I don`t think people understand how much the lack of American born superstars hurt NBA ratings. The NFL had its two biggest Super Hero`s on TV Christmas day. The NBA`s biggest draw was Steph and Lebron. 40 and 36 years old on teams that are not contenders. What would the NFL ratings look like if they`d scheduled the Dolphins vs Panthers followed by the Jets vs the Rams... That`s essentially what the NBA put out there.

Nba isn't a sport like the NFL where the teams are marketed. The NBA is a player marketed league. If the nba does not enhance its product, the viewer no matter who they are regardless or age, sex, religion, race, class, etc. will not watch the games, and therefore the nba will either fall, branch into separate groups, or fall into a category that is simply not a traditional nba product anymore. Marc Stein making it sound like changing the rules is rocket science. Its relatively simple. Look what happened when Wilt dominated the paint earlier in his career. They changed the rules. Maybe have a 5 second beyond the arc rule? Or maybe a player cant dribble for more than 5 seconds without passing? Or at least 2 players at all times have to be INSIDE the arc? If the NBA/NBAPA wants to change the rules they can just do it. MLB did it in a few short seasons, and baseball is exciting again. What people need to be asking is whether Silver should continue to be commissioner.

Back in the day, we fell in love with players from college and followed them into the NBA. Now we barely know the guys coming out so when they get drafted, we don’t care about them. And even when we get excited for a guy like Zion, he gets drafted to a team the the media won’t cover(as they’re stuck on the stupid goat debate) then he’s always hurt so we stopped caring about him. The face of the league are still the 35-40 yr old superstars (lebron, kd, curry). The current best players are internarional players (jokic, luka, giannis, shai, embiid). I live in Michigan and if I could turn on my tv and get Pistons games over the air for free like I could 10-15 years ago...I’d watch almost every game. I haven’t had cable for almost 10 years now and I’ve never paid for league pass because every one of their games would be blacked out anyway. You could say that the style of play are the reasons for the low ratings, but we’re comparing 82 games to 17 games. You can pretty much catch every football on the main tv networks every Sunday (Mon & Thurs games are guaranteed). For the NBA, you need multiple avenues to catch every game that’s not your local team and not on the main sports networks.

I have heard everyone’s argument about this and this is how I feel. The NFL has no business being on during Christmas unless Christmas falls on a Sunday or Thursday or Monday. These are days the NFL has always operated. So now between forcing you to go sign up for subscriptions, And now playing football any day of the week it’s clear to me. They only care about the money. Meanwhile, 30 of the 32 NFL teams are garbage. The NBA plays games every day and for them to have Christmas shouldn’t even be disputed. Now, if you wanna get into the ins and outs of basketball and why you don’t like it versus like it that’s a whole different conversation. But they have always been on Christmas. The truth right now is this, the NFL knows that we are sheep and we will do anything to watch that game. They are completely robbing us and we don’t seem to care.

In the United States, the NFL is king. On the international level, the NBA only plays second fiddle to soccer. Football is a strange and violent game to those outside the United States. NBA doesn't have to worry about taking on the NFL. International is more lucrative. Messi doesn't have any missed meal cramps because soccer is fourth or fifth in US popularity. Basketball players and owners' bank accounts are growing. Football players make way less than NBA bench warmers.
