spoke to an american couple in Sweden many yers ago that had a Norseman 43. I had an FP Athena 38 at the time and when we spoke I had been out sailing in some horrendous weather and did not have any problems, they had to go for shelter as the low bridge deck caused so much pounding that they where afraid something would break. I had a look underneath the boat and saw the flat underside with very little clearance. Would not do anything but coastal cruising with that boat. And also they had problems with leakages in the massive saloon windows, the flexing of the boat combined with the size was the skippers idea of the problem. Also the size and angle made for massive "greenhouse effect" inside. Would not have that boat!

There is an important relation ship between the beam and the bridge deck clearance. The wave pattern on a wider hulls is different so where the waves come together makes a difference where they hit the bridge deck and this also related to the speed .....so way more to consider that just the clearance.

Remarkably well kept boat for something that is 20 years old but if your going to spend $330,000 on a fast catamaran you can get something like a Seawind which is half the age of this boat, with all the design Innovations that happened over those ten years. That said this is still a lot of boat for the money. I would have a surveyor take a really good look at the sugar scoop extension though, because you often get issues after a few years unless the extension was done to a very high standard.

@kevinfisher13454 жыл бұрын
I agree there are a lot of positives with that, especially for a more performance oriented cat. But there are some negatives as well. They are minor though. For example an aft facing nav station is not ideal and would much prefer fwd facing one, but overall is lot more positives. The details in build quality is so hard to judge not in person, but it appeared to be more good quality or upper end of mid quality.

(General remarks / opinion, not only for this catamaran review) The (interior) walk-through at the end is very helpful. It gives a pretty good overview of the layout. I'd like to see some figures like standing headroom in the cabins/heads/showers/saloon, length and width of the bunks, distance between the bunk and the ceiling above it, etc. Imo this are important details for liveaboards and hardly to find in other reviews. Would offer true added value compared to other sources. Information like "lot of storage" is for the viewer (at least for me) pretty hard to quantify/estimate. At least a comparison with some similar sized boats would help. Or some measurements ;)

If you are going to review catamarsns you need to address bridgedeck clearance. This boat with extra wide beam and relatively low bridgedek clearance is famous for bridgedeck slamming, making for an uncomfortable ride in heavier seas.
@LearningtheLines4 жыл бұрын
I will do this in the next one. You're correct bridgedeck clearance is important for offshore passage making.
@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi4 жыл бұрын
Yep and from a person whos got as much knowledge about the sea to tell you its salty. . i thought that too. It looks beautiful but in heavy seas just like the big ones made in tasmania for the us forces
@adammallerman81534 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that's true but if you're buying cats from the 90s that's to be expected.
@grancito24 жыл бұрын
@@adammallerman8153 The new ones are no better than the 1980 one I sailed on, I could drive the dinghy through under it, but it would slam so bad at sea, when pushed too hard, it cause cracking in the tunnel.

I think that was an engine coolant heat exchanger hot water heater, not an isolation transformer. Good review and 329k is a lot for a boat but a new version of this would be a million plus.
@raywalker46564 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, nice yacht, couple of suggestions. Us catamaran sailors like to know things like what is the clearance between the bridgedeck and the water, This gives us an idea of whether it is a sea going vessel, and how bumpy it would get while sailing. another would be does it use dagger boards or skegs? I did not see any evidence of dagger boards so more than likely skegs, so whats the shallow draft? If it indeed has skegs, then I'm not sure I would class it as a performance boat, typically for fast closer to the wind headings dagger boards are a better option. What is the typical cruising speed of the yacht, under sail and under engines, and whats the engine run time? I owned Lock Crowther 10 meter, and I had bulbs added to the front, did not add to the rear which I could and probably should have. The major benefit of adding to the front was much better stability up front, more buoyancy where you need it really made cruising more comfortable on such a small boat. The fastest I achieved was 23 knots on a San Francisco to Catalina race with a crew of 4 on board. What was the hull construction? It looked like a very heavy boat, too much fiberglass not enough foam, so had all the creature comforts - but I suspect slow. Great video, hope we run across each other at some point, I live just N or Orlando. Keep it up, and congrats on the additional crew!

Yes I agree the wave slapping would be ever present under the bridge deak apart from the noise it certainly would effect performance. Sure it maybe could achieve 20 knots given the right conditions but those conditions would only represent maybe A 5 percent window in overall sailing conditions. Good clearance above the sea on the bridge deak makes for a consistent sailing cat in all conditions

What is the beam? I think it might be a challenge to get a place to haul it. Bow lockers on this boat are meant to be very light. There will be spray aboard and probability of leaks around deck access. Deck access would make sense in a cruising boat, but not this one.

Fair deal for a nice cat. The gelcoat interior and numerous step-over bulkheads will be a turnoff for many, but that makes for a strong easy care boat. Not having bow hatches is fine with me because it means no bow hatch problems. When you sail that fast you stuff the bows through lots of blue water. Tight interior access to clean space beats outdoor access to damp dirty space. I think the tanks were klutsy installs -waste of space.

I didn't see anything that looked like a shower in the port head. Randi said she saw one but I sure didn't. Besides that, this is a very nice looking boat - but as most/all very nice catamarans go, it's going for a high $ amount. Oddly enough if you remove the zeros from the price, that's fourteen dollars more than what I paid for my very nice 20' monohull back in 2016. Then, about the "bun in the oven", . . . Very Nice! Now, the timing seems very good as well since you now have the example of LaVaga/Lenny and SV Delos/Sierra to help. BUT, you have to have a boat before you can have a boat baby. : - )
