Onew is such an often misunderstood person at first glance, I feel. He comes across as a bit odd, and goofy, which he is, but, he's also so smart, and thoughtful, and caring, humble, down-to-earth, strong and extremely dedicated to his group. When he was voted best leader (which was voted for by other idols btw!), it was because he is the quiet backbone of SHINee. The glue that holds them together. You wouldn't know he was the leader at first, but once you get to know SHINee as a whole, you get it. Even now, the members still look to him for guidance. At just 18 years old, he became basically in charge of a group of 4 other teenagers, but ever since, has taken that role very seriously. He adores his members, and tells them so quite often (SHINee are always exchanging 'I love you's) and as it said in the video, puts them before himself all the time. Onew isn't even my bias, (though, after 13 years, all the members are my bias tbh) but I feel such an urge to talk about how great a person he is, because, he really is.

He also still holds the record for longest note held in a concert, holding the note for 40 seconds straight without his voice wavering or cracking at all! Plus all his other fun little talents like being able to smash a walnut with one finger, being able to spin most objects (even small end tables) on his finger, being able to open bottles with random objects like air freshener cans, singing opera, tap dancing, etc. He also graduated 2nd in his class, and has a doctorate (though I don't remember the degree, something in music I think). He really is an incredibly talented, yet insanely humble person

The clip you saw with Onew on the ground with his legs in the air, laughing and the instructor walking away, was when Taemin wanted to start learning how to B-boy. Onew went with him (you will learn that this group is tighter than any other in existence). However, his body just doesn't bend that way and it was hilarious. He tried again on "Weekly Idol" and everyone just lost it. Onew is Taemlin's 2nd., father. He dotes on Taemin and indulges him (as do the other members). In fact, Onew used to carry Taemin to bed at night when they first debuted (Taemin was 14 at the time). When one host asked Taemin why Onew did this, Taemin said he didn't know why, he just did it. Onew said it was because Taemin was just so cute. SHINee are so chaotic, savage, and honest on variety shows from the get-go that it became a trend for SHINee to be the first guests on new shows. If the show survived SHINee, it was considered a success and had a bright future.

To answer the question of whether Jinki is a leader who calms the temperament of other members, I would say that he is more like watching the situation unfold. Reading my answer I don't think it makes a lot of sense, but watching Onew enjoying the spoilers Taemin was throwing left and right and him wanting to give spoilers as well made my heart swell with joy. He's a true leader in a sense that matters the most - he's there for the other SHINee members of they need him.

oh the musical they put parts from was a musical he did with xiumin, he and xiumin are good friends too. Onew is very chill and quiet, they all listen to him and love to dote on him. when he feels anxious from the camera he tends to get (awkward-clumsy sometimes) or shy a lot, but when he is super comfortable he likes to make many puns and dad jokes lol. his debut mini-album is ballads because he said he wanted to make the album theme focus on his voice so that fans can find comfort while he is in the military, his solo debut album dropped just days before he enlisted

I'm so excited to your journey!! This guide doesn’t talk much about some events in Onew’s life, so I’d like you to know a few things. In 2014, Onew underwent vocal surgery to remove a vocal polyp and reconstruct the fold mucosa. He took a long time to recover, and there was a chance that he would never be able to sing again, so he trained a lot and still had to learn new vocal techniques to be able to sing again. He sacrificed his own voice for months, inhibiting himself from speaking so that he could recover well and start singing again. The first time that he came back to sing was with the song "Rainy Blue" from a japanese singer called Hideaki Tokunaga that wrote this song after passed for the same surgery that Onew. It was so touching that Onew cried in the end of the song and it was so beautiful to see him sing again, so I really recommend that you watch the peformance that he did in Tokyo Dome for that. Onew had proved that he is an extremely talented singer, whether doing great covers like the Opera "Nessum Dorma" or even singing his own song called "Blue", which I would like very much if you watch it. It is a ballad with classic elements and an extremely powerful chest vocal. The MV for this song is full of touching meanings and he made it as a farewell gift for us, because he was going to do his military enlistment. The album that he left is incredible. It is pretty hard to new fans understand his character or his leadership. But Onew it's one of the strongest members of SHINee. He has passed trough a lot to proved himself to the fans that was with him since the very beginning, and we see it. Please, give a lot of support to our leader Onew! (Also, I blame my bad English for any mistake that I made here. I am still learning, since I'm from Brazil lol)

For me Onew is more of an awkward bean rather than super shy. He gets embarrassed at his own awkwardness HAHAHA and his ears turn red and he starts sweating. He does like his privacy though, and is the only member in SHINee that has never been shirtless. He can go on with the dad jokes forever. It's funny because sometimes only the members understand his jokes, and everyone else is confused. Sometimes only one of them understands and the others are thinking. If you can, it'd be amazing if you react to SHINee performing at IU's Palette! They performed "Dear Name" (a song by IU) and Kind (one of the songs on their new album). They are both ballads and I think you might enjoy it!

It will help you to get to know SHINee better and to learn who IU is. This interview will help you to understand just how respected SHINee are by their peers and what it was like in the early days for SHINee, etc. IU is a solo artist who debuted 4 months after SHINee, who is known as "the nation's little sister." She is known for her amazing vocal range and for her cute bubbly personality. She is also one of Korea's top actresses -- she has even acted in a drama with Minho. Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun and he specifically wrote it with her in mind as the singer. SHINee and IU go way back. When you see the full interview, you will see that IU is a Shawol.

Onew is really good at balancing all the 4 members, who have very different, strong personalities. He knows how to naturally “handle” them when they are in the mood, or upset or something. He’s in the middle pushing the members and putting the spotlight on them rather than himself, but you still see him shining though.

About the Album naming. Taemin was the first to debut with a solo album which was called ACE. Jonghyun was next and without telling anyone he plagiarized Taemin’s Album cover design and then named it BASE. Lol when he showed the members his album Taemin right away said hey this is plagiarism and Jonghyun admitted yes I did it. And since then it’s become tradition all the SHINee solo debut albums have the same cover design just different colors but the names rhyme. Onew named his Voice because with the Korean pronunciation it rhymes. Minho is the only member left who hasn’t released a solo album. SHINee debuted in May 25, 2008. When Onew debuted he was 18 years old international age (19 Korean age), so in that clip he was 18 years old. I'm pretty sure that radio interview was soon after their debut, because of their hairstyles. His birthday is in December, so I don't think he would have been 19 yet. SHINee were all teenagers when they debuted. Jonghyun is 4 months younger than Onew, so when they debuted he had just turned 18. Key was 16 when they debuted and Minho is 3 months younger than Key, so he was also 16. Taemin is born in July so he was 14 when they debuted. Onew rolling down the stairs during their "Like A Fire" performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul, is just something he did to be funny. I know he pretended to fall on purpose this time to be cute and funny, but in reality Onew is known for being clumsy and for tripping and falling down a lot, so he was just playing up his clumsy nature. :D Also if you know Onew, you know that one of his go to comedic moves is to roll on the floor, either log rolls or somersaults, etc. -- similar to what he does in their "Dream Girl" MV. LOL As the guide points out, Onew is actually known for sometimes being uncoordinated and accident prone -- fans refer to his clumsiness as "Onew condition." There really isn't much duality when it comes to Onew, what you see on stage is pretty much what you get off stage. He lives his life just being himself and not caring a whole lot about keeping up any type of celebrity image. That is why he was voted the best leader. That award was voted for by other Idols and people within the Kpop and entertainment industry, not fans, so it's a very meaningful award. He is so well loved because he is that relatable guy that everyone wants to be friends with and he makes everyone he meets fall in love with him, just by being himself. Its that calm stoic personality that is the backbone of everything that makes SHINee who they are. I don't think the other members, or even Shawols, would have been able to make it though everything we have been through in the past few years if it wasn't for his strength and constant unwavering support. He is the one that makes it feel like everything will be OK no matter what is happening, we just have to take our cues from him.

Omg yaaay! Onew is such an amazing leader for SHINee! He is so so sweet and he acts like the members are his children lol. Taemin is actually the baby of the group and Onew and Jonghyun babies Taemin too much. Onew was the first person to teach Taemin how to sing! All of SHINee played a big part in Taemin development and Taemin himself said that he gained all the strengths that he have now from his member. Onew is the one who first captivate my heart and drew me to Shinee. I absolutely adore him, our soft fluffy bunny with a liquid honey voice. His voice, smile and the raw intensity when he sings can lift my mood. I especially love, love it when he sing with eyes closed and he become one with the song. You can actually feel that he put his raw emotions into every line. I can go on and on and on.. but i MUST start my day with his song. Please do check out his cover of Rainy Blue and Nessum Dorma. Getting to know Shinee together with you, I also only knew Jonghyn and Taemin from their solo songs and Minho /mostly as an actor/. Its so funny...Onew was my least favourite member at first (I just couldn't understand him or his leadership style...). Key pulled me in...and was my bias for a while, then Minho became a strong contender but somewhere along the way, Onew crept into my heart...and he is now my Shinee bias...and all the other members are my bias wreckers in one form or another.

Members tease Onew, but they know limits. ANGRY LEADER JINKI IS SCARY, so they don’t cross that line. And they respect him very much. And they automatically turn to him for this and that. They are chaotic but when something needs “serious mode”, they’re pros, all perfectionists in fact. They know each other so well already and they know each other’s limits, which to joke on, which not to.

I would love to see you do some album reactions for SHINee! Obviously their MV songs are great but personally I believe their b-sides are truly hidden gems. Onew is a bit of a wild card, he's quirky but very reliable and wise. Oooh, Password, I haven't heard that in a while and it's one of my faves. I'm so happy for you, discovering Shinee is euphoric. Re: fashion, Onew was so plainly dressed, one time he was mistaken for being one of Shinee's crew members. The LAX airport staff thought he was the help! He didn't like that so he asked Key to give him some fashion help and Key had him dressing super fancy and even carrying a clutch purse once. keekeekee. Key's help didn't last long, it was all so unOnew.

I really love Onew, he’s been my bias since I first heard him in Love Like Oxygen (which is the first song I heard from SHINee so many years ago). He has such a soothing voice that always makes me smile. I would like you to react to his live performance of Rainy Blue. After his throat surgery (which was a scary one because there was no guarantee he’ll be able to sing again or maybe not with the same quality) he was unable no speak for 3 months in order to let his vocal cords heal, after that he had to re-train how to sing, and that was his first live solo performance after all of that saying that he wanted to prove both, his fans and himself, that he could still do it. The song was originally composed by a Japanese singer who had to go trough the same surgery and he compose it during the healing process (or at least that’s what I’ve heard). It’s a really beautiful performance that get directly to your heart. 💚

Onew's randomness is funny because it is so ridiculous. Onew's type of leadership is all about sacrifice, carrying the burden alone, being a good role model and being a pillar. He always let the members talk but when it is an important question, you'll see the four of them automatically look at him. Jonghyun starred in Immortal Song before. You'll think that after his turn, it would be Onew next. No, it was Taemin. At that time, Taemin's voice was improving. Some Shawols said before that Onew gave up his turn for Taemin. During their concert, before performing Everybody, Onew got injured. They were telling him not to perform but he insisted. He did not want to ruin the performance. He was jumping around like he wasn't injured. He will never ever tell them to bow their heads a lot of times. He will never tell them to organize the papers they used during the radio show. Instead, he will do everything and make them see what should be done. Until now, they are still called manner-dols. Taemin said that he just listens to their problems. No judgement. He never told them how to solve it either. When Jonghyun passed away, we can all see how he tried so hard to mask his pain. How he became the pillar for the other members. He had a few scandals all throughout the years. Some minor, some almost ruined him. Even if there are times when I disagree with his decisions and actions, my faith in him never faltered. I am just happy that he is being recognized and acknowledged by a lot of people. I DECLARE THAT THIS YEAR IS ONEW'S ERA.

Our dubu Onew leader really is wonderful. It’s amazing the way the members consistently talk about how gentle and dependable he is. I have to agree that while his leadership doesn't always show in obvious ways, he really is the quiet strength and support to the other members and to their group as a whole. Also, his humor is unmatched to me. I think he’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever seen and despite his humor being kind of strange - it’s really clever! To be honest, sometimes it’s hard to tell when he’s really being clumsy or just fooling around. I think his awkward timing is particularly hilarious. Jinki can come across as both humble and rebellious depending on the situation, as well. I think that’s a really interesting aspect of his personality. And of course, his voice is absolutely stunning. Everyone has already shared so much great information about him. But, I will add something. Onew and Taemin share a long time working relationship and friendship, in my view. Despite their age, I also view them as equals in some ways. It's hard to talk about Onew without talking about his bonds within the group, especially this one. Over time it's possible to see that he and Taemin are unusually close within the group considering their leader and youngest positions. They spent time together in their trainee days and from then on, they've given each other a lot of support. You can find the story they told on radio about their first meeting here on youtube. They first met on the rooftop of the building where they trained pre-debut and Onew was one of the first people to help Taemin with vocal practice/technique. It’s such a sweet and memorable story, especially the way they tell it. Since those early days, they regularly compliment and seem to guide each other. They also tend to look out for one another’s struggles and discomfort when they're in each others company. For example, Taemin was very supportive of Onew when he came back from the service. Onew seemed to be especially uncomfortable on camera after such a long time away, but Taemin played around with him and complimented him and tried to ease him during that period. There's a really fun photoshoot they did earlier in the year where you can see that. Taemin may be the youngest, but he allows Onew to depend on him as well. It’s a side of him that's not always obvious behind his playful, spoiled, baby-of-the-group-image, but I think a lot of Taemin's own maturity, intelligence, and kindness shines through within that bond (as well as independently, of course) - and vise versa. It's really amazing to see. In terms of Onew, he’s also usually the first to look out for and defend Taemin (even indulge him!) (Jonghyun did this too - and they all do it to some extent - but Jinki can be especially particular about looking out for Taemin). They really support each other in a quiet, but noticeable way. Onew also says that ‘you can’t find fault in Taemin.’ Taemin has also said that Onew knows how to listen to him well without telling him what to do; that he instead offers examples to him and lets him make his own choices. But, then again, like Taemin said - it’s useful that he just forgets it all later anyways! They’ve said they understand and know each other really well, though. They both also have a similar, strange sort of humor. Or they get each others strange humor. Sometimes they’re the first to laugh at one another's jokes when they elicit silence or confusion from everyone else. It’s honestly like they speak their own language. Though you know it's an ultimate Old Man or Bad Joke when even Taemin (or Minho) are done with him. They both also become more playful when they’re together. It’s like watching two children. Despite that, they read each other well and it's really touching to watch the friendship, understanding, and trust they share - as well as the fact they clearly respect one another in their work and as people. It's sort of like - if you're a Taemin fan, it's hard not to be an Onew fan as well because of their bond. Likewise, it's hard to be an Onew fan and not be a Taemin fan. They really support one another. (Though all of SHINee do this for each other at times! So, it's also hard not to be a SHINee fan all around! And like and appreciate all of them just as much as the other for their hard work, their talent, and their personalities.) Onew and Minho are also incredibly close. Minho said they can predict each other’s actions and words just with eye contact. They’ve also mentioned how much they enjoy/ed living together. They really seem to have an easy understanding, comfort, and rapport with one another. The comfort between them is really beautiful to witness. Minho is also one of the first people to laugh at Onew’s jokes - and like Taemin he seems to just admire and enjoy his presence in general. And again, Onew just has this way of being 'on' for the other members. When they're in public spaces - or shows, radio appearances, ect. his first priority appears to always be making sure he protects and looks out for them in those situations. It's not always obvious because I think he respects their independence and individuality and it's also much more relaxed in recent years, but you can see it if you watch them over time. He'll diplomatically stand up for each member if need be. He'll help others understand what they might mean to say, support their opinions, ect. He tries to ensure sure that people have a good and understanding impression of them. It's clear that he always wants to protect them - especially in the industry. This was especially so when they were all younger. In a way, it's always clear that Onew is on each of their sides. I think it's really sweet that he bonded so well with the two youngest in SHINee, as well. Minho and Taemin are constantly praising him. I also think the room and independence he offered/offers to everyone in the group is important. It never feels or felt like he was unnecessarily controlling anyone. They were all allowed to explore their unique and individual selves and present that to the world. I think it just examples, again, his kindness and thoughtfulness; the way he looks out for the SHINee members and how important he is to them. And the way they've done that for each other as a group. Really, they all share these interesting sorts of bonds with each other - difficulties and all - seen and not seen - all of those bonds between them and their bond as a whole are really precious to shawols. I think even the more difficult and human aspects of their relationships - as a group and individually - makes it all the more important and real to us. As well as the honesty and insight they've shared with us. All of the members really have their own unique relationships with each other and it’s kind of an adventure to discover all of the ways they've come to know each other over the years. I could ramble about all of them individually and together a million times over. I don’t know if it’s been recommended yet, but if it’s your style - I would recommend checking out their appearance on the show ‘Hello Baby’. You can most certainly get a sense for their individual personalities, the way they all interact, and I think you’ll learn a lot more about Onew and all of them there. Also, just watching other show appearances and interviews. They have a lot of appearances in shows and on radio where they open up about being in SHINee, growing together, ect. It’s really enjoyable to watch your reactions and your interest in SHINee grow, as well as you discovering all of their extensive work from the beginning up to now. I got interested in Shinee only a few weeks ago, so I am following your journey as a fellow baby shawol! From the clips I've seen I think Onew could be my bias, he seems really a sweet guy and also very funny in an awkward way. I love his voice too, in Don't call me his part was my favorite. Looking forward for the new videos! Ah, I wanted to tell you that Key is a fixed member of the cast of Amazing Saturday, a Korean programme related. It's really a fun show to watch, maybe if you want you could check it out. You will see more of his sassy personality. Jinki made me a Shinee fan about 3 seconds after hearing him. What a stunning voice. And his personality made him my bias later on. I love that he is making some solo streams now and he talks a lot in them. I love listening to him talk. He also has a small show he does when he has more time, where he is doing all sorts of activities, which is super fun to watch. I wish the episodes were longer. He leaves the impression of a very caring and respectful individual who doesn't care much for the limelight unless he is on stage. In spite of being my bias, I know the least about his personal life and interests, I suppose by his own choice. Also yeah, he is good-looking. All of Shinee are so so handsome.

Onew was actually also very young at the time they debuted.The clip's where he look's super cool with cross eyecontact's was when he was voted as the "1st and ONLY Best Leader Of The Year" (Gayo Daejun2015) by other Kpop Leader's and Idol's.He was also so young when they debut that he thought how could he lead his team when he himself is so young at that time,but due to his personality and because member's respect him the most,he did a great job. You can see clip's where he didn't need to speak just to control Taemin,he just smile at him or hold him in the hand and Taemin will immediatly behave.He is so kind and never get's angry at them that they feel more respectful toward's him.He never told them what to do but they follow him voluntarily. You can see it even on SM Town Family Concert's...while everyone is running arround,ONLY SHINee remain's together.They unconciously follow Onew without being told or if Onew need to call them he will just raise his hand even on crowded places and the member's constantly run toward's him.They would alway's look for him to be by his side.Especially Taemin,you can watch clip's of his mannerism where he would constantly run behind Onew for comfort and protection when he is shy or uncomfortable,he alway's hold's on to Onew.And member's and SM staff has a saying about "Onew know's everything".Like he know's when the member's need help or need something.A story when they just debut came on an interview where member's stated that 1 time Taemin got very sick on the dorm but they are all alone without their Manager and only Onew can control Taemin during his tantrum's when he is sick,but Onew was on taping that day so he will be back after midnight.They never tell anyone because they don't want to bother them especially Onew. So Taemin is very sick and having tantrum while Jjong just sit beside him on bed and don't know what to do so he just cried.Minho just look's at Key and waited for what they will do but Key was also lost in thinking when suddenly the dorm door open and Onew came in without telling anything and just ask them looking for Taemin.Then he just enter Taemin's room and took care of him.When ask by member's why he suddenly came home and ask for Taemin,he said that he just felt that the member's need him and that he need to see Taemin.From that day on,it became a talk among SM staff's and artist's and that's the start of the word "ONEW KNOW'S EVERYTHING".This just show how strong of a leader he is.❤❤❤

onew is one of those comfort idols. listening to him talk or sing is very soothing. i know that you are on your shinee journey and have recently gotten into nct, however, i want to point out another group: vixx. they are a six member group under jellyfish entertainment and are known as the kings of concepts. their debut was more joyful but they quickly shifted to having more of a darker / mature theme. since you enjoy dreamcatcher, i figured that vixx might be another group for you to potentially look into. the oldest has finished his military service, the other two older members are in the military now, and the younger three are gearing up to head into the military. songs that i would recommend are: 'on and on', 'eternity', 'error', 'chained up', 'voodoo doll' (explicit because of gore), 'dynamite' (part 1 of their god trilogy), 'fantasy' (part 2 of their god trilogy), 'the closer' (part 3 of their god trilogy), 'shangri la', 'scentist' (2018 - their lastest as ot6), 'parallel' (2019 - their latest as ot5). A lot of songs but their entire discography is one of my favorites. along with vixx, shinee and b.a.p are my three ult groups in kpop. i hope you are able to give them a listen!!

Onew's brand of leadership is perfect for a group filled with strong personalities. Imagine an alpha personality trying to lead Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin. I believe they wouldn't have stayed together for so long. And it may have even stunted the growth of the members if he didn't set such a giving and patient example.

And when you said, who controls the chaos. Onew does. Because he doesn't nag and doesn't talk a lot, when he does say something it's twice as effective. People often mistake his ability to take a joke or go along with his members as a deficiency with leadership. When in fact it's the most effective type of leadership for these group of people.
