Reminds me of your earlier videos. The ones that got me started down the rabbit hole. Timber Framing the easy way?? Hahaha, some labor required. I've lost 25 lbs. and can easily pick up one end of a 300 lb. Timber. And I'm only 64 years old. Imagine what I'll be able to do when I'm 70! LOL

Morning, Jim. Loving the man-glitter again. Still wishing you would use breathing protection with power tools. And hoping you don't regret not using it one of these days. Just looking out for your future health, friend. Great explanation on the brace, the square chart, and the offset for the housing. The only thing I would do differently would be to cut the other direction when cutting the little tip off with the circular saw, having the weight of the saw on the board instead of hanging over the tip in the air. It kinda twisted right before the small piece cut off. Any way, great video, can't wait to see the joints come together. Thanks for sharing this with us. L8R.

Windbracing is usually diagonal battens nailed on the underside of rafters as far as I know, I have seen it in technical books but have never come across it in real life. People keep giving me braces, one day I’ll put new jaws into them !

Hi Jim I'm doing a timber frame entry I have 6x6 posts with 4 x6 brace and I want to put my brace in the middle of the post. If I move my housing over to the middle do my braces look like yours or do I take the same amount off of each side of the brace?
@TheTradesmanChannel4 жыл бұрын
You can still do them this same way, helluva lot easier and faster.

Thanks for all the help with your videos. I had a question only laying out a 3/4 inch housing. You measure up 3/8ths for your 1/2 inch housing what is the measurement I would measure up for 3/4? Is it just 5/8ths? I was wondering how you came up with that measurement. Thanks!
@TheTradesmanChannel2 ай бұрын
Good morning. Draw a 45* line on a board and measure 3/4" on the 45* line from the edge (actually measure 3/4" to match the line). Mark it and then measure at a 90* from the edge to the mark and that will give you the measurement you need.

I have my Great Grandad's framing square and on the brace charts, all my fractions are off by exactly 1/100 from yours. I know that small detail has no real effect on layout. I just wonder if that varies by manufacturer or if it changed at a specific time due to more accurate math being applied. (The silly shit my brain wants to know)

Okay, you need to make sure that one side is square and work from there in setting the mortise and tenons (Part 1 & 2) but won't this affect the fit of the brace into the post and beam that joins into the underside of the post/beam that is not necessarily square? Thanks for these videos!
@TheTradesmanChannel3 жыл бұрын
Basically you have to cut the underside joinery square with the faces that are square. It sounds more complicated than it is. I'm doing another timber frame soon and hopefully I can do a better job teaching it this time.

You would probably be fine with a 24" brace layout, maybe even a 30" brace layout. Usually I make my braces 4"x6", you might be able to use 3"x5" braces.
@somedude-lc5dy3 жыл бұрын
why not cut these to match by laying them on the timber? are you assuming you don't have any timber cut yet?
@TheTradesmanChannel3 жыл бұрын
If you were doing a scribe rule timber frame you would probably do it exactly like what you're saying. When doing the square rule you're making it so that you can cut all of your pieces at once, meaning you can cut all your braces at once and then move on to cutting all your wall post mortises and tenons at once and so forth.
@somedude-lc5dy3 жыл бұрын
