As you may have noticed, there are 3 portfolios missing from the video. Something weird happened during the recording and the footage was unusable. However since we had the comments done, I decided to keep them on the list and add the comments here to the comment section. Let me know if you agree or not with the comments, and what would you add to the critique. Hamsa: issuu.com/hamsanh/docs/hamsa_hegade__portfolio_2021.compressed + Oliver: I liked that there are many construction details, which is not always common to them well placed see in portfolios. + Steven: I liked the connection between the colors of the cover and the TOC. It's subtle, but it's a nice touch - Oliver: Most of the pages have too many elements. It often feels noisy and cramped. I'd try to give each drawing more space, either by reducing the number of drawings, or adding more pages. - Steven: The cover and TOC colors are nice as I mentioned, but then these color tags lack a bit of purpose on the page. They don't connect with the project. Mucella Beyza Isin: issuu.com/mucella/docs/mucellabeyza_portfolio1 + Oliver: I liked the consistent minimal project opening structure. And my favorite spread was the 28-29 with the sequence of diagrams and nice color palette. + Steven: I find it interesting to list many projects in the TOC and then mark the ones that are going to be shown in the portfolio. This is not necessarily what happened here, but at first look that was what I thought. - Oliver: I feel that her collages that open the project could be improved. They often show more the artistic skills, than the actual design choices. - Steven: Maybe she could take advantage of a full spread drawing to change up the pace of the portfolio. Atharva Jadhav + Oliver: The project opening has an interesting structure. The icon is minimal and well done, and doesn't distract from the main image. + Steven: Great diagram skills, maybe they could be explored a bit more on the portfolio. - Oliver: The drawing's name with a highlight effect causes some unnecessary visual noise. - Steven: Yes, but this same icon is not well placed on the TOC. There are just too many elements, try concentrating on one solution

So, I do enjoy your Portfolio reviews and appreciate your input in the Architrecture community in General. However, it would be nice to see the pair of you review an Architectural Portfolio based on it's Architectural content and quality sometimes. I understand that your interest and focus is primariry in the graphical elements in Architecture but for quite a number of interns, graduates and Architect's out there, the Architectural content and ideas are what get them hired. Technical skills do matter but a shout out to the Architecture at times would be interesting.

You're totally right! What needs to be worked on and perfected first is the actual content showing the quality of the designs. And although we can spot when a project isn't that good and actually comment on the design, our expertise is visualization and representing within architecture. Meaning that we know what it takes to enhance and fix drawings, images, renderings, layouts, compositions, and so on. That's where we believe we can bring the most value to you guys. I appreciate the feedback for sure! Hopefully, we can add a range of comments in future episodes while maintaining the value of the videos. Thanks @lvseka

Thank you for the great video! I have to ask though, why in the world are we still doing arch portfolio in PDF form? Every other industry is doing websites. I don't see the benefit other than printing and so old school recruiters at firms can download and save them. Can someone explain this? The idea that recruiters can't save links is absurd. I've worked in the advertising industry for several years now. We do project based work just like arch projects. The only form of portfolio excepted is website. If you sent in a PDF you would be laughed at. Explain why it is different?
@LearnUpstairs11 ай бұрын
Great question! The first thought that comes to mind and that has always been the main problem is that Architects are not web developers. Sure there are a ton of templates available to make this process easier, but you then rely on it to make it work, which also doesn’t allow complete creative freedom. Creating a unique website and learning this skill is important for many other industries, but maybe not for the typical architect. This specific type of portfolio that we’re reviewing here is mostly used by students, where there’s even less reason to go after a website platform and pay a subscription. Ultimately a small compressed PDF is an easy way to send across attached to an email, upload to a master’s application form, and it’s also easy to store hundreds of small documents for a quick selection process. It’s important to point out that a linear portfolio, such as a sequence of spreads exported in a PDF format gives the author full control over the narrative. You can set the pace of your work, you can direct the viewer to specific information, and take the burden of deciding what to view and where to click out of the viewer. Even after laying all of this info and mentioning why I find that this particular type of portfolio works for students, I too feel that we might need to evolve to a different solution. Still don’t think that a website works for all the people in this industry, but maybe that changes or we find something in between these solutions! 😁

@@LearnUpstairs thanks for the comment! Yes, controlling the viewing experience and narrative makes sense. I wish more architecture students and professionals could discover how interactive and more entertaining a website can be. Wix, square space and the others are so easy to use after watching three KZbin videos. Love your videos! Keep up the good stuff and thanks again!

Is square format is acceptable in universities admission ?
@LearnUpstairs11 ай бұрын
I believe so! I'd say any page aspect ratio is acceptable. Usually, applications only specify the number of pages or total MB size, but it's always recommended to check the admission page to see the details in full.
