In today's video, I will discuss what I believe to be the number one reason that most new PDR Techs fail!
lpo.li/learpdronline-92
So if you're just starting off in the industry and you want to become a PDR
Technician, stay tuned. Now it's sad but true that we do have a high failure rate in the PDR industry in terms of new students becoming successful paid PDR Technicians.
So I've spoken to a few different PDR Techs, some students, done my own research, and I've come up with what I believe to be the most common cause of the failure rate in the PDR industry.

Well spoken sir. It's the main reason why most businesses fail. Not because of the skills of a trade, but possibly the lack of social skills and/or failure to connect to the market.

Thanks Terry, It certainly took me a while to realise and then work 'ON' the Business rather than just 'IN' the Business!

All good points Tom. I'm a DIY guy who likes to learn new things and watching PDR pros such as yourself has been a lot of fun. I get frustrated at times because I get to that 90% repair and then spend hours trying to get the mess cleaned up. Either I haven't learned to read the reflective line board correctly or I'm just not applying the correct process. I'm retired but I do auto repairs as a hobby. I'd like to offer PDR as well some day. I sure appreciate your work.

PDR can definitely be frustrating. Getting that last 10% is the hardest for everyone, it does come with time but there are lots of fine adjustments such as moving the reading board back further, increasing the light or reflection, re-positioning yourself at multiple angles etc Keep watching, keep practising my friend!

Yes John and that's ok too :) as you know I have a few students that are interested in PDR as a hobby and not as a full time business, this is for those that decided to become a full time PDR tech and then gave up on the dream when it got too hard. Glue pulling is huge at the moment and I'm enjoying it too, new products and techniques are developing all the time!

Biggest problem for me was finding cars to practice on.
@LearnPDROnline

Yes that can be difficult, for practice you can sometimes visit salvage yards or approach low end used car sales places. friends and family if you have them is also a good place to start 👍

Many people that start do not understand the high skill level required to do this job. I know I certainly did not. I saw youtube videos of glue pulling and thought, yea, I can do that. If you are older, you do not see how much physical activity is required up front. The biggest problem for me is the perfection level I expect from myself. I expect every job to come out perfect. What I have noticed, even the best out there do not leave the work perfect most of the time. Perfect to me is that it looks original in my eyes and that no experienced body man can see the difference. That is very very very hard to achieve. I have achieved that level a few times on small dents, but it is rare on anything large. The fact is, that most customers are happy if it looks good in the natural reflection. I think hail techs are pushed to a higher level of repair as there are so many dents that if their dents are not close to perfect the hood will look like a waffle. Business to me is just a matter of advertising and followup.(which most people do not understand how important followup is.) Also, people like me do not price effectively. That is a salemanship thing that many do not have, If you do not have that, then use a product like mobiletechrx or to quote jobs. Software does not feel guilty when making a quote. Just the facts ma'am. And only take on work you can do.

Thanks Allen, yes I agree, most customers do not see with the same level of detail as a tech and perfection is when you can not tell where the damage was at all. As you say this level comes down to the individuals eye for detail and need for perfection. I like how you said it comes down to advertising and follow up, yes two huge parts often over looked especially the follow up. For a tech perfection is the goal but for a business profit is the goal. In my opinion the customer experience is the most important part to focus on, if the customer has a great experience at each one of the touch points they are happy and happy customers make for a successful business.
