In that game against the Pacers he broke his right cheekbone and suffered a concussion giving him double vision. He didn’t want to leave his teammates alone on the floor so he snuck back into the game against the doctors orders. A true competitor!

A couple of fun facts… 1) the “unnecessary” long behind-the-back pass you mentioned was actually Larry’s tribute to Magic. That was the exact day Magic told Larry about his HIV Positive diagnosis. Larry did the “Showtime” type pass as his tribute to Magic. 2) the night of his retirement ceremony in Boston, they sold out The Garden. And there wasn’t even a game that night lol. On an off night, the whole arena was packed out just for his retirement.

Larry is my #1 player of all time. He is the only player in the modern era to win 3 consecutive mvp's in the era with Jordan and magic and the bad boy pistons and a whole list of others. Jordan was 0-6 against him in playoff series. His rebounding, passing, scoring, unmatched clutchness and sneaky defense makes him my #1

Well chief if you're gonna talk about Bird being 6-0 vs Jordan, make sure you mention Bird's 4 other HOF teammates who was on that team as well, it's not like those teams were on a even scale and not to mention Jordan was in his 2nd and 3rd season and the bulls didn't even start to build around Jordan yet and this is coming from a Bird fan as well.

I was lucky enough to grow up in the 70-80's and was able to see Bird play many times in person being from Indiana, saw him in college and the pros, the younger generation can watch all the highlight videos they want to but they will never really know how good he really was, As you mentioned back then there was NO load management, no rest days ect, you played hurt, if you didn't it was a very legit injury. His toughness was off the charts, his basketball IQ was off the charts, his ability to make the big shot was off the charts! He came into the league as a stone cold killer who wanted the ball at the end of every game. People of this generation say Lebron is better and that simply is NOT true, the only thing Lebron has over Bird is strength, speed and being a better athlete. Anyone thats honest would never pick Lebron in game 7 of the finals with 5 seconds left down 1 to take the last shot over Bird, it took Lebron several years to even get to the point of being comfortable taking the last shot, Bird came into the league built for it. Is LeBron tougher then BIrd? Hell no, is he a better shooter? Hell no, is he a better rebounder? Hell no, is he a better passer? Maybe equal but not better, is he more clutch? Hell no, is he a better leader? Hell no... i mean seriously, in no era would i ever take LeBron over Bird. When i break down the GOAT i do it by position, PG-Magic SG-MJ SF-Bird..we can debate PF and C all day but IMO PG,SG,SF are locks.

Larry and MJ are always on my starting all-time 5. Only them. Listed at 6'9", but was a legit 6'10". Best passing forward of all time. Best SF of all time. 6-0 vs Jordan in the playoffs, 3 STRAIGHT league MVPs, best NBA winning percentage behind only magic by less than half a percent. There is so much. Folks say he was not athletic, that is horseshit. He had the same vertical as Karl Malone, maybe the fastest hands and best hand eye coordination of any BB player ever. And his heart, brain and confidence were unmatched, along with being nearly fundamentally perfect. Nasty rebounder. Really really good post player, best mid range shooter of all time and his range was limitless.

#1 for me. From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back that would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Thats just one of the injuries that he played with. In this video he came back from getting his cheek fractured & a concussion. He also came back to a game. After getting injured with a fractured eye orbiter & double vision.. Won that game too. He didn't even use any pain meds, shots, etc. for any of his injuries. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86.. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Not even Magic, Jordan, KD or Lebron have such honors. Larry is also the only one Jordan couldn't beat. 6 - 0 playoffs. Well pretty much everything you said is surface level or common knowledge for any of us who've been watching NBA basketball for 35 plus years, you also showed you have little to no understanding or perspective when you said " Larry is the one guy Jordan couldn't beat 6-0 in the playoffs " 😂 if you were to say that to Bird, he'll look at you like you're a grown man with the mindset of a 13 year old kid cause it's very clear you don't know he had on his team, let's take a look... Kevin McHale - HOF' er Dennis Johnson - HOF'er Robert Parish - HOF'er Bill Walton - HOF'er ( who was past his prime but still effective with his rebounding and passing ) but let's not stop there, let's come with something BEYOND SURFACE TALK... Bird said this in his book 👇 " It's not that Jordan couldn't win in the 80's, it's just that he didn't have the COACHING or the ROSTER TALENT that all the other teams had who were winning at that particular time and thank God he didn't. That's why you never hear me bragging about beating him in the 80's cause I had a championship roster and he didn't, he was on one of the worst rosters in the NBA in the mid 80's, Jordan in the 90's would've been something to brag about beating cause he had everything he needed, the right coach and the roster talent " But let's not stop there.... Magic said this in 87'....." Jordan is the best player in the world, he just don't have the championship rosters that Larry and I myself have " THAT THERE 👆 IS CALLED PERSPECTIVE AND UNDERSTANDING!!!

The thing about Bird is, though the highlights are impressive enough, you really need to watch the games to see how he controlled the flow of games by doing absolutely everything on the court, scoring, passing, rebounding, blocks, steals, executing all the fundamentals and just generally being in the right place at the right time. The game where he smacked his face on the court? That was a first round elimination game. At this point in his career his back was tissue paper. He needed to spend night before games in the hospital , in traction, and was in severe pain. When he went down everybody gasped because we all thought his back was done for. Instead it was a broken cheek and a concussion, so naturally Larry came back, dominated the Pacers and saved their playoff run. Stealing Isaiah Thomas' inbounds pass against the Pistons? Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 1987. The Celts were struggling and looking like they were headed to eventual defeat to the Bad Boys, but then Larry does THIS, which won them the game and turned the momentum of the series around. They went on to defeat the Pistons in game 7. Here's Isaiah's perspective on that historic play. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpjJpaGvjaaenqM

Obviously it's all opinion but I got him at 1. Also I have to finally comment on something. I've seen this reaction video multiple times. And you are the 4th person that commented on Birds behind the back pass at half court saying it was unnecessary. Usually in that case I would agree. Definitely unnecessary. HOWEVER I'm shocked nobody has picked up on this. I'm pretty sure that was the first game Bird played after hearing the news about Magic getting the HIV Virus. Bird talked to Magic the night before and almost chose to not play this game. But ultimately he decided to play and that specific behind the back pass at half court was to honor his friend Earving Magic Johnson. Great video, love your reaction to this one.

Larry Bird was part machine…he had to be. He was programmed to win and he became that machine every time he stepped on the court. He was not intimidated by any opponent…in fact, I think the more difficult the challenge the better he performed. He willed himself to win. But he was not someone who sought attention; he didn’t need to be the star…he played TEAM basketball; something that seems to be missing in today’s NBA. Everyone acknowledges that there was something special about him. I truly feel blessed that I was able to watch him in real time back in the 80s. "Bro, you're terrible bro, you see he getting cooked and you're not helping?" that's Clyde Drexler you're talking about (Jerome Kersey is the one getting cooked lol). But you know Larry Bird made a LOT of players look like they couldn't play defense. Fun fact: Larry Bird has two non-functioning knuckles on his shooting hand. He himself has said that his shooting was never quite the same after he injured his index finger in a softball game the summer before his rookie season (he f'd up the pinky finger in a game in 1985). His index finger bends about 45 degrees towards the thumb, his pinky looks like a question mark. You're watching a man with a mangled shooting hand and a slipped disk in his back (threw it out shoveling gravel for his mom's driveway) in most of these clips. There may some day be someone as skilled at basketball as Bird, but as of right now, nobody has come close. Half the NBA could run circles around him, could out jump and out muscle him, but it didn't matter, he was a genius and of the toughest competitors who has ever played in any sport. When Larrys retirement was done there was no game at the Boston Garden yet it was sold out, let that sink in "no game yet sold out" for one mans retirement. For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

What makes Larry in the convo as the GOAT is this... His thinking... His ability to make you think a pass is coming only to take the shot, to make you think a shot is coming only to pass it.. You simply did not know what he was going to do. He was always a step or two ahead of the other person, yet could hit a dagger or pefrectly hit a pass, and this could change at a blink of a moment, he was simply two steps ahead of everyone else. Truly as someone that grew up in the MJ era, so you know my thoughts on it on paper, if Larry had a full career, and hadn't had an injury shortened career, yeah there would be no question who was the GOAT. Tough as nails but played the game as a chess match. The other thinking part was his trash talking, to get in someones head, yeah that gained him a step or two as well.

I always felt I was the luckiest kid in the world in the mid to late 80s. My dad worked maintenance at the Omni in Atlanta and basically had to work most of the events there. So from age 13-17 I not only had the privilege of getting to see some Amazing concerts and a few Big (WCW) Wrestling Events that were held there, I was also there for just about every Hawks home game from 84-88. It was as good as it gets for a teenager! And as a kid I truly had NO IDEA at what Treasures all the pics and autographs I got in those few years would become years down the road! Anyway, I was a Hawks fan until they played Bird.. LOL Bird was my favorite but I will say that there was NOBODY more amazing to watch than Jordan… in person he looked like a High Schooler playing against Middle Schoolers most of the time. The way he moved and floated seemed so effortless. I get a headache when I try to put a number by these 2 Goats!!! They ( to me) are both The GOATS.. but in their own signature-style. They were both the very best at doing THEIR things on the court that made everyone notice that they were on a higher level than the rest of the players around them. And they both just outplayed their competition… Jordan with his athleticism and Bird with his consistency and his Mind. So I respect you for whichever way you have these 4 guys… But if you ever got to see these 2 back when basketball was a Hands-On sport like I did then I’d like to think you’d get a headache trying to pick one above the other like I do.. lol New sub and fan here.. keep up the great work

My husband and I call Magic and Bird, Ying and Yang… they’re like 2 sides of the same coin. One was quiet and to himself (if he wasn’t trash talking) the other loved the lime light… it really shows in the courtship of rivals Magic vs Bird. I think that’s the best sports documentary I’ve ever seen. And the last two lines in the documentary, one line from Magic and one line from Bird, really sums it up I think.

Totally off the charts clutch, killer, tough...only injuries stopped him, 3 straight MVP's vs. the legends of the game, he beat them all...keep watchin, this is a little intro, check his trash talkin and welcoming rookies to the league videos, nasty..

If you want to see Bird and Celtics ELITE passing you NEED to see the videos - "Larry Birds best passes" or something like that, also "Larry Birds 50 most amazing assists" and for some of the best Celtics team passing ever check out - "86 Celtics Tribute, The Beautiful Game" -- in the last one you will see some of the best team passing in NBA history, you might think youre watching the Globetrotters at times. You have SO much more amazing footage to see on Larry Bird, his Elite passing, insane court vision and seeming to be two moves ahead of everyone else not to mention his insane trash talking videos. Larry routinely called his shot with trash talk - and then MADE THEM. Larry ALWAYS backed his trash talk up by telling the opposing teams and their coaches the play he was going to make AND THEN DOING IT. A true LEGEND.

I'm from Cleveland and I'm grateful to Lebron for the Championship he helped bring to the Cavs. I can't give the goat title to him, in my opinion players that jump from team to team like KD and Lebron as well as others to form super teams in order to win titles can't be considered the goat. but that does not take away from his greatness. until I see one of today's player tell the other team what shot they are going to make, where on the court they are making it from, without the opposition being able to stop them, while also never taking games off to rest, playing the number of minutes per game he played, playing with broken bones and hurt in numerous ways, be Mr. clutch, passes like he has eyes in the back of his head, play with their off hand and score 20 in 3 quarters, shoot from anywhere on the court, average double digits rebounds, belong in the 50/40/90 club; which he founded; Bird will be my goat! and for those who are unaware the 3-point line is a foot and 9 inches closer to the basket now than it was when Bird played. They say he was unathletic, he was slow couldn't jump I know another athlete who gets that same rap, his name is Tom Brady, I'll take Birds and Brady's kind of un athleticism any day, every day! and I could go on.

I watched Bird in hundreds of games. What was it like? It wasn't a game or a job to him. It was a crusade, a matter of honor. He always played to win and never accepted any less than a complete effort from himself or his teammates. I remember a pre-season game with Philly that turned into a brawl because Larry got pissed.

That behind the back half court pass you said was unnecessary was done in honor of Magic Johnson his very good friend. That was when Magic told him he was HIV positive and he dedicated that pass in honor of Johnson. So there really was a very good reason for it.

I'm from Boston, and had Celtics season tickets from 1981-1991, so I saw every one of Bird's home games for 10 of his 13 seasons. Bruh, when I tell you the boy was a special player, I mean he was a special player. So many times the game just got so easy for him, he would do all sorts of things to make the game more interesting for him. I saw him sink three straight three-point shots using his off hand, just because he liked the challenge. But his trash talking was second to none! Larry would just roast players on the court just to piss them off enough to throw them off their game. All that stuff you hear about him is absolutely true! Just like Danny Ainge said, Bird used to say to his teammates, " C'mon man gimme the ball, I got this dude in my torture chamber here!" And he didn't care if the guy heard him or not. And so many times you'd hear him giving it to the opposing teams coach to. I heard him yelling at Knicks coach Hubie Brown as he was coming by their bench, " Hey coach, you better try it again because whatever you taught them in practice ain't working out here. I'm killing this guy you got on me!" He was funny as shit! Yeah baby, Larry Legend was the "real deal!" He did it all out there. 3-pointers when they were needed, incredible pass after incredible pass. His off-ball skills were just sick. And that boy killed so many teams with his buzzer-beaters. In my book, Larry Bird is the all-time GOAT!!! My top ten players are: 1. Larry Bird 2. Michael Jordan 3. Bill Russell 4. Julius "Dr.J" Erving 5. Kobe Bryant 6. LeBron James 7. Walt Frazier 8. Magic Johnson 9. Kareem Abdul Jabbar 10. Dominique Wilkins

I never saw him in person, and basketball isn't my top TV sport, but I loved watching the Celtics in this era, especially when it was a duel with the Lakers. Bird was game-smart. Knew second by second where all 10 players on the court would be. And his teammates weren't just following Bird around for scraps...they were a five fingered hand that flipped the Bird at a lot of opposing lineups

U gotta understand he is playing Klay Thompson basketball only dribbling a few times and scoring 40+ but he is also a backup playmaker and because he is so lethal outside u can put 2 dominant interior forces on his team to own the paint. He is the epitomy of what it means to be a small forward. In today's league with everyone being able to shoot 3s he could play the point like Luka does if he wanted to and run pick n roll all game and score whenever he wants but he wants to defend big guys and rebound too. The fear opponents had when the Celtics got a stop when Bird was already down at the other side of the court hitting from the spot he got the ball almost everytime and making all the fast guys look slow. GOAT

I don’t know if anybody in the comments has told you this, but when the players of the other team (Scott Hastings, Tree Rollins, Eddie Johnson and Cliff Levingston)celebrated because Larry had just put an all time for Boston of 60 points on the board. When the Lakers got to their film session later, they were all fine and they were made to watch that section of the film over and over and over again to about 20 times. 😂😂 .

There are a couple of really good videos about Bird's trash talking a few that describe the numerous serious injuries he played through in his career that I hope you check out. And yes he could dunk. He was listed at 6'9 but several players say he was 6'10 easy. When standing next to Kareem, who is over 7', Bird is very close to his height. People dog his athleticism, or supposed lack of, but take into account how big he was and it plain to see he was far more athletic than today's generation claims. Especially earlier in his career before the more debilitating injuries started to pile up. The Making The Case video is very informative as well.

That steal against the Bad Boy Piston was in GAME 5 of the East Finals. It was 2-2. You lose that game, then you lose the series in game 6 in Detroit. It saved the game, the series. It was EPIC! At an EPIC moment. The '87 Celtics were a weary injured team, hanging by a threat. BIRD saved them. He's the most clutch player evrer. They went on to win that series against a great team in 7. In context, that's one of the greatest plays in hoops history.
