing valves. Not servo valves or proportional control valves. Is this correct?

AvE has his Haas CNC and Sam has his Van Dorn injection molding machine. Looking forward to seeing more of this.

wow this machine works with power ^^?holy s... what amachine :-D, it seems you a PP or POM and both without mold cooling hard to get a good process

Why do you need parts at such high volume? What do you plan on manufacturing?

i see there are two water fittings on both halves. with no chilled water over a long run you encounter flash and the cycle will get slower and slower.

I cut my teeth on machines like this… 27 years later, I’m still in this field, and I still love doing this.

Try filling the mold as fast as possible 95% to 98% with meeting the quality desired. Then the remaining 2% to 5% use holding pressure.

Hi Sam I'm a new subscriber [after watching you for a while]. I'm from Italy so please don't blame me for some writing mistakes. I did many retrofits of this kind of machines on the electric and electronic side [from electromechanical to electronic conversion + HMI + VFD integration]. First of all this machines are quite dangerous and especially this outdated electromechanical machine is pretty unsafe. Moreover you are running the machine with the electromechanical components in a bad shape. Looking at the switches on the material loading and plasticizing movement they are quite unreliable and that can determine a problem on the material loading and on the injection quantity/end position. The adjustment of the hydraulic pressure (for open/close, injection, plasticizing, part ejection) and speed related movements is mostly related to the material you're using as well as the temperature of the injection barrel and is not easy to master it. I know that you're a smart guy and you're very capable to collect various different experiences to solve a new one so you will success even on this new. My two cent advice is to be very careful about the safety side. ;-)

Hey Sam, do you mind letting me know who you hired to come out and fix the machine? I have 10+ older PIM machines that I constantly break down and to get a tech from each of the company to come out costs a fortune

I don't see any cooling lines (water) temp controllers hooked up to the mold? You must maintain a constant temp on the tool or it will just heat up from the injected plastic and you will lose Die Height (clamp tonnage) and it will not clamp up. You stated that the ejector plate is back and the ejector pins are still out... Make sure your ejector rods are bolted to the ejector butterfly plate. That's what pulls the ejectors back after ejection (unless the tool has spring loaded ejector return). I used to run and process the same old Van Dorn and Arburg machines at Stanley Black and Decker for 30years.. From 25 Ton to 1200 Ton machines. Still in the field but with all electric state of the art machines... clean, quiet, precise and fast....
