It’s so funny, here in the UK where that Land Rover is from (UK Plates) if we pass our driving license in a manual vehicle we get a full license and can drive an automatic too, if you pass in an automatic you get a restricted license and can only drive automatics until you pass a manual test 😂

do not pull off in second gear. use first. staying in a low gear at high revs will strain the engine. when in nutral let go of the gear stick, the stick is designed with a spring so it rests stop between third and fouth. remember this when shifting between second and third. uk

I second that. I too learned to drive stick shift, in Amsterdam (automatic was seen as for babies in my young Dutch days, lol; there were very few automatics on the road) but I have driven automatic when I lived in the US. Stick shift is also great for when you're doing snowy hills because you get to determine what gear you're in (and it can help stop your engine from stalling). Learn to listen to the sound the car makes for knowing when to shift, and if you have an rpm indicator, you may want to look at that too. Do not shift gears when you're making a turn because you'll have less control over the car then, should you need to respond quickly to something.

I'm going to say "Do what the guy who imports and sells classic Land Rover Defenders tells you, not what a bunch of random people on the internet who have never sat in a Land Rover Defender tell you" In a street car, you would always start in first. The gear ratios are designed for using first to start on a street. BUT, the Defender isn't a street car. It is meant to go offroad, and Land Rover may have chosen to gear it such that 2nd is fine for starting on the street, and 1st is only used for starting offroad and/or on hills. To be clear, I do not know the answer either way, but it is quite possible that 2nd is fine for starting out on the street. Do what the guy who knows Defenders says.

You'll break the clutch if you make it a habit to start in 2nd gear. I'd also suggest getting one with the steering wheel on the left side, there are plenty out there. It's just safer to have the steering wheel on that side if you drive on the right side of the road as you have a much better view of the traffic around you. Other then that I can only recommend them, they're awesome cars!

I think the best way to learn is to learn to drive a car with an automatic, then transition to manual when you have mastered the rules of the road, etc.. That is what I did and it went smoothly. You are comfortable driving a car and are then able to add the use of the gear shifter.

From my first time experience learning to drive a standard. The most difficult part is coming to a complete stop on the top of a hill and to get it in first gear and take off before rolling back down the hill. Once I got that part mastered I was on my way, no looking back. You will love driving standard, it kept me way more attentive to driving.

Other drivers would always roll back! Good times...

Absolutely true!! When I was learning to drive it was in a Volkswagen Beetle, and I was in Daytona Beach, driving up a beach ramp in heavy traffic. Steep hills up the beach ramps, and each time I had to inch up the hill to get off the beach, with another car waiting very closely behind me, I almost had a panic attack! Easing off the clutch and giving it a little gas, it always rolls backward a tiny bit, which made my heart skip a beat. But I never had an issue after that because I became a quick pro!!

I’ve driven Manuals my whole life. I don’t understand why she has you starting in second gear all the time? Is this so you don’t pop the clutch in 1st? It isn’t good to do this all the time because it is hard on your clutch. You have to slip the clutch while accelerating in order to pop it into gear without stalling out. This wears on the clutch over time and then it’s time to replace a clutch.

Being a fellow Defender owner (on my 4th) Just be careful when you get stuck. Dont go flooring it and 'bouncing' your way out of a hole when on rocks/hard surfaces (its ok on mud/snow as the wheels can still slip and not suddenly dig and lock), or you will break half shafts (axle drive shafts) - been there done that (more than once). Half shafts are the weak point, they are designed that way to fail first and protect your diff and driveline, and are not too difficult to change. Other thing is dont drive around in 4wd low on hard surfaces such as tarmac, you will wind up and blow a diff very quickly, always use 4wd high unless stuck or in tricky off road loose surface trails... When off roading and in low use 2nd gear and not 1st (1st is not designed for high torque and crawling the teeth are not strong enough, 2nd is or you will blow 1st gear over time by stripping the teeth off), Finally, make sure you have your swivel joints and engine and belts serviced/changed on or before the due service dates, you dont want any belts snapping on one of these as its a very expensive repair bill, and ALWAYS check your coolant, very low coolant can cook and kill your engine.. Great vehicle though, had mine sliding down 60 degree scree slopes and up 45 banks, wading over the bonnet lapping on the window in rivers with water filling up the vehicle (dont try that without a snorkel kit!) and on its side against a bank in the mud several times dragging itself along, great fun and the most robust big 'fix it yourself' vehicle you can trust. Just keep the basics well maintained.

Arian Jennings we don’t know the intention of people’s hearts or their motives for doing things - I used to be naive and think the best of everyone - but it’s not wise to think the best of everyone if you are ever putting yourself in a vulnerable position - if being offered something free, always good to take someone with you - ideally male - and then if there is any bad intentions, they get squashed pretty quickly. Also heard recently of a man answering an online message and he got mugged when arriving to meet the person (it wasn’t anything that appeared shifty) so please be careful whenever someone seems overly generous.

Not the place to learn! My dad took us out while he was feeding the cows pellets , we would kneel on the seat behind the wheel. He would put the 53 Ford pickup in granny gear set the throttle let the clutch out and tell us to steer in a large circle. Then when we got old enough and tall enough to get our license which was at the age of 12 for the farm he took us out on the frozen lake showed us how to correct a skid. Put us behind the wheel, told us to get up to speed and grabbed the steering wheel put us into a skid and we had to correct it before we hit the bank. Takes care of all the anxiety that you might have on the highway, or in stop-and-go traffic.

The quickest way to get used to the bite on the clutch is to park facing up a hill, put it into first and slowly release your clutch without touching the gas. The bite point is where the car will remain stationary without the break, then as you lift it slightly the car will start to move forward. Lift it too far and the engine will stall. Make sure to dip your clutch all the way down when changing gears to prevent unnecessary wear to the clutch.

You move to second once the engine power feels ready to move up (you will start to know when your Landie needs to go up or down a gear). You'll burn out the clutch starting in second. Great work 🥰💃❤️

It absolutely does like to disappear into and out of this dimension. occasionally a landrover will live all of its life with third in another dimension with the owner having to only use 2nd and 4th. One thing I would highly recommend is working on your clutch control and using engine braking rather than the brakes. You should be able to pull away without using gas and just using the clutch

What really helped me when learning to drive (manual, as I'm from Europe) is understanding what the clutch actually does. IF you're not using the clutch your engine and wheels are connected. If you want to switch the engine mode (i.e. gears) or slow down the wheels you have to disconnect the two - which is what pushing the clutch does. You were doing a great job for your first try though! P.S. If anyone out there knows more about cars and their mechanical workings, please correct me!

It's been amazing to read how many men on here seem to be afraid of vintage Land Rovers and a little preventative maintenance - or at least they seem to want to scare everyone else away. One of the things I love and adore about Hannah and her videos is that she's not afraid to tackle the difficult tasks, including learning how to drive a manual transmission in a RHD Defender. I was impressed (and entertained), to say the least. I have no doubt she will be turning wrenches on one of these beauties in no time. I can't wait to see the future adventures.

I learned in my friend's '94 Chevy 1500 with 4.3 V6. Had nearly 150k on it and bad throwout bearings. He got me used to using the clutch by letting it catch with the e-brake on then popping the brake when ready to take off. We were also on a boat ramp. When we were loading up he'd hold me in place some with the boat motor just in case I rolled back too much. He told me "If you're gonna fish with me you're gonna learn to handle a trailer too". Fast forward nearly 20 years and I can drive a standard if I have to and since I back my own boat trailer now can back a trailer like second nature. Good thing I prefer an automatic because you can't find much in a standard anymore.

I learned to drive a manual in an old Toyota Corolla. Since then, I've driven all sorts of stick shift vehicles, but the weirdest so far was a 1947 Dodge pickup. When downshifting, you had to push the clutch pedal in twice to get it into the lower gear... every time. Legs really got a workout in that truck, but it was fun.

As a 20 something European without a license, it always made me feel bad to see 16 year old Americans driving so effortlessly. So it's kind of a relief to see that actually everyone struggles! It's just so hard to learn spacial awareness and keeping an eye on everything and turns and signals and gears all at the same time! At this point I'm debating getting a manual car licence (which are rare and I only just learned that they exist) first and learning gears (which is a whole process you have to get specific training for, you can't just learn on your own) in a few years when I have the rest of it down!

The hardest thing about manual is getting moving..that is the part that needs to be mastered. Well that and stopping without killing it. The rest is easy cause even if you have issues getting it in gear who cares you have time to get it into gear. Listening to the engine will let you know when to shift. If it is revving that means shift up if it is sluggish that means shift lower gears.

Here in germany driving licenses are usually done with manual gears. You can do automatic, but then you are limited to cars with automatic. I got my license in 1984, and until 1996 i only had cars with manual gear. Then i did need a car with more towing capacity. The choosen car had automatic as default, manual would have been an expensive extra. So i ordered it with automatic, never ever having used automatic. Some time later i got the chance to test drive this model with the automatic gear. Well it went quite well, the engine had 3 litres and 210 hp, with a solid gap the strongest car i ever had- this is germany, usually in the usa cars do have way bigger volumes/hp, for germany this was in the upper 10% of all cars - and it drove quite nice. I went onto the Autobahn, to let the 210 horses run for a bit. I had to return the car soon, so i left the Autobahn. Now after 12 years manual gear you do have quite some muscle memory. With a manual gear you use the engine to brake when possible, saving the braking pads. Muscle memory kicked in, push the clutch down in one go, shift into next lower gear. Well, there was no clutch, its automatic. It was the brake pedal. Luckily no one was behind me. That one hard push down on the brake reduced my speed from 150 kmh to 80 kmh (93 mph down to 50 mph). Fantastic brakes😑. Well a car going up to 150 mph needs some good brakes, in germany the highways mostly have just two lanes, you need them. And good situational awareness, also be quick to react. The end of the story is from then on i always pressed my left foot onto the footrest on the left side to prevent me from trying to use the clutch. Its 25 years ago, and sometime i feel the urge to use the clutch. That braking however never happened again. I´ll never forget that. Also i´ll never have a manual gear car again. Automatic is just too convenient.

Hannah, get someone who "knows" to give you full LR tuition. Always use first gear when moving off but also learn low range and diff locks. These defenders will go just about anywhere and they are awesome BUT you need to have the skills to use them. Clutches can burn out if you don't have sympathy with the drive train. Lastly, learn how the hand brake (emergency brake) works and never use it unless stationery! In comparison to US vehicles, it will be economical with the diesel engine but here in the UK, it is seen as a fuel guzzler! Enjoy. Defenders are very capable off-road vehicles. Have fun with it and in a very short time you will love it and it will become your friend. They have a cult following here in the UK.

Hannahlee, good job learning how to drive with a stick shift. My belief is that "stick" driving is supremely overrated. I drove a 'stick car" for over 12 yrs all through Canada and America, I'm totally dedicated to NEVER driving "stick" again. I learned how to right seat drive in the Bahamas, it was fun and different, no biggie. I think your mother's choice in Land Rovers was the better one. Automatic is the better way to go and can free you up for other things you might encounter when driving. If you have kids or pets in a vehicle that large, you need to have a priority list (and a free moment or itinerary ) and the ability to scratch something off the list in an emergency; clutches and gear shifts are very unforgiving in this regard. And don't even get me started on driving slowly with a "stick"; waiting in lines or trying to gobble down an IN and OUT burger while driving stick is such a task...until you're at speed. Well, as you can probably tell, I'm in favor of you getting an automatic transmission version of the Land Rover Defender. Only one thing to think about while driving.......DRIVING!!!! You'll thank me later. Good luck with it, whichever way you decide.

I learned to drive a stick in 1975 in a 1933 Willys army jeep. If you don't know about these, Google it or ask your grandpa. LOL It was crazy! But it had only 3 forward gears. We used the Jeep as a family for 4-wheeling, or boony-hopping as we called it then. I loved that jeep. My dad and brother went out one time and broke the axle. That was the end of that. I later went out with my dad driving a semi truck on long haul drives. We took turns driving. It had 13 forward gears. Would love to do that again. ☮
