I just put a speed reducer on my 1541, it was a pain but worth the aggravation, I had to place two new belts on it (a 36 inch from motor to large 9 inch Pully, and a forty inch from the machine to the 3 inch pully) it was basically what you see here. Just minor adjustments and table cleaning and I’m good to go. To bad nobody tells ya what the set back is or how to do it an easy way for pully placement

Thank you for the kind comment. If I was to do anything else (or different) it would be to replace my motor pulley with a smaller one for just a little more speed reduction. Depending on location, I think a smaller motor pulley could be purchased for somewhere around $4.00-$9.00 USD. I would rather have to adjust the speed a little faster for my comfortable zone with the added benefit of low end torque than wish it went just a little bit slower.

So now what do you do for a bobbin winder? You had to remove it when you recut the slote and changed the configuration of the belt angle as it goes through the table.

My bobbin winder is on top of my machine not the side like some, so I got lucky! If it was on the side and had to be removed because of the pulley, I would use a cheap small drill.

Anytime cutting formica just use painters tape then draw your line the tape won't allow it to chip off and you get a clean cut

I think you and I have the same sewing machine motor. I was wondering if yours had that cork brake installed in it? I am thinking of taking it out, so I can use the hand wheel to manually lower the needle without stepping on the treadle

Hi, I don't think I have a cork brake. I do raise and lower the needle to and from the work piece with the pulley. I (as a novice) find it easier to get more precise placement. I also don't do production work and time isn't an issue so taking extra time for me is better (and I can use all the help I can get!). I also use my grip on the pulley while running the machine at times to act as a speed reducer. I hope this helps.

Hey, you would either need to change the balance wheel for a cogged one from sailrite, they are called the power plus and monster 2 balance wheel.... or you can get sailrites servo motor they have just brought out its called the workhorse ... its made for leather sewing its absolutely fantastic

its a bit off a pain but starting by alining lines with the actual motor on bottom of desk. use this to layout and assure belt alignment , saves a lot of grief and is so worth it.

I want to put my motor right next to my pully but I am not sure if it is okay to have that low of surface area of the belt in contact with the motor.

TheDeathofGrace I would space the pulley and motor away at least a couple inches. It is hard to get a good tension on the belt if it is too close or too far apart. If you look at the video you will see the distance between my pulleys. I would not mount it any closer. Also remember to make sure you have adequate tension on the sewing machine pulley. I hope this helps.

I’m sorry I didn’t see your comment sooner. when the motor is going slower, you lose torque. the idea behind the pullies is to lower the speed of the needle going up and down but have a higher motor rpm so you don’t lose torque. I find the torque is usually more than adequate. I mean there have been times I helped turn the wheel to either go around corners and wanted more control of the needle placement or wanted to start or finish in a particular spot and didn’t want to test the speed (or my luck) of the needle going up or down too fast. Hope this helps.

Thank you for such a nice comment! I hope it helps you. Another KZbinr to watch is Arthur Porter. He teaches a leather crafting channel and helped me a bunch. He also teaches that the cheapest way to slow down a sewing machine is to hold the machine pulley with one hand while feeding the leather with the other hand. That process works but I like to be able to keep both hands on my project while sewing and trying to keep a straight sew line.

I still use this setup today. I haven’t been making much in leather these days, if I had an extra $3,500, I’d probably get a saddle stitching machine because of the leather work I like to do. I have been very happy with this setup and would continue to recommend this as an affordable solution or fix for too fast a stitching speed for the torque needed.

I think Thad’s servo motor have speed adjustable from 0 to 2850 rpm

The problem with just adjusting the RPM of the motor lower is that you have no torque for the needle to penetrate the leather. When the motor is running at a faster speed, it develops more power for the needle to push thru. I used pulleys or "gearing" to mechanically allow the motor to run at a higher speed which also has more torque while the needle is moving at a slower speed for control.

Ho solo installato l'adattatore nel mezzo per ridurre la velocità della macchina da cucire. Non ricordo le dimensioni della puleggia motore originale, penso che potrebbe essere di circa 50 mm.

I am about to but my second and better machine, how satisfied have you been with the new model consew 1206rb. It seems a lot cheaper than the old 206rb-5 and for some curious reason they have already got rid of the nice bobbin winder on the newer 1206rb-1's Just hoping for some feedback on how well it had held up and how smooth and quiet it was before the speed reducer, I am a canvas guy. thanks... Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. This is my first and only machine so I have no real comparison experience. I have used 207 and 138 threads and they both work. You have to get more torque when going slow and that is why I put the reducer on. Now I can go slow and have the torque to push through the leather layers. The bobbin winder works great, don't know why they tossed it. I am now in the need of a good machine tuner to look it over and do their magic.

Awesome video! You've gone into every detail. I'm gonna recommend this to a buddy of mine that is also looking to slow down his machine. Do you think that it would be a lot easier to do all of this of installing the pulley and motor by securing the sewing machine to the table and turning the table upside down? (Having some saw wood horses on the sides to hold the edges of the table) or can it damage the machine? Thank you in advance.

I think it would be easier as far as comfort goes however the sewing machine pan has oil in it that the sewing machine uses to lube the upper part of the machine. I think from a time saving standpoint it would be faster to just remove the machine and work on it from the bottom. The actual install doesn't really take too long and it's not too hard either. My problem is that I needed a belt and decided to wait till the next day to get it. I hope it this helps. I do love the machine going slower and wished I did it sooner.

I got the pulley from ebay and paid $145.00 including shipping. The seller is nick-osewmidwest. Hope it helps. The're cheaper ways but this was the easiest and I felt the most reliable.

why didnt you just mount the speed reducer pulley on the top of your table behind the right side of machine? Seems like you had enough room there.

There was not enough room to mount it and have the belts go from motor to pulley then to sewing machine head pulley without cutting way too much table away. It would make the table way too weak in that area and possibly break. In the position it’s mounted it is also out of the way. The less “stuff” you have on top of the table the better.

Spoiler alert, I highly recommend this or any quality pulley reduction. If your thinking about it, get it. I just had my machine tuned up/adjusted and a couple replacement parts for $200.00. This sewing machine rocks now.

Hi if you put masking tape on what ever you are cutting it will not chip, what ever it is wood door countertop the tape will keep it from chipping. By the way we both have the same machine yours is a newer model I got mine in about 2000, you need to be carful buying sewing machines it become addicting I have 4 industrial machines. Fishhog.

Thanks for the comment, The table has a plastic laminate top and had I done what I was supposed to do and scored it or put tape down, the chips wouldn't of happened, good case of slow down so you can go faster. Good catch though. take care.
