When I finished Mass Effect 3, I felt as though as whole chunk of my life had ended. Mass Effect wasn't just a video game series for me, it was home. The Citadel, Omega, Earth, they all felt like second homes to me. Garrus, Tali, Liara, Jack, Thane, Samara, Miranda, Javik, and all the others have taught me so much and were like friends I have known for a very long time. I laughed, gasped, got angry, loved, and cried so much at this game. Now it's over, and I feel so alone. Thank you, Bioware.

Makes me think of the my Colonist/Ruthless Sentinel femshep's story ME1: Very renegade and anti-Batarian. Pushes everyone away due to the trauma of Mindoir and the guilt from Torfan but starts to let her guard down after meeting Liara and romancing her. Kills Balak in Bring Down the sky DLC. Keeps Wrex alive. Sacrifices Kaiden on Virmire. Saves the Council. Chose Anderson as councillor. ME2: Still mostly renegade, but shades of paragon start to appear. Distrusts both the Alliance and Cerberus. Stays faithful to Liara. Destroys Collector base. Destroys the Alpha relay without warning the nearby Batarian colony in Arrival DLC. ME3: Major U-turn and becomes more paragon than renegade and less racist towards Batarians due to the war wih the Reapers. Renews romance with Liara. Cures the genophage. Secures peace with Geth and Quarians. Destroys the Reapers and redeems herself for her past misdeeds.

Might mean little to people...but the ending to ME3 for me, was pretty straight on and awesome. No matter what choices in life you make, how good you are, how much you plan and how much you strive to do the right/wrong thing...it can all come down to a decision that has no merit on the previous choices. Maybe a lame cop out, but thats what i got when i finished the game, WITHOUT the DLCs. And it stung but i loved it, and its one of my favorite endings, because it hurt so much. Not because i felt betrayed by Bioware, or EA, or anyone. Because it mattered to me and i saw it that way. My choices mattered TO ME. But I'm just one person on the grand scale of things, but so long as they mattered to me, i felt right with my decision in the end. Seen alot of hate, and this music is just awesome period. But i really havnt seen this argument anywhere. The developers did make a mistake, they over promised, they got screwed by EA, they..blah blah blah. It's still a great ending. If you want to believe Indoctrination Theory as well, more power to ya! But remember that we got a good story and a ending that was great. One that you gotta remember is a story about a hero. It makes sense that after all the sacrifice, trouble, pain, anguish, and suffering, he does his job and gets to rest finally. Not because you made a choice in the past, or because you liked red over blue...but because ultimetly it came down to your belief of what an outcome of that would be. ALOT of decision in life are that way despite not seeming like it at first. Option A or option B..
@orielsy4 жыл бұрын
"No matter what choices in life you make, how good you are, how much you plan and how much you strive to do the right/wrong thing...it can all come down to a decision that has no merit on the previous choices." The problem with this is, it's NOT COMPLETELY TRUE. Yes we aren't in full control you are right about that but outcomes can't be identical if one goes through life making different choices than another individual. There may be some exceptions but they won't be the norm. For a series that emphasized different outcomes depending on choices to end with the ending that ME3 gave us was a slap in the face. A huge let down.
@chaff54 жыл бұрын
I liked the way it ended originally. I'm a firm believer that Indoctrination Theory was what they were trying to do and it just flew over everyone's head. Then they caved to the backlash. But the truth is, like you said, sometimes the choice boils down to what's right in front of you and has nothing to do with everything you've done before. Throughout the game, we were given choices and paths that allowed us to make everyone happy or get a "perfect" outcome but the fate of the galaxy hardly garners that kind of leeway. Sometimes, there is actually only one right answer. And more often than not, it's a choice you don't like.

@@orielsy As i really like Nathan Hannibal's answer ill give you something to consider: It was all about the journey. All those choices and sacrifices mattered ... to you, the player! It made the way you got to the end different from how it could have been with different choices. But the end-goal, the destination stayed the same all the time and even gave several options too. Even by RPG standards thats more than most games allow. Lets talk a bit more metaphysical: the universe might seem like it revolves around you, but only because the game presents everything from 'your' perspective. GameDevs too easily give into temptation to make things 'more awesome' for the player just because they can, disregarding the whole universe they generated. Millions upon millions of imaginary people played their roles in this story. That Shepard had such hughe influence is already the best sign of it just being a game. A melody can't be just changed significantly by one voice when the choir goes on in a determined way. Or the Avengers: Endgame -way: think of it as if there had been countless ways to end this, though non but the ways that led to Shepard facing the choices he had in the end were the ones that led to a real victory over the Reapers. Tony needed to die in the end to achieve secure and stable victory. Shepard was MEs Tony Stark.
@NotTheCIA19614 жыл бұрын
I've never understood the hate for the ending of the game. I could see it being a letdown without the extended cut simply because it doesn't give quite enough closure to the characters you've spent 3 games interacting with and caring about, but as for the story ending... I loved it. It's a war over the universe, something like that isn't going to have a happy ending. We get far too many unrealistically happy endings in media nowadays, and maybe I'm just emotionally masochistic but I love a realistically painful ending. Shepard is a man of means, and for a lot of things he is able to punch well above his weight, but he's still only one person. But when it comes to what he was dealing with at the end of ME3 - there comes a point where you can't handle everything in a perfect way anymore.
@Getrefreshed12 жыл бұрын
I think the ending was perfect! But what I want to say is that Bioware already started some kind of poll; getting ideas from the fanbase asking them what they/we wanna have in ME 4. So there will another one for sure and they still listen to the players. ;)

My biggest issue with the ME endings wasn't the fact that there was no true "happy" ending (unless you count high EMS destroy) but the fact that there is a complete lack of closure. If Bioware had given players everything they all wanted in an ending to ME3, would any of us have truly been happy with it? Think on that for a moment; it is utterly impossible to make everyone happy. Human desires conflict with one another constantly, and minds change just as fast as the winds. The writers would create the "ultimate ending" based on what players submitted to them, and it would probably be a monstrous mess that would be poorly received. The irony of the whole situation is that it is the fault of the players themselves for that piss-poor ending. There is another solution; you can be happy with the ending they gave us. Mass Effect was never meant to be more than a trilogy; it was all about the Reapers and the galaxy's reaction(s) to them, and finally the struggle to survive against such near-godlike beings. Now, they're gone... there's nothing left aside from the races of the galaxy that pose a threat to each other. Live with the ending we got, whether it made you cry, happy, or mad, and drive on to the next IP that grips you emotionally.

@HanithSVK2 жыл бұрын
Okay, first of, most of the ME3 is work of an art. Issues started to mount up in last 20 or so minutes of the gameplay. Reasoning of the "Catalyst" is weak at best, totally illogical at worst. And slideshow ending with commetary didn't help much either. We played 3 games, untold number of hours spent in ME world and what happens at the end? I was expecting at least some "military decoration" for Shephard if lives or at least funeral if not. What we have now? Three colored endings, which are mostly identical(Citadel firing colored beam through relay) and that's it? And, of course, i cannot forget, Normandy crew SOMEHOW knew that Anderson is dead(but there was no way they could know that, because Anderson managed to get onto Citadel), BUT one of them also knew that Shephard survived... Wtf? I am not saying that the ending ruined whole trilogy, but this was truly horrific. That ending IS bad. But not because of what it tried to show, but because HOW they chose to show it. Two-three monts of additional work and we would never have this conversation. But no, instead they decided to force rush it, and fanbase reacted exactly how Bioware deserved.

I understand everyone was pissed off at the original ending. But the truth of every hero's story is sacrifice. And here, Shepard isn't just sacrificing himself, he is sacrificing the future he could have had with anyone. But that is what life is. Everything has an ending and every hero has to die, including you - the player. This game kind of ends with a question, how are you going to live your life now that you know even the hero of the story has to die?

Mass effect needs to be made into a movie or something. More people need to know about it. The universe is so much more interesting than that of star wars, star trek or any of that other stuff (no hate). I feel like a lot of people would appreciate it. Bioware has created something special here and it shouldn't be confined to one form of media. Yeah i know there are some comics and shit and an animated shortfilm of sorts but man does this trilogy deserve more. Movies or a tv series could explain so many things lorewise and depict past events that we weren't around to witness in the trilogy. This franchise has so much potential... please don't let it go to waste...
@PhoenixT703 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but then the whole feel of Mass Effect would be lost. The point is that it's _your_ story. Maybe you always end in the same place, but it's how you get there that matters, the choices you make and have to live with on your journey to that endgame. If you constrain that to the medium of a film... that's gone. ME is one of the few IPs that should largely stay a video game, because other mediums take away that feeling of connection. You're not playing as your Shepard; you _are_ your Shepard.

Even more people hating ME3 endings... I like that. Not many people comprehend what those endings represent, what Illusive man represents, what Anderson represents. they just take into mind what they see on the screen. I played through all the series and I wasn't dissapointed at all. Because I understood.

@SC2LastMarine10 жыл бұрын
It sounds more like you dont comprehend why people were angry. There were 16 endings promised but they only delivered 4. Also the endings bioware gave had a few plot holes and they really do fall short of the wow factor mass effect 1 and 2 gave. This is why a lot of fans subscribe to the indoctrination theory. Its pretty bad when fans make a better ending than the creators.

This music, this game, everything reminded me how important are friends in your life and doesn't matter where they came from. Talking with these characters was so realistic and so was seeing them dying.Finishing the game after 5 years was like diyng and losing alot of your friends, seeing how they do without you in EC. Bioware gave me more than RPG,amazing shooting.It gave me FRIENDS that I treat like real ones. And that's one of many reasons I cried ...
@jadenaddams367410 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason that everyone hated all the Mass Effect endings was that there was really no "Happy" one. Because that's never how the real world works, children. There are always costs to pay for peace. People die, friends die, you die. And it SUCKS. All you can do is stick to what you believe in, make your choice, and hope that it's the one that worked to make things better. Which, in a way, is how all of the endings applied to Shepard no matter which path you took. By the end of the game, he was worn out, beaten down, tired. But still had to make a choice. And his choice was what became the Mass Effect.
@usaa30010 жыл бұрын
Yeah, It's pretty childish how everybody rips on the ending. You knew it was going to happen. This isn't Halo were the omnipotent being wins every time. Shepard is a man. An extraordinary man, but just a man. The ending to me was perfect. With the exception that I'm not sure how the fleets could rally again with the relays destroyed.
@nisteven10 жыл бұрын
Sorry but your wrong, if they did the ending in a different way, but with shepard dying and with all the crew dying as well. I would not have mind at all. The reason people are piss off, is because it ruin the entire concept of what mass effect was about. Before the very first ME even came out, the biggest selling point the devs was trying to push was that your decisions will have a long lasting effect and will change the universe and future events. Then before me3 came out they said if you truly want your own unique ending then you need me1-2 and base on all of what you did in both will change how me3 ends. Basically one of the founding pillars of the game was personal choice and how it effects the gameplay later on. What you did in me1 completely changes your exp in me2 and me1-2 what you did completely changes your exp in me3 as well. That is until the end, the end of me3 broke it. The quarin home world or krogan home world was a perfect example of this in me3. Both played out way different base on what choices youve made in the past. Then the ending comes around and no matter your choices throughout the 3 games, it pick between these endings. P.S. sorry for my bad English.

***** Exactly, it would be better if it only had one, bad ending. The ilussion of choice didn't do it any good.

***** Most of what you said was right, but one thing. You said the option to put both syth and orga into each being was to make everything the same. This is wrong, they took the best of both and put them together. The very best thing about organic is the diversity. So just because Orga now have Syth in it, does not mean it all the same now. I mean all Orga are made of organic materiel and yet we not all the same. So no it does not get ride of diversity, every species still have there own genetic code and within ever species there still diversity. I know this is jsut nitpicking, but still.

@lonewanderer792611 жыл бұрын
EA/BioWare should do a reboot only this time, a better ending for ME3 that could carry PROPERLY into ME4 and beyond with Shepard as the main character. I would have loved to see how Shepard and the crew of the Normandy would transition into a post-reaper galaxy and what new conflicts would arise from my decisions made throughout the first 3 games. Like, did the Krogan evolve into a better society because of Eve and Wrex? Did the Rachni ever become a threat to the galaxy once more? Would the Batarians ever rejoin Citadel society? And did the Quarians ever adapt to the point where they didn't need environmental suits anymore and could interact more with the galactic community? These are questions I would like to face as my Shepard, not some wimpy replacement that EA montreal wants to force on us. I bet the next main character will have a French accent.

After the Blight in Dragon Age is ended, what happened in DA2 seem boring to me, especially without the Grey Wardens. After defeating the greatest enemy ever known to the universe, what could possibly be more exciting?
@Thorcsf11 жыл бұрын
The answers to these questions are left to be wondered by the players. There are a lot of movies that ends like that. If they were to keep answering all the "would-be's" and "could-be's" there would never be an ending, the Mass Effect trilogy would be dragged into a boring series with no objective ending, and would spoil an amazing objective story that has an epic ending and was made to be a trilogy since the beginning. Besides, the ending of the game doesn't leave room for a sequel; it (with Extended Cut DLC) has an epic conclusion! It was the best ending in a game that I've ever played in my life! So epic and emotional that it even made me drop some (a lot actually) tears, after playing this trilogy for such a long time. And like colodius said, after beating the greatest enemy ever known to the galaxy, what could possibly be more exciting than that? It'd be like the example he used of DA2.

colodius Umm, let's see, war between the followers of the Creator and Andraste and the Qunari, the war between the Mages and the Chantry and their Templars, conflicts between the races of elves and men, the resurgence of the Darkspawn, the rise of another arch-demon, the list goes on and on. The lore behind Dragon Age could yield more and more storylines, much like Mass Effect's does. All it takes is creative writers with good imaginations. That's the problem with game development today. You've got programmers and artists out the wazoo, but there are very few people with creative vision to guide them and give them ideas to build games upon. Hell, EA should hire me, I've got tons of ideas that could carry into Mass Effect 4 and beyond.

I've said it often and i stand by it: the (extended) ending is perfect! ME didn't 'deserve' a happily-ever-after-ending because it would have made all those sacrifices along the way seem just not as dire, not as desperate. Isolating Shepard in the end after loading the situation emotionally by seeing Shepards mentor die was the best option to avoid a fuckton of unnecessary, unbeliveable, unrealistic (in-universe-wise) and impossible to to orchestrate - with the ammount of choices and possibilities leading up to the finale - ending-variants. Its about the journey, how you get to those endings. You are the commander, you plot your course, but with as far reaching consequences as this all includes, you don't change the mission objective, the destination, it's not within your power. If you complain about how 'all the descisions don't matter in the end' then i don't know why you played that game in the first place. Even for RPG standards you get a lot more choices to how to end the game than in most other games, and if you didn't notice how your choices changed the way how you got to the end in the first place you probably wouldn't really appreciate more ending-options either.

The ending did not really seem complete to me. Something felt like it was missing. Maybe it is because I felt the AIs logic was rather flawed for being around as long as it has been. The endings themselves also just seem flawed. Truth be told. The lack of the underlining theme I noticed throughout my personal experiences with the games might be what I was noticing...... Something just does not sit right though. All the endings sound like the stories I heard after the end of The Great War(World War I, WWI)..... " it is never going to happen again" From my observations in life and from the theme presented from the games themselves, knowledge does not promote peace. understanding does not promote peace. Choosing to perform certain actions will promote peace. Think of it this way too. A killer can know about you. A killer can understand you and why you choose to do things. A killer can then still decide to kill you because that is what they choose to do. With that in mind lets look at the synthesis ending. You have now brought fire to the people. They now understand. You also just gave every criminal and illusive man want a be the ability to do what they want even better. i am not even going to get into the reapers. They all can do this because you did not eliminate the ability to choose. Now in the control ending you also did not eliminate the ability to choose. not every one will bow to god Shepard. Hell Shepard would not bow to god Shepard. Some one will try to control or destroy the reapers again. Depending on whether it is a few people or a civilization god shepard will then need to make a choice about what to do with them which in all cases could lead to war again. All because of some one making a choice Destroy follows the same pattern. You know some one is studying the remains of the reapers. Some one is going to do something that at the time seemed 'harmless" or maybe even intentional. It would go down hill from there. It just seems to me that no matter what choice you make, some one will make a choice that causes chaos again. The ideal happy endings while nice seem flawed because of this. I then am left with feeling of what was the point then? I know each of the three endings saved a lot of lives, but the game itself did provide to me a feeling of importance to it. i actually felt like I was on a game show to be honest. Some thing just feels like it is missing still..... It is not that I need a clear cut ending that finishes the trilogy... I would greatly enjoy endings that have vastly different outcomes. I just do not get real a sense of peace like the story of the characters is done from the endings. Maybe I just need another ending to contrast with the original three to give them more meaning to me.... I don't know..... Thanks to any one brave enough to read this.... sorry I meant well...

Shepard had no idea what that glowing red component was as he approached, but he raised his pistol towards it all the same. All he had to do was squeeze the trigger, and the nightmare would end. The Reapers would be no more and his struggle would finally end. Not just the Reapers though. All synthetic life. The Geth. EDI. Himself… Harbinger’s attack broke his body. The Illusive Man drained what strength he had left. And as prepared as he always was to die for this, he was no longer sure he still could. “The mission comes first, Commander.” He heard Kaiden’s voice, as if his old lieutenant was right beside him. “It’s the right thing to do, and you know it.” Feeling his resolve return, Shepard pulled the trigger. BLAM nothing happened. He readied another shot. “Had to be you.” Mordin murmured. “Someone else might have gotten it wrong.” BLAM “Kalahira is proud of you, Shepard.” Thane told him. “And so am I.” BLAM “Galactic consensus achieved.” Legion droned. “Shepard-Commander directive: completed. Keelah Selai.” BLAM As red energy flowed from the Citadel into the Crucible, Shepard finally allowed himself to rest. Whatever happened from this point, he had finally won. He could rest now. And he wouldn’t be alone.

Imagine the possibilities, though. With or without this exact series. Mass Effect IS a universe. You could make an entire video game system filled with games only related to Mass Effect. Forza Effect, racing various cars on Illium, the Citadel. Grand Theft Auto: Omega. Or something to that effect, a sandbox, free-roam game of mischief where you could create a character from existing races and do whatever. Another RPG based off a non-linear story about Justicars.It's endless, I love it all.
