I carried my original pat pending Wave for over twenty years and just recently switched to the Surge with the bit kit. Over the years it has saved miles of walking and climbing with having it on my hip. Loving the Surge so far, but a little bit of me missed the wave which I handed down to my son. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for an excellent comparison. I’d love to see the exchangeable blade function introduced on any upgrade of the Wave. It would also allow the scissors to move to the outside and be bigger. It would make the Wave an even more compelling option for the majority of people. Until then the Surge feels more attractive

Excellent presentation, great voice over and you did the tools justice, The Wave..imho is by far the best all round tool from an EDC point of view, small, very strong however still light enough and packed with all the essential tools that you really can use. Combined with the full bit kit and extender tool carried in an updated 4 pocket holster it's superb. For a comfortable concealed pocket carry the side clip is perfect as it holds the tool in place and keeps it located and available for deployment at all times. The way I've had mine replaced without quibble over the last 27 years due to abuse and good old hard work is testament to Leatherman's unflinching service and engineering prowess. A truly awesome tool!

TX Tool Crib Never leave the house without it! Black tactical Wave + with pocket clip for tidy concealed carry and Stainless Wave Plus+ for rough duties with a loaded 4 pocket holster complete with Fenix tac torch. Also have a very old Leatherman pancake holster with tool adapter and bits, Ticks all the boxes....proper boy scout😉
@txtoolcrib

Blue Six That sounds a lot like myself. I carry a stainless/black oxide Surge away from the job site, because frankly I think it looks sharp. I combine that with a newer Fenix UC35. On the job site I carry a regular stainless Surge that sees all kinds of abuse and just keeps right on chugging along. I have an older Fenix UC35 with all kinds of wear and tear which has never let me down, to go along with my Surge, single sleeve bit kit, and bit extender. I feel completely vulnerable whenever I reach for my hip and don’t find those tools. There are rare occasions when carrying my Surge is out of place. Whenever I am at functions where carrying a belt carried multi tool is taboo, I switch it out for a Juice S2. It doesn’t have the same level of functionality, but something is better than nothing. Honestly, my multi tool is just as important to me as my smart phone.

I owned a Wave, and sold it in favor of the Surge. While heavier, the Surge offers full-size scissors, and a removable/replaceable file and saw. I once suggested that Leatherman add the replaceable saw/file tool on a Signal like tool. I also suggested they make a tool for the office environment (no knife, decent Scissors), as that would be awesome.
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 5 жыл бұрын
My03Tundra I also like the fact that the saw/file are replaceable on the Surge. If for any reason they were to wear out, you can just order new ones. I think this combination really only works on the larger multi tools though. Because of the way that exchanger is built, it really shortens the saw/file quite a bit. In a standard duty multi tool, I think it would shorten them beyond the point of usefulness, especially the saw. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your very good in-depth review. I felt that both tools were represented very well and that you showed some of the strengths and weaknesses of both. I've been EDCing a wave since 2007 or so and feel underdressed when I'm without it. Also just purchased a used charge alx. I may have to consider a surge in the future

Derek Schmucker You’re very welcome. I really feel you can’t go wrong with either one of these multi tools. It really comes down to personal preference. The ALX is even better. I think you’ll enjoy the longer blade life of the 154 CM, it also looks a little more sleek in my opinion. Thanks for your comment.

Been a subscriber for several weeks now, but if I wasn't already, this vid would have convinced me to. A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I owned the "original" Leatherman. But alas, it disappeared shortly after passing through the spacetime continuum from passing through a black hole on the way to this galaxy LOL. Might need a surge now. I edc the wave and have one in each car. I want to put in a good word for the wave reversible eyeglass screwdriver. It is one of the best fine clean scrape pry tools around and is a good awl (pokes tiny holes in wood, metal leather etc or pilot holes (no taper) for fine wood screws). It is a great recessed o-ring lifter on flat or round applications. It cleans outside and many inside threads. And is a fine scribe. (Also much safer than a blade for cleaning under fingernails)

Great overview. I have, and love both of these tools. I agree that the Wave is a better EDC tool, but consider the Surge more as a camping tool than a tradesman's tool. When I was a low-voltage electrician, I normally carried purpose-built tools in a tool belt or bag, so I rarely felt the need to pull out my multitool. The blades and file occasionally came in pretty handy, however. My biggest peeve with both of these tools is the combination opener. It's a great can opener, but a terrible bottle opener. Victorinox makes a much better one. It's just one of the reasons I've been carrying an SAK for 40 years.

@@xl000 you don't pay anything for that. It comes with the hefty price you pay when you initially buy a leatherman. I'm sure you only have to pay for the shipping of the item. But as far as the exchange,repair. The 25 year warranty covers that. Leatherman is also very known to honor their warranty.

The Wave for me!!! I saw the 2017 Horror movie " A Quiet Place" and the father gave his daughter a Leatherman Signal at the beginning of the movie like in the first 15 minutes into it, I was like 'Hell Yeah!!' But The Wave is a Legendary tool, popular as a pair of pliers and used as much as a hammer. This tool will be forever made as a necessary tool, a household item for everyone to use. Life cannot be the same without a Leatherman. I carry mine everyday, even inside the house.

Great video! I have both and won't leave my house without one of them. Because of its size and weight, I think that the Wave is the better EDC tool, but there have been times when I was glad that I had the Surge on my belt. My only problem with the Surge is the sheath. It's horrible. I bought a leather sheath for the Wave but didn't like it. I put the Surge into it and love it. I don't consider any multitool a tradesman's tool. If you're an electrician, for example, and all you carry is a multitool, you' need to get proper tools or find a different line of work. These are designed for those times when you need to do something and don't have a real tool handy.

I have a fun fact for you. You may not know this. I love the fact any standard bit can be used. Here is why. In Canada we prefer Robertson screws and bolts. Phillips and slots end up in the garbage if we have a choice. Try one sometime and you'll know why. . The reason you Don't have them is because Henry Ford chose the either cheaper or more readily available Phillips. I can't remember which. With the standard bit choices I can use a far superior bit.
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 6 жыл бұрын
Charles Adamski_1 I don’t disagree that the Robertson is superior to the Phillips. I watched a documentary on it once. It was my understanding that the gentleman from Canada that invented that screw was trying to get it implemented during The Great War, if I’m not mistaken. The manufacturers in America, in their infinite wisdom, decided to use the Phillips head fastener design because it was invented by an American. It became a standard in the US after that. I’ll never understand why. A little side note, there is one other invention that came from Canada that surprised me when I found out. The oxygen/acetylene torch came from Canada. So y’all for that one too. We actually do use Robertson head fasteners here as well. They are mostly relegated to electrical applications. Don’t ask me why. Thanks for your comments. Hope you liked the video.

I owned an original Leatherman right after they came out and I was not impressed. Good idea but felt flimsy. Stuck with my Swiss Army knife as my pocket/pack multi tool. Pretty much forgot about Leatherman for 20 years. Been Looking for a better tool for my pack. Saw my boss pull hers out the other day and decided to check them out. Ordered a surge + bit kit and extender $162. I have to say I am impressed. This does not feel like the flimsy classic. These pliers are solid. I am already finding it very useful and has become my belt tool. One thing I wish they had left the flimsy 420 knife blades off but I always also carry my Spyderco so don’t need another knife. Bought the black one. Did a number on my hand for a few days but now nothing is coming off on my hands.

This was the first of your reviews that I watched. It, along with your Wave+ and Free P4 reviews convinced me that the Wave+ would be the upgrade of choice to suit my needs. Coming from the Sidekick (and very briefly the Wingman), the Wave+ is a solid tool and a quantum leap from the Sidekick in terms of tool selection and robustness. I found the P4 intriguing (and do like it's scissors better), but I opted for what I considered to be a bit more of a stout tool. Your review also gave me an appreciation the Surge, but for me it's a bit much to carry for my usage, the Wave+ being more on par with the size and weight of the Sidekick. Thanks.

I think the Wave/Charge and Swisstool Spirit lines would be most recommended multi tools for most people. The only reason to jump to a Surge/ST300/Swisstool is if you are working in construction/fabrication or you want something a little more robust for camping/bushcrafting. Hand size can also play a role into whether or not you choose to go with the larger tools. My hope is that someday they come out with multi tools that are sized right in between the size of the Wave and Surge. I think that size would appeal to a lot of people.

I’m not the aficionado you are, but I see your point. I might have been willing to go a bit larger depending on the tool selection. Nonetheless, I expect the Wave+ to serve my needs well.

Excellent video comparison! 👍...Surge still my choice of a multitool, maybe a bit heavy for the pocket, that's why I always carry it in the sheath and never use the pocket clip, but beside that, the clip fits too loose and moves sideways making it very difficult to clip the tool on your pocket using just one hand while holding something else with the other, almost lost my Surge because of that exact problem. According to Leatherman, is an intentional bit of wiggle in the design of the clip in case it gets caught on something there would be a little bit of “give” rather than immediately breaking off and ruining the clip. Well, for whatever reason, still useless to me.

Tekmat Sharp Thank you. I never tried using the pocket clip on the Surge. I have always belt carried my Leatherman tools, well the larger ones anyway. There are those rare occasions when I go out for dinner and don’t carry my Surge. Inevitably, I will reach for my Surge and immediately go into panic mode because it isn’t on my hip. I have learned to combat that by carrying the Leatherman Juice S2. Thank for your comments.

Love the surge.. I dont care if I look like I have a 5 pound wrench in my belt or pocket but it has way more tools and looks less of a toy. The only con that I have found with the surge is that it tends to loosen itself quickly. But its still the best from Leatherman including its warranty.. It is clearly a fine example of quality and service from a product that it is USA made.

Hey I would like to buy a surge, of course I checked a lot of reviews from a lot of websites one of those was Amazon and I found some really negative reviews with photos of the surge rusty or even broken (it was a full priced one 169€ ), but every other single website says that it's very durable and I don't know what to do, does Amazon simply sell fake garbage??? Can anyone that actually owns or owned the knife give me advice plz????
@baileyhatfield4273
@baileyhatfield4273 3 жыл бұрын
If Amazon is selling them for Full price...just go to Leatherman itself. No point of having some second hand possible problem child knife for the same cost. I just ordered a Wave + right from Leatherman (Canada) and its coming, looks like a really nice multi tool plenty of reviews on them. Things break on these knifes if you misuse or abuse them, its gonna happen to anything. They have a 25 yr warranty and i think it should cover a bunch. Rust would be a problem of cleaning it poorly or leaving it out in bad weather for long periods of time

Thank you very much. I set up an overhead rig using 2x4 lumber and 1/2" pipe fittings for the overhead camera work. It is kind of a cheap setup, but seems to work well. I have a MeFoto phone mount and shoot with an iPhone X with an external mic for all the table top videos. I use a Sony Handycam camcorder for other videos with a Rode external mic for the rest. I plan on doing a video for how I set up my table top shots later. I spent about $100 on the setup for the table top shot, excluding the phone of course.

@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 4 жыл бұрын
Well thank you, and thank you for watching. I believe that the blade exchanger from the Surge uses a slightly larger pin size than the Wave+. To install it, I think you would need to make a bushing for it to operate correctly. Also, because the Wave+ is a bit shorter, the saw/file will not fold up properly and would have to be carried separately. Hope this helps.

I tried carrying the Raptors for a while along with my Surge, the combination just got to be too heavy. Now I love the Raptors, but they got relegated to the storage compartment of my driver's side door. I have actually been carrying the Swisstool away from work because I want to give an honest review on my experiences with it. It has not been easy for me to acclimate to. I have carried the Surge for 12 years now. Not having quick access to the knife blades definitely takes an adjustment period. Thanks for watching.

A have surge and wave and surge is monster. It is inpossible to brake. But when it came to EDC wave is best. Surge is too heavy for normal use. If you really need monster buy surge, but if you need tool to fix stuff in house and more fine work surge is too heavy and screwing little screws just tired up hands and it's not comfortable like wave.

@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 5 жыл бұрын
Myles Green First of all, thank you. The Surge May be a bit large for you. I have fairly large hands and it is definitely a handful. I think it is the most capable multi tool in production right now, but the Wave is also an excellent multi tool. Sometimes, it is about what fits you best. I would recommend the Wave, Charge series, Victorinox Spirit series, and Rebar for butterfly opening multi tools. Even some of Gerber tools, though they are not really my style, are pretty capable as well. The beauty is, there are options. It is up to you to decide what tool set works for you and what you are willing to compromise on. Best of luck.

I'm from and live on a small island of the coast of Ireland loving here now after having spent years and I mean years living and working in England over there I carried a leatherman kick the two main reasons was the blade on the kick is under 3 inches that makes it legal and it doesn't lock in England any knife that is either over 3 inches and or locks is illegal I love that kick it's been a great and handy tool for me for years as I worked in construction but now living here on the island I think the surge would be better for my everyday needs but the prices here are extortionist I could buy a good cordless power drill for the price of a surge just out of curiosity how much do they cost in the states .
