Abdullah, the founder of LightUponLight and VerseByVerseQuran discusses why he left Islam after promoting it for 15 years. I was Sunni last 15 years.
I grew up Ismaili, my mom is Sunni dad Ismaili. Growing up in Canada in a public school, I was invited by a friend to join them after school for prayers. Being Ismaili, I didn’t pray Namaaz (the sunni form of the prayer), but I had done it before at my uncle’s house a couple of times when he forced me to pray, and felt comfortable enough, so I joined them.
I asked my dad if it was okay, who told me it didn’t matter how I prayed to God, it was fine. So I started praying with them daily. I also started going for juma (the friday prayer), and eventually started reading the Quran. I really liked it and felt that this is what God wants from me. When I read the Quran it made perfect sense and eventually I started to feel that Sunnism was more correct. It felt like it was unadultered and pure compared to Ismailism which felt modern and empty.
So as time went by, over the next year (still in highschool) or so I started attending sunni lectures organised by the young muslim / muslim student associations here and eventually after studying the Quran I came to the conclusion that Ismailism is a religion based on shirk and that praying to Aga Khan is an unforgivable sin.
Thus I left Ismailism and became officially Sunni. My younger brother followed me about a year later. He is still Sunni Muslim to this day.
When I was in high school, I found Islam. A friend offered me the Quran to read and I was amazed at how I found God’s message to me and how he wanted me to live my life. I read the entire book cover to cover in English, and proceeded to read Sahih Bukhari cover to cover (summarized edition). For many years I was still Ismaili, but I would attend conventions like ISNA Canada and also go to local Young Muslim events such as Suhaib Webb’s “Zina The Disease with 1000 Faces.” After some time I decided Ismailism was a perversion of the true message of Islam and I started to identify myself as a Sunni Muslim, around the age of 16 to 18. You can read this short summary that I wrote on why I left Ismailism to become Sunni (I wrote it many many years ago).
When I became (Sunni) Muslim, I followed Islam as much as possible to the best of my ability. This meant that even though I was leaving home for the first time and living on university campus, I had to avoid all the fun that my friends around me were having with girls and alcohol. I completely abstained from these vices.
During this time I started the web site Light Upon Light as I found there were not enough Islamic videos for people to watch for free. I even used to go and tape some of the events at the conferences and masjids myself. I have over 4 million downloads on this site.
As well, I was very much involved with Sh. Yusuf Estes and his Share Islam family of sites, providing technical support and advice for keeping his servers running smoothly, backups, administration, and so on. Some of his sites are Islam News Room, QTafsir.com, ReciteQuran.com, and many more. This was done on a volunteer basis.
I also worked with Eddy (The Deen Show) and Murad from IslamicTube on a daily basis. Eddy cried when he heard I left Islam and we talked about it a few times but it is what it is.
I also ran the site VerseByVerseQuran.com (now shut down) which was something I poured many years of work into and thousands of dollars. I was very sad to shut it down. It was serving mp3s composed of individual verses of the Quran (6236 verses in each recitation, and there was tons of recitations) , with around 1000+ simultaneously downloading at any given time going up to 2500+ simultaneous downloads in Ramadan. The Quran mp3s were used to develop hundreds of apps including recitequran.com, tanzil.net, mobile Quran apps etc. See the full list here) and I never charged money to anyone who wanted to use it. It was always free of charge. And I worked with Mahmoud Hammam (Custodian of quran.ksu.edu.sa) on VerseByVerseQuran project and both of them will tell you I am truthful in that I did not ask for anything in return for what I did for them.
I don’t mention these things to gloat or show off, but to show that I was devoted to Islam and I truly believed in it with all my heart. Since most of you don’t know me, I only state this to make my story seem more personal and more real, and to show that I was a person who wanted to live and die for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa’ta’Ala. Also, I’ve had a lot of people tell me the most ridiculous thing - “oh you were never really Muslim anyway.” so I thought I would put this part to make it look more realistic and personable.

There you will find the answer "You can hate sometimes things but it can be good for you" Also you find in chapter 67 of the Quran that life is a test. God just can't be all good and all-powerful at the same time given the state of our world, and if any religion claims this I will automatically be sure it's wrong. Even though it's extremely unlikely that an all-powerful being that created us exists, I can't be 100% sure that it doesn't. What I can be sure about, though, is that religions that most humans believe in at the moment are false, and after thousands of years, they will be remembered as myths just like all the other religions humans came up with throughout history.

I agree that there are a lot of wrong forms of christianism but if you read the book of Galatians in the bible what God really wants from us is that we should love each other this is the only manner anybody can love God. Yes, the only way for anybody to love God is by loving his brother, If we say that we love God and we can't love our brother then our love isn't the real love. Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the whole bible but the problem is a lot of us are entangled with so many other things and instead of loving each other, we are robbing and killing and doing the most horrible thing to each other. But, whether you believe or not, will come a time that God is going to intervene, the time has not yet come.. He is allowing us to show ourselves either approved or not. We were supposed to be adults by now but many of us still behaving like little kids. Have a great day brother. If you have any doubt about God, I know that you must have a situation that only you and God know. Ask God for a proof and see for yourself. God is the life you and I have, He never left us, If He leave you or I, we are dead. There's nothing alive out of God, only in God things have life.

@AP 309 I'm half Sindhi Pakistan, I never disliked India and after studying history and leaving islam I believe the partition of India was merely a sham instigated by the British and that Pakistan and India are essentially the same countries. Regardless the population of Sindh before the partition was a mere 71% muslim and I believe Sindh would've done better as a part of India. Unfortunately there are a few Punjabi people that discriminate Sindhis too.

When I started learning and hearing about ex-Muslims not too long before leaving Islam, this was one of the first videos about ex-Muslims that I came across. At the time, I was just so baffled at the fact that not only were there were Muslims who left Islam, but identified themselves as ex-Muslims and made themselves known on the internet. I just couldn’t fathom why such people would dare do such a thing. But after leaving Islam, I now understand why ex-Muslims publicly speak out about their apostasy. Aside from that we now have the ability to look at DNA in extreme detail and by compiling a database across the human race scientists can learn things like genetic ethnicity areas have, common ancestors and when certain groups moved to certain areas. To begin with as we are taught that Allah created adam and hawa and asked them to stay in jannah and not to eat from one particular fruit/plant but shaitan convinced them to eat it. My question is how did Shaitan end up in heaven when he was thrown out of heavens when he dint bow down to adam. Also lets say adam n hawa ate the fruit and then Allah was so merciful that he forgave them then why are we all on earth suffering because of their sin. how is that fair??...why is this a test for all of because one person decided to eat a fruit which he/she was forbidden to eat. one more thing which always bothered me how in Ramadan the number of fasting in diff continents is so different. how is that fair someone in pak/india or middleast is fasting for 12-14 hrs whereas in europe in summers muslims need to fast 20+ hours...if allah was really so aware of all then he should have made diff rules for fasting in diff part of the world. there are some places on earth where sun doesn't set...what about muslims living there? why is there no surah or hadith about this ?? because in 7th century there was no awareness about these things. also what about laitulqadr night..where allah comes down to lowest sky and listen to ur duas. did u ever wonder lailutqadr falls on diff nights in diff countries...so how does that work out for allah...does he come down in uae/saudi one night and then india/pakistan next night?

I left Islam because, well, basically everything in Islam seemed ridiculous. Hate, sexism, fairy tales in general. I'm also gay which made it much easier. I asked myself, how can I feel this way? How can anyone punish me like this? What kind of fucking "test" this could be? And, then I realized, I'm not being punished, I just am who I am. Islamic world needs knowledge, and most importantly, peace and prosperity. I think atheism comes naturally when you have nothing to worry about, when you're a part of progressive society. Right now, there's so much blood among Muslims and others, and in those moments only religion helps as a sign of hope or for some people, boost of hate. Than i started watching debunking videos and video responses to non Muslims it become more clear that there are to many inconsistencies. I have a Quranic translation (I know that not all words can be translated with ease to english). Also I read about islamic history and started reading the hadiths and quran again but in English and its frightening. All religion claim to be true. Its all if not mostly depends the place and the family you are born into.

Also you need to realise that that the time of the prophet people didn't even know what was beyond the skies so how was the prophet supposed to explain to his sahaba things and which have been discovered 1400 years after its a stupid argument to make. @@yakz9885 Well, Yes i think that verse is open to interpretation. Its not clear what the quran is actually saying. Yes by the time of Mohammad we did know many things about the skies. The ancient greeks as well as ancient Arabic astronomers taught us many things about the stars. However The sun is not in orbit so your holy text is wrong. We orbit the sun. The sun does not orbit. So each floats in its orbit is wrong. Life being dependent on many factors does not prove islam or any religion for that matter. 80 years? Thats because of science and modern medicine. Before that most people died in their 30's and often due to their teeth. The reason we can live until 80 is due to science and medicine not religion.

You can't fathom the concept of God being in a creation of God because you were brought up like this. And I respect your belief.
