This is great information and perfect timing too. I know people get stuck with being loyal to a company but I've personally seen companies letting people go with no hesitation at all. Thanks for putting this out 👍

I more that doubled my pay for essentially the same job in 2021 by switching companies twice! Don’t be afraid to make moves!

I left a long term job in 2019 and more than doubled my salary since then. Even got laid off in 2020 at the start of Covid and thought I had to take a pay cut but no, a tech company hired me for more than I had been making. The old employer didn’t want to promote me after years of hard work and innovation. You’re absolutely right, it’s better to move on.

Unfortunately, people usually don’t get what they are worth until a company is buying your skills on the open market. If you have grown significantly in your current role, your company will most likely see you as a bargain. Many people grow comfortable in their career and are scared to make a move; executives know this and are willing to play chicken with any given employee that is thinking about leaving. Facing the open market will always bring more options that waiting around at your current company.

wha are the best non-engineering roles that pay very well in tech? Currently in the finance department but want to transition to more technical role

I say try looking into business analyst/consultant roles. They are more on the documentation/business admin side but there are some opportunities to be more involved in tech

Do you think the Stock Options in startups with Cliff Vesting (25 % each year) is a just a stick or a carrot to hold people longer while paying them nuts, promoting Hyped mass returns on their options ?

Great info. What if you got an offer from another company and you current one is willing to match it aaaand you’d like to stay? Best case scenario or take the offer and leave?

what is the absolute minimum rate you would consider leaving to a competitor? 10k or more is that a good range?
@JohnMarty-uncommon3 жыл бұрын
10-20% as a rule of thumb on the low side. Its important to know how much you would get paid with a promo at your current employer and how long that’s gonna take - this will give you a better measure of what a good number to move would be. For example, if you are far away from promo then 10%-15% would be a justifiable move. If you are close to a promo that’s gonna pay you 20% more internally then the move would have to account for something higher than what the promo would be.

I'm currently at an operations management role in amazon and looking to pivot into a corporate program/product management position, any tips or advice?

Hi John, what do you suggest if you’re in a Sr. PgM role at Amazon now? My issues is Im in Canada and our pay scales dont match what USA pays. Ive been promoted 3 times in the last 4 yrs so the higher you go in level the harder it is..leave or aim for an outside offer to see if they match. Feeling torn to leave or to go to another FAANG..

Hey - I just helped a woman land an L6 Amazon senior program manager role for $300k in the US. I encouraged her at the same time to keep interviewing and she landed a $375k written offer at Oracle. So that’s the going rate range...
