Xin chào Annie! First I'd like to say I love your lessons. I have just started learning Vietnamese and have discovered many resources, however, yours are by far my favorite. Thank you for all your hard work! I absolutely love this particular video because I am a huge Phúc Mập fan. His videos and Chris Lewis (aka Cờ Rit) are part of the reason I became interested in studying Vietnamese. When I read the video title I didn't know it was going to be Phúc Mập and when you called him Brandon, I was thinking, "Who is Brandon? Do I know of him...?" Haha, so it was so delightful to see it was Phúc Mập. I'm sure he watched this and laughed and learned a lot. Also, it is fun to see you laughing at and enjoying his silliness. He really is a funny and great guy. Cam ơn! ~ Rick

These are so useful! Thanks so much! Some people hesitate to correct others because they're being nice, but I love when they do. (I got lucky to find a Vietnamese barber here in my new neighborhood who loves to correct me. Now I have to get my hair cut more often. :)

I'm studying Northern Vietnamese still I always enjoy your videos and find them really helpful. This one was awesome and pointed out some mistakes I make all the time. Can we actually say, that "này" goes always with a classifier as a rule?
@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie
@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, classifier + noun + này / đó. This will sound like a self-serving advice haha but don't you worry about the accent/dialect thing. Northern, Southern, or Central, they're all valid representatives of the Vietnamese language. :)

6:27 As a westerner trying to understand what his intention was in this language exchange, I think he was trying to say "(People who are) vegetarians can't (or don't) eat this (chicken)", in which case, can you use 'nguoi' to refer to people in general who are vegetarian don't eat chicken? Or how would you say that specifically in VN? 10:40 Why use Em quay lai...? He's talking to a chicken, so shouldn't he use Ba or Anh? Does it depend on how he perceives that animal, like he sees himself as the father of that pet who will provide for it or perhaps an older brother since the chicken is younger than him? Thank you so much for the content! I was listening to your videos in 2013 before I moved to Vietnam. One day I will have to learn formally because my wife doesn't know how to teach grammar. Keep doing your wonderful thing Annie!

Why use Em quay lai...? She is referring to herself so yes, he wouldn't use Em unless he wants to be more silly.

I was walking my dog earlier and an old guy said to me "chó đẹp". Was his grammar wrong or did my dog remind him that all dogs are beautiful. The former seems more likely but he's a native speaker.

Hey, this is a very good question! I know right, this classifier thing is just complicated and full of exceptions. Anyway, I think it's safe to say that when you make an exclamation, you could say just the noun and skip both classifiers and this/that/these/those. So, if I see a very delicious looking cake, I can say: "Bánh nhìn ngon quá!" (and I mean, "this cake"). The old guy seeing your dog similarly can say: "Chó đẹp quá!" (and he means, "your dog" or "this dog"). Hope this helps!
@ellustrator100

Thank you for the explanation! I love your videos they help me a lot. This/that/these/those are collectively known as demonstratives. I presume you knew that already though but didn't want to use too much metalanguage.
@sazji

@@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie It sounds like the functions of classifiers, in addition to "classifying," also overlaps with that of a definite article in English. In English we could say, rather formally, "the dog is nice." But more informally, as an exclamation, we'd just say "nice dog." Kind of similar?

Hi Annie, below is my English lesson for you. I don't think you really meant any of these with your video title. Perhaps you mean "dissects". rip apart (idiom): 1. Literally, to tear someone or something into several pieces. 2. To cause great damage, disorder, or ruin to someone or something. 3. To criticize, upbraid, or condemn someone or something severely or thoroughly.
@jacknoble9054

Actually, I think she meant definition number 3! It's a joke, satirising typical click-bait KZbin video titles, like 'So-and-so DESTROYS So-and-so'.
@eydaimon
@eydaimon 5 жыл бұрын
@@jacknoble9054 maybe. It wasn't my take away from watching the video. I didn't feel like she criticized anyone in that manner, and given that she's not a native English speaker, it seemed way more likely that she's using the phrase wrong. Just try'n to be helpful
