it was De Gemini if I got his name correct 'He used a chromatic harmonica that he would take apart and adjust to how he wanted it to sound for him to get the ghostly notes, In the film once upon a time ,apparently he mess with the harmonica so it would be hard for any other instrument to replicate the tune, He was the man who got called upon in a lot of westerns films when a harmonica was needed to be played, hope that answered your question,

Hi Liam! You could get the double notes if you play it on a half valved C diatonic harp on the 4 and 5 blow holes, the bend is on the 5 blowbend. Nice video mate keep it up! I do think the original is played on a chrom btw. On the G harp you just play the 6 draw and slightly tilt back to 5 draw to make them sound simultaniously a bit, you will hear the raspy effect too... I think it comes pretty close.

I believe he is achieving the two note effect by holding the slider half way in at just the right spot (that's what I've found works for me). However, he is switching from E to D sharp just with the slider, without changing holes. This seems to be possible on a chromatic harmonica tuned in B or D (I think).

I bought a chromatic C just for the Charles Bronson tune. What I found is you can’t duplicate exactly without modifying. The problem is you have to smoothly alternate notes. The only way is to change the notes on each side of the proper note. I’m working on that now.

To this end, De Gemini physically adapted his favourite harmonica - a Hohner Chromatic - in order to create an individual sound which is heard repeatedly throughout the film. He took the harmonica apart and rebuilt it. Famously, some of the music for the film was recorded before filming and played during shooting. De Gemini was also on the set to tutor Charles Bronson in how to use the harmonica." If only they explained how he rebuilt it - or what exactly it achieved ...

When the 'harmonica' character gets the instrument stuffed in his mouth by Henry Fonda in the movie, the instrument never moves ... My pet theory is that the 'harmonica' character's melody is the sounds actually coming out of the instrument during this stressful time, that the 'harmonica' character then plays to haunt his enemies (maybe a stretch, I know!). Re: whether the original uses a chromatic harp, I think it does. @@Learntheharmonica I just bought a G Chromatic and figured out how they played the two notes simultaneously. Draw an E on the 7th hole and 'very slowly' move the slide into blowing the Eb. So in the transition to Eb, you get a slight dissonant D into the Eb.

I am a novice with my Hohner Chromatic 'C' Chromonica 270 and no matter how I try many different ways to bend 6, it's not possible, because I have to -5 to get the exact second note. I heard that the original musician used a Chromonica and wondered if he did a little modification from 5 to -5, because after all, both 4 & 5 are both the same notes and by modifying this, it would produce the perfect bend without inhaling. Is that possible?

Bojack Hex it would be difficult because you wouldn't have all the notes you'd need so you'd then have to use complicated techniques to get the missing notes. Bear in mind that you can play it on any key harmonica, I was just using three different harmonicas to play it in the original key of the song. Basically, don't worry about it too much :)

I have never played a Hammond HA-20 but as far as I know it a standard-tuned diatonic harmonica so it should be fine. The only thing is that it can't be played in the original key on a C harmonica, so you'll be playing it in a different key from the original soundtrack. Apart from that you'll be fine. You need a diatonic harmonica, and in order to play in the correct key you will need one of the keys in this video. But if you don't mind playing the song in a different key from the original then you can use any harmonica, as long as it's a diatonic, otherwise you won't be able to get the bending sound.
