I forgot to mention the pod(e)- prefix! Pod(e)- means among others: 1. to place something under podkreślić - to underline podpisać dokument - to sign a document 2. to move upwards or towards podskoczyć - to jump up podnieść pudełko - to pick up the box podejść do kogoś - to appoach someone 3. to do something secretly, often illegally podsłuchiwać - to eavesdrop (to listen to someone without their permission) podrabiać - to counterfeit, to fake (e.g. money, signature) If you want to read more functions and examples of the Polish prefixes, you can check in the dictionary doroszewski.pwn.pl/ Type the prefix (pod-, nad-, etc.) in the search box, and click "Szukaj".

this is a topic i have long struggled with, sometimes the differences are subtle or aesthetic as some of my polish friends say , like for example dopomóc wspomóc and pomóc , or głaskać/pogłaskać and wygłaskać , verbs of motion also have a lot of variations , but i never understood the subtle differences between them all , thank you very much for the amazing lesson.

Fantastic video Monika, thank you so much. I love your style of teaching which is for me unparalleled. The clarity and structure of your lessons is perfect, and I like the way that your lessons are in English which helps me to understand the whys and wherefores of Polish grammar (the "total immersion" style of language learning doesn't work for me).

The way I like to interpret things like "pomóc" is that "a little strength helps". It must have made sense to someone in the distant past. With należeć being maybe more poetic, that if you put something on, it's a bit like lying down, so since you can lie down there like on a bed in your house, then that's where you belong. I don't know how far fetched this one is, but I feel like that's how it can be interpreted.

A lot of these prefixes seem to have the same function that they have as isolated prepositions.

As always excellent lesson. I consider these suffixes one of the hardest traits of polish language, as hard as cases. Other languages use them to differentiate verbs too, but polish uses them more One question though : Does the form "napisać" have two meanings? First meaning is the perfective form of "pisać" like in "wrote until completion" and second meaning would be "write something down" ?
@PolishwithMonika
@PolishwithMonika Жыл бұрын
"Napisać" means "to write", "to have written" and is the perfective aspect. Compare: IMPERFECTIVE ASPECT "PISAĆ" (focus on ongoing action) On pisze. - He is writing. On pisał. - He was writing. On będzie pisać. - He will be writing. PERFECTIVE ASPECT "NAPISAĆ" (focus on completion) On napisze. - He will write. / He will have written. On napisał. - He wrote. For "pisać" na- is the most neutral prefix to show the perfective aspect. Other verbs like "spisać" or "wpisać" are also in the perfective aspect but the meaning is less neutral, focusing on a more specific action. For different verbs the most neutral prefix showing the perfective aspect might be different. For the verbs robić, gotować, czytać, the most neutral verbs showing the perfective aspect will be: zrobić, ugotować, przeczytać. I hope that what I WROTE makes sense. | Mam nadzieję, że to, co NAPISAŁAM, ma sens. :)

If I were to translate “to write something down” I would use the word “zapisać”. This is usually a short note. If you are writing a letter or a book, you use the word “napisać”.
@PolishwithMonika
@PolishwithMonika 11 ай бұрын
Yes, thanks! That maybe makes more sense in the translation into English! Although I guess it much depends on the context. zapisać - to write down, to write a note Zapisałam jego numer. - I wrote down his phone number. napisać - to write, to have written Napisałam wiersz. - I wrote a poem. Napisz odpowiedź w zeszycie. - Write the answer in the notebook.

The word "przejrzeć" fits better here. Przejrzałem tę książkę, ale mnie nie zaciekawiła. Przejrzałeś ten artykuł, który ci podesłałem? The word "przewertować" is also used mainly in reference to books, files. Przewertować książkę, akta.

dokończyć zadanie can you just say: kończyć zadanie?
@PolishwithMonika
@PolishwithMonika Жыл бұрын
There is a slight difference. 'Kończyć' means 'to finish', 'to be finishing' and focuses on repetitive or ongoing action. Kończę zadanie. - I am finishing the task. 'Dokończyć' means 'to finish, 'to have finished' and focuses on a completed action. Dokończę zadanie. - I will finish the task.
