You should watch more 80's bb. Bird is probably the most fun to watch. LeBron rates Bird in his top three. Bird played against Magic and throughout the 80's the Celtics played the Lakers five times in the finals. All through the eighties one or the other made the finals every year. Jordan never won a playoff game against Bird getting swept twice in 86 and 87. Bird's Celtics were a much better team than Jordan's Bulls at the time but Jordan respected Bird. I kind of feel sorry for you youngsters that haven't seen some of the greats. You would enjoy seeing some of your idols favorite players. Like I said LeBron has spent a lot of time studying Bird and there is a good reason for that.

Three consecutive MVP's. He also won coach of the year and executive of the year. The first person average 50% from the field, 40% from 3-point line, and 90% free throws in a season. I think he did that three times in his career. He also won the three point contest 3 years in a row. Before he joined the Celtics oh, they had a losing record. @@NoMercy4k You're right on how complete his game was. Offensively he had the whole package except the ups to finish over people. But this lack of burst probably helped him develop all his other tricks to compensate. He was not easy to guard since he didn't need much space to get his shot off. And you are right he helped move the game forward, because no big could shoot like him. If you put a big guy on him, he took them outside where back then you didn't have many big guys who could stay with him. Put a quick guy on him and he took them right into the post. When he had the ball he was dangerous going left, right, back or just where he stood to shoot....AND he was one of the best passers in history. He was much better defensively than a lot of young folks understand, he had a great sense of anticipation and tended to get to the right spot a step of ahead of people. Hall of Famer James Worthy said he would rather cover Jordan than Bird because with Jordan it was just physical, but Bird never stopped moving and you had to think about him the entire game and you would be mentally exhausted by the end of the night. You would watch what Bird was doing no matter who had the ball. The other thing that people loved about him was the way he played the game. He cared about winning. He didn't care if he made the shot or not.....one of the reasons he and Magic saved the NBA was they were team oriented and playing winning basketball. Their passing made the game beautiful again. He never cared about stats. In a game in Utah he had 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 9 steals in a blowout by the third quarter. His coach tried to put him back in the game to get the Quadruple Double...the first ever involving steals and he said no. His attitude was we're killing these guys, what's the point. It would be a meaningless honor. The Celtics were terrible before he joined them. His college team had more wins than the Celtics did the year before he joined.

Great reaction. From 85 - he retired, Larry played with a broken back that would lose its structural stability. It would lock up in abnormal positions. He would have to get adjustments just to be able to play. Sometimes goiing straight to the hospital after a game. To spend the night in traction. That's just one of the injuries that he played with. One game he came back from getting his cheek fractured & a concussion. He also came back to a game. After getting injured with a fractured eye orbiter. Which he had double vision the rest of the night. Won that game too. Guessing which of the two baskets he was seeing. Was the real one. He didn't even use any pain meds, shots, etc. for any of his injuries. Yet he was still able to dominate and put up stats. He led the league in 3 pointers twice 85,86. Founding member of the 50-40-90 with 2 seasons. FIRST 3pt contest winner in 86 then 87, 88. MVP 84 , 85, 86.. 2 Finals MVPs, 12 All star, 10 all NBA Teams, 3x All Defense selection. All in 13 years. It took Bird just two seasons to get his first ring. Larry turned the Celtics around his first season. From a 29 - 53 season to 61 - 21 season. Larry's one of 8 hall of famers to win rookie of the year & be named to the all NBA first team. The only one so far to have those honors after Larry is Tim Duncan. Larry is the only player Jordan couldn't beat. 6 -0 playoffs; 17 - 11 reg. If you watch the full game he was laying on the floor by the bench between shifts before the fall because he couldn't sit due to his back. One of, if not the, most clutch player ever, hustle, hustle, hustle. If I'm starting a team from scratch, Bird is my first choice because he could play beside anyone and make his teammates better. Nah bird ain't the best all around players ever, magic owned him 3 to one in title games and beat him in national championship game and beat him head to head 23 to 17, plus if you're the best all around player it's 2 sides of the court Larry wasn't bad nor great he was ok as a defender so he can't be the best all around player, people always only focus on the offense never defense
@pauloverlie40642 жыл бұрын
@@eazymoneymane7789 3 time all defense 2nd team is not chopped liver, that is 3 times as one of the top 10-12 defensive players in the league. He was a very good defender, just not Jordan or LeBron. BTW 1 and 2 vs. Magic in the finals. '87 Parish had ankle troubles, McHale was playing on a broken foot, Walton wasn't available much due to injuries, and Ainge was playing dinged. Still took 6 games and was one interesting call and a missed buzzer 3 from taking seven (or even losing). Magic is the best all around point guard ever, but wasn't as good as Bird on defense nor as a pure shooter. Magic was great, he was a winner who made his teammates better and could be very clutch when called upon. Magic also has the best winning percentage in the history of the NBA, a half percentage point ahead of Bird. It is still an opinion that can't be settled by empirical data. I won't argue against Magic, but I'll still take Bird. Then there is MJ, a whole different animal!! However, not necessarily better.

@@eazymoneymane7789 I don't have a problem with that. Just remember that Bird took a 29-53 team to a 61-21 team in his first year and he was the only addition. Jordan never did that. No argument on defense, Jordan was a monster defender. Offense, however, depends on what you value. Bird was certainly the better shooter, Jordan the better scorer, Bird was a better rebounder and passer. Again, your opinion, but empirical data suggests it is close. I rank Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan as equal GOATs. Their play transcended the league and the game and changed it for the better. but, again, that is just my opinion.

I grew up in the Larry Bird era. Bird was a basketball genius!! That dude won 3 Celtic NBA Championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986, and won 2 NBA FINALS MVPs!! Bird was no joke, he would hit the GAME WINNING SHOTS day in and day out!! If you need a basket, just give the ball to Bird!! Bird hurt his back in the SUMMER pouring CONCRETE for his driveway!! He was old school and even cut his own lawn!! Sadly the back injury was severe and it shortened Birds playing career and we all suffered because of that. It would have been great to see LARRY BIRD and his teammates with Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the NBA PLAYOFFS!! Unfortunately Bird was forced to retire when the BULLS were becoming the dominant team!! Bird is in everyone's NBA TOP 10!! Your right Bird isn't over JORDAN or LEBRON but Bird would be in MOST PEOPLES starting 5 of ALL TIME!! I played basketball on the best large high school team in Washington State and he took 2nd and 4th in State my two seasons on Varsity. We lost the State 4A Championship to Mercer Island and they had a 6 foot 7 inch point guard and a 7 foot 2 inch center!! I also played against JOHN STOCKTON that played for GONZAGA PREP!! Stockton went on to play for GONZAGA UNIVERSITY and he was drafted by the UTAH JAZZ!! It's amazing Stockton almost didn't even get a chance to show his skills because Gonzaga was a NO NAME COLLEGE back in the day!! Stockton retired with 2 NBA records for Career Total STEALS and ASSISTS!! NBA Analysts have said his records will NEVER BE BROKEN!! One reason his records will stand is STOCKTON played a super long career!! Great Channel DUDE!!

Good video. Here's some Bird stuff: Took a team that won 29 games the previous season to 61 wins and the conference finals his rookie year. Won his first of 3 championships his second year. Only one of 3 players ever to win the straight league mvps The only player in NBA history to retire with a stat line of 20+ ppg, 10+ rpg and 5+ apg (24.3ppg/10.0 rpg/6.3 apg) 3 time all defensive team and he's 4th all-time in defensive win shares. Injuries severely hampered and shortened his career or his name would be in every goat conversation. As to his heart: in his last year, Boston was struggling down the stretch and on a 3 game losing streak. Larry dropped a 49 point triple double on Portland, who went to the Finals that year, while wearing a back brace.

Larry was on a different level with his trash talking, MJ learned a lot of his from Bird. Bird would tell you the play or what he was going to do before and then do it, he was unstoppable! The left hand game was 22 or 27 left handed with a total of 47 for the night. The game (Washington Bullets) he actually made 3+ 1 to tie + win the game w/2OT's. He was Mr. Clutch!!! You should check out the documentary "Magic & Bird", to learn about their legendary rivalry, which goes way back. They faced each other in the 1979 NCAA Finals, where Magic's team won, and their rivalry continued into the NBA, with them each being the figurehead of the biggest team rivalry in the NBA - Celtics/Lakers.

The most underrated thing about Bird is his size. Magic is listed at 6'9 but if you see pics of them standing next to each other, Larry is easily three inches taller. Dude is huge.

One of my very favourite things in life is watching young hoopers discover Larry Bird...lol...he's supernatural...I've seen the actual video hundreds of times and I never get tired of it...2 things not really mentioned here....1/ unbelievably clutch 2/ incredible rebounder...averaged more boards career than Ewing...Bird's on hoop Rushmore to me
@bbwng542 жыл бұрын
Beyond his shooting that everyone knows about, he one of the very best (best?) passing small forwards of all time and one of the most clutch players of all time. If you look closely at many of the highlights (eg Seattle, Portland, Washington, etc.), he is winning the games as the clock is running out at the end of the games.
