PLEASE READ! This is not an Arc problem, its a cutter problem. According to many here, these cutters have been found on tools as far back as OCTOBER 2022. Up until this point I have NEVER broken a set of replacement cutters...this is incredibly strange. WHY IT MATTERS: up until this point I've never questioned if leatherman cutters could cut it. I've been able to do a lot in the past, but now I am questioning their strength. Many other brands, including those made overseas are not showing this issue...thats not good for Leatherman

Got my Arc last week - saw this today. Will not attempt cutting wire until Leatherman supplies its customers with quality blades. How embarrassing for them and disappointing for us.

Max, people never should have praised the replaceable wire cutters. There was a 25 year warranty on the non-replaceable cutters, so they had an incentive to make them good. Now they can just send out junk and tell customers: "Hey, you can replace the cutters".

Hi. I can understand your POV, but I still prefer replacable cutters (if they are not bad quality). - Because even with 25 years free warranty, you have to pay the shipment. Its could be as expensive as new cutters. - Because warranty can take some weeks and your tool is not available when needed during this period. - Beacause its easier to disassemble for just a quick sharpening. - And because replacable cutters are better looking.

Honestly I've had no issues with mine,but I don't cut coat hanger wire either since all are different an made of different metal mixtures,I've cut bailer wire at work sweating bullets an it handled it like a champ like a smaller lighter surge,but that's just me,I'm not overly abusing my tools

Heat treat. Sometimes batches of metal don't get treated properly and failure happens. I just tried mine (recently bought ARC) on a coat hanger, it was just fine.

Thanks for bringing attention to this. One thing that’s strange is that some people are reporting that their cutters don’t have a gap. Strange that there would be two different cutter styles out there if those reports can be confirmed.

Ever since hearing how much it costs I considered the Arc to be a collectors' piece, not an actual worktool (and as such, useless). Leatherman probably thinks the same, hence seemingly no testing but an insane pricetag. They too caught the "let's try to be a luxury brand" bug.

If you compare the ARC (new) cutters to the P4, they are slightly rounded at the bottom leaving the space that is creating the issue. Wonder if it’s a new supplier of the cutters as it seems like the old are straighter/90° angle.

Same here. I use it daily with repair work and small electronics. I haven’t tried cutting hard wire with it yet, but the soft wire cutters in the arc didn’t seem to work as well as on my Center Drive.

There are far more failures on leatherman’s, Nik Doulas has had three leathermans all fail within months frame failure, spring failure, bits cracking and rust, he’s had no failures on any Victorinox, including one in constant use since 1997…

I’ve been having problems with manufacturers not heat treating Magnacut correctly to achieve it’s stated stainless properties. I’m curious why Leatherman coated their blade...

if it's not hardened, it will not break at all, it will just bend. if it breaks, it's because the heat treatment was made at a too high temp or because there is a fail with the tempering process.. you can tempering it yourself by heating it to 250 degrees C, ( dark yellow color steel). i didi it on mine, because i suspected a too hard heat treatment.

LOL Leatherman charging over $200 for trash. I figured it was all hype when I saw they had a coating on the Magnacut blade even though Magnacut is pretty much corrosion proof. That's all for fashion for the hipster collectors.

Magnacut is certainly not corrosion proof. If you look at the specs, the steel has higher wear resistance, rust, and edge retention. But it’s not anywhere close to being corrosion proof. That’s why they coat it to give it better resistance.

@@Mikey-ym6ok Spyderco has included Magnacut, along with LC200N and H2, in its "Salt" line, so it must be extremely corrosion resistant. And more so than any of the other knife steels Leatherman uses that don't have coated blades. The extra expense for the coating could've been better used to give the Arc cutters that don't easily break.

I've cut countless coat hangers with my old Leatherman Wave with no issues. This is absurd. I hope the problem doesn't extend to other Leatherman models I know a lot of their new models have replaceable cutter blades and now I wondering if the same blades work for every modle. If so ALL Leatherman models manufactured from this point on could be in trouble until the company isolates the cause.

They should send out new ones for free to everyone that purchased this after they figure out what happened. I can't even believe they didn't test these out before they shipped them. That said it opens up a whole new aftermarket replacement made out of better steel for this particular purpose.

I bought it for the other tools and the Magnacut blade. I would much rather had a really heavy duty pair of scissors (Such as the ones on the Raptor) in place of the pliers for my needs. But even still this should have never passed quality control.

Update: after 3 weeks(!!!) a Leatherman representative replied to my email acknowledging the fact that there is an issue with the cutters and letting me know that they will ship replacement cutters to my address. You've already covered that the replacement work just fine (either sent free of charge from Leatherman or bought directly from them) so I would say they handled the situation acceptable. Key takeaways for them: never rush a launching of a new product and invest more resources in support.

It’s very sad and bad! The ARC should be able to cut coat hanger wire all day long. After spending five years designing and developing the ARC…. I guess they forgot to test all the componets of the tool and failed at putting the correct QC tests in place for material and final product. As I have said before…. My arc came with rust on pliers under the wire cutters, for 230 I felt scammed. All they had to do was add a little oil to it after making it. Mine was marked 07 for july

I struggled to cut my mig welding wire at the bottom of my cutters, I’ve used multiple leathermans every day to do this usually with no problems and but the cutters on the ARC would barley get through it! And it’s a lot smaller than a coat hanger wire

Just to throw it out there, my Leatherman Wave has made thousands of cuts to rebar tie wire without failure. As a riger for tower cranes, I keep it light tool wise. I also blunt cut the needle nose with an angle grinder, & completely deleted my Kline linesman pliers from my belt. Love my Leatherman Wave!💪👍

You’re the second KZbinr or third to have this issue. What’s interesting is the insert used is the same part number used on most of the Leatherman tools. It’s the same as the P4 P3, Surge wave plus etc. The plier head on the arc is also the same plier head used on the P4. It’s going to be interesting what Leatherman does.

Today, I had a lengthy and wide-ranging conversation with Leatherman. Part of the conversation was about the cutters. Leatherman said the cutters have been redesigned, and there was a bad batch (heat treatment and a flaw), but that the new design of cutters is fine. They said they are monitoring the issues and feedback, along with social media, and handling cutters on a case-by-case basis. It's called denial, transferrence, deflection, and hubris.

I just got my arc in the other day, it seems to me that the plier head is looser and is therefore causing the cutters to cross each other slightly, probably need to replace the full pliers

I wonder about the Garage 5 now ... but I suspect that this might be a batch of cutters that are having issues, not Arc in particular. I did notice that my Arc and Garage 5 cutters are a slightly different shape from my two-year-old Rebar cutters - the cutters on my Rebar have a blunter "tip" - the tip at the other end of the hard wire part of the cutter. That's pretty mind blowing. I use the old wave, before the +, before the replaceable wire cutters and I just took a look at them and still look fine. Do me a favor if you would, and do a video putting the goat tool cutters through some testing. I just ordered one, because of the ease of customizing it. Now I'm wondering if these companies are cutting so many corners to increase profits that they are charging a fortune for junk throw away products.

They need new management. This new design of cutters is a fail. Also them not having tools available for months, maybe years at a time. The bit sets, ratchet, crunch, p2, p4, ps4, style ps, etc. Just now saw the ps4 is on their retired product page. They nevered publicly stated this or did a last run like they did with oht recently. Guess they really didn't want to be on the hook for replacing those defective scissors anymore.

I get my Leatherman Arc tomorrow. I ordered it from Leatherman on the 17th and chose free standard shipping. I know what I won't be doing with my cutters! 99 percent of the time I'm using the needle nose or regular pliers. Mr. Kincaid from HVAC Budget broke his on camera too. If mine break cutting tie wire I'll be a little ticked but that's really the only material I use my cutters for besides nylon zip ties. I'm just happy your guys aren't breaking the plier jaws. The cutters can be replaced. $15 for a pair of cutters will have to come out of Leatherman's pocket. I'm still very excited about the tool not the $250 or even the Magnacut but the tool set itself.

This video really makes me regret not getting that Surge I saw on eBay a couple of weeks ago. Though I would have missed out on the small but driver, it had basically everything else and word on Reddit is it could technically be used as a hammer bot unlike the Arc/Signal.

No small bit driver but replaceable saw and file. You can use $2 of the huge price difference to buy an eyeglass screwdriver and pop that in the case. A lot easier to use than driving an itty bitty driver with a huge off-centred handle

I consider this whole plier design a fatal flaw: in order to accommodate the replaceable cutters, the plier jaws are only half as thick. The first time I applied any torque to them (not on an Arc, but on an earlier model with the same plier design), one of the jaws snapped off. I carry a Curl now because of this. BTW, I've also had two Leatherman pocket clips snap on me--maybe the same entity does the heat treating for the pocket clips and the cutters.

On reflection, it's things like this that reinforces my view on not buying newer tools & just keep using my older ones...QC has been uneven at best with these tools...that is why I have not pulled the trigger on a Wave+....if they can't get the "premium" tool right...I don't blame people for being upset...the customer pays good money for a product from a company whose rep was built on quality & reliability...the expectation is not to have problems straight out of the box...

I'm surprised there's not more reviewers complaining about the hole in the usable section of the file... why they didn't use a notch at the end of the file like on the wave is beyond me.. I use the file on my multitool at least a couple times a week... And why did they come up with differently designed bit holder with a bunch of slop... Well maybe they will get it right next time (10 years from now)

Very good points …… The play in the bit adapter is ridicules! How are folks finding that acceptable? I also don’t understand why they wasted so much space on the file with the hole! It just doesn’t make any sense! Just so one can flip open the file real quick? Leatherman should have designed in a T-shank adapter into the ARC!

Sounds like they are identical to the ones that broke..old tools don't have this issue.

@@maxlvledc I wonder if the spare cutters solve the issue of the gap at the bottom where it doesn't cut , meaning is the gap from the new cutters or from the shape of the new pliers ? Thank you for bringing that issue up btw I was excited about the Arc and now that calms me down a bit !

Wow! That is truly an epic failure. I do not know much about pliers but have found that some seem to not cut into the wire and separate. But this is actually a crack... I guess they do these specials relatively quickly and maybe design and R&D suffer a bit?

Wouldn’t it be safe to assume that whatever vendor is making the cutters for the Arc is now probably their supplier for the replacement cutters too?

Yes sir, I had mine break already, thought it was just me. Since we’re on the topic of quality, my tools are loose. One of the bolts needed to be tightened down right out of the box. The blade could be moved easily from side to side and it was not the side where the bolt was sticking out. And when you close the Arc completely, the handle with the blade moves up and down. I’m hoping mine is just a fluke because I ordered two for family members.

from my estimation the cutters at the bottom where you were having trouble, that small notch, the cutters are rounded off there and dont overlap, where previous versions they are not rounded, i just returned a new p4 because the cutters both didn't work (same issue as you show here) and the pliers binded up bad

A guy showed me a video of cutting coat hanger wire are all not made the same an of the same metal mixture,also yes it may be a hest treatment issue,but honestly I paused when I saw his video as I was about to do the same,since owning the Arc,of many things I've cut with it,no issues,so like I said it could be a combination of things, hopefully leatherman on their other batches caught this an fixed the issue ,if not I'm ordering a set of replacements for mine an plan on doing a test with my Arc and surge side by side an switch there cutters out to see the differences if any.

Bought my ARC few hours ago and CUTTERS got DAMAGED during a small nail tip cutting😭 pliers don’t properly close and open. Ordered replacement on their website. $246 + $20 for replacement😢

I wonder if it’s a side effect of minor design changes. It seems that the hard wire notch has a gap in the throat and the wire tends to be trapped on the corner of the edge so that the pressure is concentrated on a tiny spot, which fractures the hard metal. Leatherman tools’ price rise times the increased exchange rate rendered the perceived price in Korea nearly twice that of a couple of years ago. Thanks to the price wall I’ve been hesitating buying ARC. I’m afraid I’ll have to wait for the exchange rate to go down AND also for the cutter issue to be solved before I decide to buy one.

I think considering how expensive things are going, especially in the new Arc, the quality if anything should be improving! Its alot of money to spend when they are reducing the quality of the tooling
