The strip technique with compound is a fantastic follow-up to sharpening the back side with a sharpening stone. Screaming sharp results that makes skiving as smooth as eating ice cream. Make the sharpness last a lot longer too so you can get the best out of your tool. Thanks for sharing this, Master.

4, 6 8 & 10 should be enough for most scenarios with 8 and 4 being the most common sizes I grab

Hi, thanks for your video. Can you use this tool in place of a skiving knife for thinning leather in bookbinding? If so, where do you recommend getting one? Cheers, Nicola
@LeathercraftMasterclass Жыл бұрын
Anything is possible, but I'd recommend an English paring knife which is better suited to the task. Abbey England sells them.

EDIT:: I just saw you answered someone and said you mostly use 4 and 8. Can you explain why you use those sizes more than 6mm? What do you use 4mm for, and why 8mm over 6mm? I don't have the money to buy a whole set of Palosanto skivers. They sell four sizes, but which would you say would be the one or two sizes to buy? I was first thinking 6mm. (If I was only buying one) But then I have seen many people say 8mm is usually the best french skiver size... And then i've seen videos where 4mm can be useful for other purposes like grooving leather to be bent at 90 degrees and other smaller jobs. Basically I'm wondering, if I'm going to try and buy two, would you buy a 4mm and a 6mm? Or a 4mm and 8mm? Or which two of the four would you say people would get the most use out of? I'm making mostly smaller goods, sometimes medium jobs like costume accessories.

Try not to overthink it Drew. You won't make a mistake with any of those sizes. I used a 6 for a couple years by itself without issue, but 4&8 cover more ground.

Great video! Have you ever used a sharpening stone to re-hone the edge on one of these? I have an older French skiver that I just can’t seem to get sharp anymore.
@LeathercraftMasterclass3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have, this one didn't come that sharp so I had to show it the diamond plate. If it's old and worn, you may have gone past hardened edge at the front.
@stormpooper1003 жыл бұрын
Leathercraft Masterclass great to know I can get the edge back. How did you hone the inside edge? Sandpaper strips?
