Since he liked Tesla so much I suggested he look at a 22+ Model 3/Y used private sale. Private sale in AZ you don't have to pay sales tax and the new RYZN chip means updates will be coming for years to come. Also you don't have to buy a used private sale car in AZ. It can be anywhere in the US.

John is a smart man. For day to day driving and in my case even for long distance. It is impossible for an ICE vehicle to compete on cost. Outside of road trips I never exceed 200 miles in a day. My Model Y is the lowest cost operation I ever experienced in a car, in 35 years of car ownership. I am not some environmental guy. EVs are just less costly, nicer, quieter, easy and pleasant to drive, very fast and just overall a superior product hands down to ICE.

The $22k includes fees and taxes. The $37k does not. How much is that $37k after interest rates and taxes? The $37k vs $22k argument is disingenuous at best. Where does $37k even come from? I'm seeing Model 3 LR $49,130, After Federal Tax Credit* $41,630. leasing is fine for people who change their cars often as cars likely depreciate more than the cost of a lease. You have to do your research though and also look for good deals. He also leased during the pandemic where it was a seller's market so that example makes even less sense. I can't recall if tax credit were even available at the time. I know someone who got a the Y performance for $66k in May 2022 and it's worth half that now 2 years later.

As you look at other EVs, make sure you study where you’re going to take it for service. Other EV start up brands, especially from overseas, do not have the service infrastructure. study that well before you make a decision. In addition to the decision about any long-distance travel. Again, you’ll probably just find one EV maker that fits the bill.

As long as you have a Tesla, road trips are absolutely not an issue. The supercharger net Work and the Tesla ability to plan your trip with just minimal charging stops can’t be compared to any other EE where you are trying to use the proven unreliable public fast charging infrastructure. So it’s not just around town. It’s for everything that you wanna do. Talk to anyone who owns a Tesla and drives longer distances regularly.

Another important factor on lease cost is insurance. The times I’ve leased they require a very high limit insurance so it ends up costing 50-70% more than insuring a regular financed car, that’s when I understood it was better to buy because the payment + insurance when financing was almost the same as the lower payment when leasing + more expensive insurance.

I have to differ about the long distance driving and the '3 day weekend' being bad with an EV. This guy has kids. His ability to drive straight for 3 hours without the kids or wife wanting to get out to get some food/use the restroom is not gonna happen. At the 3 hour mark, no matter what he is stopping. Plugging in to charge and then using the bathroom/getting food will probably get him from 20% to 70% of charge. In that ICE car, he would have the same issues, BUT have to allocate time to get to a gas station with no line and then the time to pump the gas. On a 3 day weekend trip, he may 'waste' 10 minutes with an EV compared to an ICE car. This goes to zero if they do not eat meals in the car. Think I am wrong? Hop in an ice car. As you pull into the gas station, turn a stopwatch on. Do what you would normally do, and as you leave, turn the stopwatch off. It actually is a lot longer than you think.

I just leased a base 2024 M3 RWD with $4,000 due at signing and a $380 monthly payment. That's $17,680 after 3 years + disposition cost and potential dings. Financing it for 72 months is about double the lease price with the same due at signing. Since tech advances fast and in 3-6 years Tesla's cars will improve drastically, you can safely assume their cars will depreciate about $15-17k by the end of the lease term. If you lease, you are essentially paying what you would lose in depreciation if you had chosen to finance or buy the car. You can also expect Tesla to slash prices over time, as they have done many times, to make their cars more affordable. Leasing is definitely the way to go at the moment, unless you want to 'own' the car.

Check the trade in (depreciation), it may be the same or more than the total lease cost. Some prefer to have a newer car that’s still under warranty. Others plan to drive it for 10 years or more. Don’t assume that your preferences are the same as everyone else’s.

In my limited experience with leases small dings are considered normal wear and tear and don’t result in extra charge charges. I would say that the charge for refinishing the wheels is appropriate but those little dings in the bumper should not have resulted in any . In addition, doing the inspection by having people send in photos is just lazy service. For end of lease inspections, I’ve had the opportunity to talk over the inspection with an actual person. What a concept.

Probably…you CAN’T modify a leased car. Think of a leased car as a rental. Care are depreciating assets anyway. Just drive the thing 2-3 years and get a brand new one. Let someone else pay for repairs, depreciation and battery degradation.

What the working class doesn’t realize is the wealth gap has grown exponentially since 2017…before that actually and there’s a large group…getting larger daily who don’t care brah. We’d rather have a new car every 2-3 years, NEVER pay for maintenance or worry about deprecation\battery degradation. Our BMW lease is up in a couple months. We charge in the garage to 100% as needed. Think we care what the battery condition is when it’s turned in?

As you said Jeeps Tesla 10 out of 10 so there's no dilemma on what to do get rid of the lease car and the prices of Teslas are awesome right now get a model y and you're set family perfect their peanuts they're all selling for under $30,000 like a couple of years old leasing doesn't make any sense you have to watch the mileage blah blah all this and you can't buy it out that's the other one especially as you said with Tesla which is not great they want to make the money.... And they don't care about you what you invested in the car obviously! Buy a used one 10 out of 10 definitely

Tesla does not fix those minor problems, they just sell it, don’t even clean it. That is a flat rip off. That is not cool. I just bought a M3 from Tesla 2021 and it had almost the same damage on it and they didn’t fix it. Unlike other car, manufactures and dealerships their cars are never seen until it’s sold. And the buyer is going to loose order fee and transport fee, us it was $1500.00. Beware buying used from Tesla, can’t see it before u spend money that u won’t get back if you don’t buy it.

So this was shot in May? Those Rivian deals ended in May. There's a new one now but no more Model year discount which were random by VIN anyway and could be anything between $1k off to $7k off. But it's just $6k off on Large pack R1Ts now. So not as good anymore. The example you gave was from a tax up front state and seems like they even charge tax on the full MSRP and not just the amount you're financing for the lease. States who do it that way are a minority but also it's taxes so it must be paid. Most other states it's like $3k up front for fees and first month and then you pay taxes monthly on your monthly payment like for example 7% on the $488. It's also 35 monthly payments as your up front costs already included the first month payment. Your calculation was for 37 months. I was able to snag an R1T in May and my total lease cost was $5k cheaper than the example you gave.

$666 a month is what the real cost is on the R1 Jeebs references. Yes your only paying 24k but you divide that by 36 months and that is your true monthly payment. You just put a large down-payment is all.

This week I drove the new Model 3 Highland. Assuming he is focused on a new car, and UNLESS your buddy needs an SUV or Truck... he has only 1 economic choice: the Model 3 Highland! If he needs an SUV for Family and Road Trips, the Model Y is the One to Get! If he does reform his opinion to not drive the car on road trips, then AWD is great, otherwise as a local Phoenix commuter ONLY the RWD version would be stunning. I've owned a Model Y LR for 52k miles over 2yrs-4mo as our primary car for all vacations and long road trips ... so I most certainly do not agree with the idea that they don't make gr8 road trip cars ... as long as it is a Tesla branded car, give availability of Super Chargers.
