Hi Wesley, Thanks for your question I've tried a few different glue types but speaking with different technicians it seems the temperature or humidity where you are makes the biggest difference, for example 'Tab Weld' has good feedback but not so much in humid parts of the world such as Florida, 'Tequila' do a 'Cold weather' glue and 'Hawg' do a warm weather glue. I'm working in England and I have just started testing Tabweld but have tried a few different products from Dentrix and TDN I've also tried basic 'hobby' glue from DIY or Hardware stores which seems to pull ok but not so easy to remove from panels, Where are you based?

@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jack, thanks for message, really depends on the dent and the position and size etc, large flat panels will flex under pressure, if the actual dent is flexing when pushed you will likely have tension in the damaged panel or a high spot/crown which is holding the dent in if so the tension needs to be released whilst working out the dent...

Hi Dan, being in the UK I often use TDN, Dentrix and BLETools for tools and products but recently the dentrix tool site seems to be down so not very helpful at the moment. TDN stock a whole range of glues from around the world but personally I like BLE Tools, they have finally updated their website to make it easier to use and for years I have used their 'high strength' white and black glue sticks which I like, I've just started trying out TabWeld which does seem pretty good especially with the Gang Green Tabs (made by same company - Black Plague PDR) but I'm only 2 sticks in so far :) Also check out my reply to Wesley above for some temperature information! Will a cheap 100w glue gun and green catcus glue work? What do you spray to remove the glue?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 4 жыл бұрын
Good question, yes as long as the glue gun gets hot enough to really melt the glue then any glue gun will do whether its corded or gas, most glue guns take the same size glue sticks as standard but some of the small craft guns take a slimmer glue so maybe double check the chamber diameter fits your glue. With glue pulling there is a bit of trial and error in getting it just right, some of the dearer glue guns have temperature controls which can be useful for different glue sticks! I use Methylated spirits to remove the glue (and also clean the panel pre pull) Thanks for your comment!

How long should you leave the glue tab on the car before you try and pull the dent out..
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 2 жыл бұрын
There are a few variables to consider such as temperature, panel prep, brand of glue and the tabs and also the type of pull you are trying to achieve but generally for most small dents I find somewhere between 10-20 seconds is an average for me. Trial an error will help you here too, if it pops off too easily then either the panel was not clean, the panel has cooled too much or the tab has been left on too long, if it comes off and the glue is stringy then its not been left on long enough.

So what would a proper wait time look like? Half glue on the tab and half of the glue left on the panel?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, to be honest its a bit of trial an error with the various glues, temperatures and damage but usually the glue will be left on either the tab or the panel not both, if the glue is stringy when you remove it it wasn't left long enough and if the tab comes clean off with a light pull its usually been on too long. Most important thing is to have a clean panel to apply the tab too and then find the correct wait time for a good pull, i generally find somewhere between 10-20 seconds is long enough but as I say it really dpend on your climate and the panel temperature...

Hi Tom I have heard a few techs who also heat up taps to gain stronger pulls, have you tried this yourself ? Thanks.
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, I don't usually heat the tabs up unless its pretty cold, so for me this is more a trouble shooting option, ie if I'm not getting a good pull or the tabs are coming away from the glue then that is one of the things I try along with re-cleaning the tab and panel surface and warming the panel. There are some metal tabs out there, I haven't used these but if I guess these would respond better with some heat. Good question, Thanks

what happens if you pull a big chunk of paint off, what then ?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ron, this would only happen if the car has been previously repaired and repainted in that area or the wrong glue set up was used. Ultimately its on you the technician to assess the panel prior to carrying out repairs and have a conversation with your customer to understand there needs and go through the potential risks.

Does that not damage the clear coat upon pulling
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Keith, the glue we use is specifically designed for this purpose and can easily be removed without damaging the paint however this is on the assumption that the panel you are working on is original. If I can see a panel has had previous repairs, filler or paintwork then its unlikely I will glue pull as the risk of 'pulling paint' would be greater :)

@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline Жыл бұрын
There are loads of glues out there each one with different qualities such as better for warm weather or cold weather, light pull or strong pull and different working temps so 'The Best' glue will depend what it is you are using it for specifically and what temperature the overall environment is etc My advice is to buy PDR specific glue from a reputable supplier and most of the details will be listed with their product

what happens when you pull the clearcoat off, what does that mean?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Troy, usually it means the panel has been previously repaired and painted. If the paint is original and you are using PDR glue it should never pull the clear coat however unfortunately a lot of panels get repainted in bodyshops and you can never recreate the quality of the original paint. The panel will likely require repainting once again to rectify. Another thiing to watch out for is if you are working on an old classic car, they used different paint back then so the risk is also higher but modern water based paints should be fine if original.

Will a normal glue gun and hot glue work ?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise, good question. the glue we use has been designed for use on car paintwork, it remains flexible as opposed to most household craft glues that become hard and brittle, this allows the releasing agent to get behind the glue and release it from the panel easily. The glue gun itself can be 'normal' (just check the diameter fits the glue) but I would definitely get the correct PDR glue, glue sticks are very cheap to buy especially when compared to the cost of respraying the panel if you pull the paint off.

What is the optimum time to leave the glue on the panel?
@LearnPDROnline
@LearnPDROnline 2 жыл бұрын
There are a few factors to consider such as the brand of glue and tab you are using, the temperature of the panel and what you are pulling with ie a slide hammer or lifter and what you are trying to achieve with the pull so its tricky to put a time on it, trial and error is best but usually for most of my glue pulls its between 10 -30 seconds depending on the temperature of the panel, if you put it on and pull after 10 seconds and its not successful redo and leave for 20 seconds etc hope that helps

Hi Leo, thanks for your comment. Its difficult to say how long to leave the glue for as it depends how warm the panel is, what brand of glue you are using, the temperature of the glue gun and also the temperature of the environment ie working indoors or outdoors and in summer or winter. There are lots of variables that affect the time which is why I try to show you what a 'too early' pull looks like compared to a 'too late' pull time. I learned poor poor PDR when I went to a one on one Trainer. I have learned more from on line then I ever could in a month school. Sure if your not passionate about it and you dont have guidance you will develop bad habits BUT if you have half a brain and your doing on line training and you come up against something thats not working then you watch many different aproaches to the same problem and you find out what works and move forward. Way before on line training was a thing you had a lot of techs doing shit work but yet they were all trained in live situations. I have come across good PDR techs that say " if you take apart panels and you use non industry standard tools then it is not PDR" Even if you are getting great results. This industry can have a very narrow mind at times so be careful if you go with live training because they will fill your head with what they believe and not teach you to have a open minded and that there are many ways to learn ANYTHING!
