Many religions use the threat of hell to scare believers into submitting. Does the idea of hell make sense? Would a merciful God truly throw most of humanity into hell, forever for simply rejecting him? @Benjamin Park Although I can relate your valid question, to my understanding both suffering and happiness has to be treated equally by oneself, stay balanced and undeterred from the goal of salvation. I think this thought process may have contributed to empathy and missionaries who are well organised find a fertile ground for converting the under privileged to Christianity. Since Hindus are not with unified approach and have multiple philosophical thoughts of spiritual gurus, this is not given importance. It is rather considered by Hindus as once own spiritual journey depending upon their quest/ interest and seriousness for salvation.

In my online discussion with a Muslim, we got into this subject of hellfire. I asked if Allah would fry in hellfire those who in China, or the outback of Australia who had never heard of Allah. He said that they would be spared. I then asked about those who examined the evidence for Allah and used logic and rational thought and were therefore skeptical. I stressed that Allah himself had not provided adequate evidence for these people to believe and so Allah was actually responsible for their disbelief. He gave the standard answer that Allah knows best. There is a hypothetical question that goes like this: You are walking down the street and you come along a group of people that are standing around a tree. A member of the group tells you that there is an invisible, silent but all-powerful creature in the tree, a creature that only the leader of the group can communicate with. Should you believe there is an invisible, silent, all-powerful creature in the tree? Good to find you here as well :D trust me you will be more confused if you listen to this dude, Islam explicitly states that ALLAH will never punish a soul unless the message clearly got to them( this is a verse in the Quran) and you will find consensus within the scholars that even if a person dies without knowing a thing ALLAH will make sure the message reaches them even if it is after death, ALLAH knows what is in the heart of a person, the scholars even said that if someone received the message distorted ALLAH will not punish them, all your questions are answered but if you stay away from channels like that and actually investigate it on your own. Thus whoever attaches attributes to God recognizes His like, and who recognizes His like regards Him two, and who regards Him two recognizes parts for Him, and who recognizes parts for Him mistook Him, and who mistook Him pointed at Him, and who pointed at Him admitted limitations for Him, and who admitted limitations for Him numbered Him; Whoever said 'in what is He?' held that he is contained, and whoever said 'on what is He held?" He is not on something else. He is a being but not through the phenomenon of coming into being; He exists but not from non-existence; He is with everything but not in physical nearness; He is different from everything but not in physical separation; He acts without connotation of movements and instruments; He sees even when there is none to be looked at from among His creation; He is only One, such that there is non whom he may keep company or whom He may miss in his absence. Holy Qur'an 41:53 - "We will show them our signs in the universe and in their own selves until it becomes manifest to them that this is the truth."

Excellent framing of the argument. This is the very issue that so plagued me in earlier years, the struggle which finally propelled me out of the church in which I was raised and into a search something that actually made sense. Hi Abdullah, Could you do a video explaining what exactly happens in Islamic theology to Muslim women after death. My understanding is that the majority of women will go to hell regardless whether they believe in Allah or not. Ref [Sahih Bukhari.Book:6 Hadith:301]. The scholars use the word "believers" to imply that both men and women go to heaven equally. However, "believers" could very well mean just men. The islamic scriptures are explicit when it comes to describing rewards for men. However, the rewards for women are not that clear to me. I understand that the Islamic women, that do end up going to jennah, are assumed to be rejoined with their abusive husbands after death.

Hello Abdullah: Bravo to you for your kind ways and your dedication to be helpful in bringing logic and reassurance to so many people of the Muslim faith but slaves of the Islam system. You are also helping all the people of other religions (or no religion at all) to understand that so many Muslims are also feeling lost and without clear and kind direction. They are living in total subjugation of an ancient and ignorant dictator even though so many only want to do what's right. Yes, it's true, many (especially males) take advantage and interpret text that suit their hidden and unfair purposes. Through the ages, it has always been a great temptation for males to take advantage of their physical strength to subdue and even mistreat women and only the males of higher moral strength honor their roles of guardian and protector of their chosen life companion. Most women carry in their hearts and souls the instinct to nurture their partner and their children and teach them the way to become honorable and responsible citizens as they grow up. They do not wish to cheat and be unfaithful unless they are with a man whose shortcomings are translated into unjustified suspicion that kills any chance for love to survive and then the wife will seek comfort in the arms of another. The males need to check their own ways before blaming their mates. It might also help if the males were fair and satisfy themselves with one wife instead of having opposite rules for themselves and their consort. Much is wrong with many religions including the Western and Eastern religions and we must examine and use our intelligence, knowledge, discernment and honest behavior to be the best we can in the eyes of a good and forgiving God and our own conscience. Peace is possible among families and among nations & it starts with honesty & kindness.

Aroob Khan Why are you denying it? I used to be like you, but instead of denying it I looked into it and saw this religion of 'peace' I didn't agree with any of what the Quran and hadith said. According to Qur'an women are half of what man are, meaning that they lack intellect and forget about stuff easily. I'll give you the verses. Qur'an If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful. Qur'an 4:16 (also see Tafsirs of this verse below) We also (sent) Lut: He said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practise your lusts on men in preference to women : ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds. Sahih Bukhari 7:72:774 Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men and those women who assume the similitude (manners) of men. He also said, "Turn them out of your houses." He turned out such-and-such person out, and 'Umar turned out such-and-such person. Sahih Bukhari 8:82:820

when i was a young girl, my mom tried to "comfort" me by making an analogy that Allah's relationship with his creations is like my relationship with my dolls and toys. He can basically do anything he wants with us. It's not us to question why most of the human species are going to hell, why there's so much cruelty in the world, etc. "Basically, we're his slaves," my mom said. "We're his creations, we're his toys. We literally have no power or say in what happens to us." And she said all this with a huge smile on her face I actually got creeped out. Problem is, I'm never that cruel to my dolls. Not if I know my dolls have feelings and feels pain. I bet if I told her about the time I got molested and r*ped by a Muslim man when I got to college, she'd brush it off and say Allah is wiser than me and we are indeed just eternal slaves for his entertainment.

In the Far East, we worship the goddess of mercy and compassion. I don’t believe in the folk religion personally but the notion that she represents deeply influence our culture. She swears to save all sentient beings from suffering. That for is a much better religion than the one that wants to torment people in eternal fire and laugh at them. The god of Abraham seriously lacks mercy and compassion.

Even in our imperfect human world, the worst crimes are punishable by life, or death sentences. In much of the world, the legal system is geared to reforming and altering the behavior of criminal types, (of which I have been.) But any god that would choose to inflict serious physical and psychological harm for any extended period, much less FOREVER, for any misdeed, is no deity.

Atheism is one step to find true essence of God. We have to search for God inside ourselves, in our lives, not in scriptures, not in religious books. When you search for God, you will walk a path which will lead to him. The truly God is in our interior, not in books, not in temples...search for him, and he will show himself to you by signals. This is why all religions have less from God. The search for God is personal. I cannot help you, no one cans. When somebody comes up with the path to God, he is lying and trying to obtain followers and power for political goals. God is inside you, and he will come to you eventually if you try to find him...but it takes time.

The thing is is that the ancient Hebrews didn't believe in our concept of heaven and hell. The modern ideas of "afterlife" stem mostly from pagan greek ideas. The idea that you go to heaven or hell when you die doesn't exist in the Hebrew scriptures. The Jews at the time of Christ believed in a future resurrection of the dead, not an afterlife. This is the idea that Christ expresses in the four gospels. The idea of the resurrection was that when Yahweh destroys the world and sets up his rule on the earth then his servants will be raised from the dead to live bodily on the new earth. The wicked would just be destroyed permanently. There was no idea of "eternal" punishment in fire.

Just because you can't prove Hell does not exist,doesn't mean that Hell really does not exist. Either prove it to me that Hell does not exist or just accept there is possibility of Hell and Heavens.There is no scientific advancement till date that says Hell doesn't exist. So one casually accepts that Hell never existed but fails to see the other side of the coin.

Good question. I used to ask the same question. Thorough study of the Christian Bible and historical records show that eternal torment was adopted later on. Don't know about Allah and his hellfire but the Bible does not teach that people go into hellfire for eternity but some Christians continue to believe in hellfire. After "studying" the Bible along wirh historical texts "common sense" will tell you that "hellfire" which is originally Gehenna, is a city garbage/waste area where dead criminals unworthy of proper burial are thrown into. Unfortunately some bodies when thrown do not get into the fire part and start to be filled with worms...and eventually decay. It was a very loathsome place for the Jews hence Jesus using that to demonstrate that unrepentant, deliberate wicked sinners will have a permanent death i.e. no chance of living again nor remembered nor have memorial tomb. They won't exist anymore. Regarding God knowing our sinful nature, it is why he offers forgiveness on his part and on our part, with our freewill, repentance. It's a two way thing.

Who gives an infinite punishment for a finite crime? I guess with no rehabilitation, and only eternal punishment, recidivism rates remain at 0. If I were a god and wanted to send people to hell. how would I set things up? Maybe I'd hide really well and expect people to figure everything out themselves.

People from first millennium imagined God as emperors of that time, which in fact, was common for a powerful ruler to want people worship him and punished those who didn’t that. So, people imagined God as these emperors: powerful, controlled everything, and cruel to those who didn’t submitted to them and believed they were gods. The jewish, christian and islamic God was such like that: he created people to be their servants, and adore and worship him, and if these people didn’t did that, they would be severely punished. It was what ancient people imagined and understood God. It is strange how a lot of, people from 21 century still have difficult to realize it is an archaic concept of God when we are not anymore submitted to vain and tyrant emperors. At least in western world. I believe people who lives in Saudi Arabia would have more facility to understands and see God as people from 7th century as they still lives under oppressive political regimes.

what i find is another interesting question is what happens to people who came back after a coma with serious brain damge and are a completly other pesons or mentaly disabeld an live the rest of their lives as this new person ( maybe longer than their original self). are they ,,fixed,, in paradise and the ,,after coma person,, who has a right to exists too in afterlife is simply wiped out. my grandma had a 6 hour surgery and came back as a completly other person ( i read the chance is relativly high in older people when they have full narcosis like when you shutdown your pc and by starting it up a new instance of windows is loaded because the old one was killed) and this person is just somewhat familiar because she has access to the memorys of the former instance or conciousness the brain has created

Well you are asking such good questions, and I enjoy the deepness of your views. But your questions really make good sense in the biblical worldview. The reality is that people will not go to hell for "rejecting God". But it is because of their wickedness, and because God is fully righteous. Jesus is a life rescue for all who will put their hope in him. So those who put their trust in Jesus, because of what he has done on the cross, he will be able to give them mercy/grace and life and take them to heaven. But christianity is more than a hope for the hereafter, it is a life that starts right from the day that you invite Jesus into your life. May God and Jesus bless you.

Simple answer in this hadith : Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1924 So if a person is cruel, kills innocent people, tortures his colleges, throws his parents out of the house when they are old, slits innocent children (just as Pharow did to the children of Israil) Buries daughters alive( as the Arabs did) allows Sati or suttee a practice, in which a widow sacrificed herself by sitting atop her deceased husband's funeral pyre. Or even today people burn their daughters-in-laws for dowery, All these crimes are punisable, aren't they?

How did you think Budhism was wiped out from Afghanistan, zoroastrianism wiped out from Persia? Why do you think parts of the subcontinent (Bangladesh and Pakistan) despite once being thriving centres for Hindu and Buddhist learning centres ended up being muslim majority? Muslims waged war, captured female POWs and often raped them, discriminated against women, non believers, apostates and heretics on many cases. Look at Taliban. Don't you think these people deserve to burn in hell as well/ or is it only applicable when muslims are the victim?

Reasons of the punishment in the hereafter was the dispute (Angels) had regarding Adams (man) creation when Allah said: He will create from clay a man and when He has proportioned him prostrate on to him, they all prostrated accept iblees. So reasons according to my understanding is the Angels had been given no knowledge in why He (Allah) created Adam and the Materiel world in the first place. It clearly proves that Angels had the free will prior to the creation of mankind and jinnkind. Angels were exposed to the truth when Allah asked Adam (man) to tell them (angels) their names. So the Angels replied "Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise." The culprit was Iblees the Devil (fallen angel) who became from the rejectors and promised to mislead mankind and jinn for all times. Now we need to go back to Allah in a purified Light and to join in the ranks with the rest of the Angels once again.
