BBALLBREAKDOWN coach nick ur comparing jordan vs lebron abilities but Doesnt jordan weak opponents in the 80"s and 90"s made it seem better then Jordan actually is compared to lebron? i mean comparing both of them is totally not logic since lebron plays in a League 20+ years after jordan. different era different talent different impact in the game

Anybody who thinks LeBron is greater than Jordan must understand that performances in big games is more important than regular season stats. I personally think J.J. Berea played almost as well as LeBron in the Dallas series. No scoring title leader and "Chosen One", by self-acclamation should ever just score 8 points with 4 turnovers in a key championship game. LeBron let everyone down. He wasn't impressive against San Antonio either. I guarantee you Jordan wouldn't have gotten swept, even if he were outmatched.

Michael Jordan has 5 of the 7 top playoff series scoring averages of all time and 6 of the top 10. Lebron doesn't have one in the top 10. Kobe doesn't. Wilt doesn't even have one.... Yet MJ owns over half of this list including ALL players in the NBA. He averaged over 40 PPG in 5 different playoff series. That's insane. His top 6 playoff series averages are 45.2, 45, 43.7, 43., and 41 respectively, the last being in the finals. Jordan holds a whopping 42 NBA Playoff Records. To put that in prospective, this is how he measures up to other All Time Players: Number of Playoff Records: Michael Jordan - 42 Bill Russell - 15 Wilt Chamberlain - 13 Kareem Abdul Jabbar - 5 Kobe Bryant - 5 Lebron James - 0 Michael Jordan has more Post-Season Records than Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Kobe and Lebron Combined. Now read this: Jordan holds the Highest career PER average in NBA regular season, post season and NBA Finals history. Jordan holds the Highest career Efficiency rating average in NBA regular season, post season and NBA Finals history. Jordan holds the Highest career Gamescore average in NBA regular season, post season and NBA Finals history. Jordan holds the Highest career Winshares average in NBA regular season, post season and NBA Finals history. Jordan holds the Highest MVP shares average in NBA regular season, post season and NBA Finals history. Jordan is the only player to lead the league in Scoring and Win Defensive player of the Year a season. Jordan is the only player to Win a championship, scoring title and steals title in the same season. Jordan is one of 3 players in NBA History to win a NBA scoring championship and NBA Championship in 1 season. George Mikan and Lew Alcindor did it once Each. Jordan did it six times. All six times also leading the playoffs in scoring. Mikan did that once and Alcindor didn't do it at all.

Lebron has plenty of playoff records wtf? MJ all the way but hold up! Didn't he just break the all time record for most points in the playoffs, and most triple doubles. and hes the 1st player to make 7 straight finals since the 60's celtics! Again MJ is the GOAT and is better than LBJ, but to say he has 0 playoff records in blasphemous.

and a prime lebron getting schooled by a poor man version of jordan multiple times as i recalled. it is always a bit biased and unfair to measure individual based on team success but in some way it is necessary. but obviously the stats we are seeing could be very misleading. for example, the east has been very weak for the last 10 year and it has been padding lebron's stats to no end. look at what lebron has done so far facing a top tier team in the final and tell me how has he been doing so far. the to/ass ratio is bad and that's supposed to be his biggest selling point. in the west you at least have 4-5 genuinely competitive teams trying to get the top spot in the conf playoff, look at the warriors vs the jazz and you can see the games were closer than any of these in the final. i am not even gonna go into explaining why jordan is better. it is obvious that lebron doesnt have that dominating aura at all facing any top tier teams that the east is heavily lacking of.

Drew R imo the Cavs because it should be no secret now that LeBron coasts the reg season. They really took the raptors serious that's why they didn't even let them have a chance, despite losing Lowry. They made nice moves getting pj and ibaka but it still was not enough to stop LeBron, he welcomed the challenge despite raptors being sixth in defense and offense. If we examine last meeting vs warriors, Jr Smith was out, love had limited mins like 16. Korver trade wasn't even two weeks old, they were still learning how to play with him, Jefferson played more minutes in rotation and now he's not. Derrick also, Lue likes that lineup with LeBron, Frye, korver, d will, shump/Jr like in the pacers comeback. Ppl thought the pacers were really close but the Cavs didn't break a sweat if u closely look at it. The comeback game 3, game 4 what happened? LeBron didn't even shoot more than 2 threes all he did was read the defense and get in the paint. So that tells me Cavs have a better bench than golden state and more lineups. Golden State's defense would have to stop their offense, but all dubs learned to do this year was learn to play with durant and without him, which is still very impressive but imo it will come down to can the Cavs still overcome with their offense or the warriors lock up the Cavs? I give Cleveland a slight edge because everyone can shoot the three except Tristan. Warriors gonna have to depend on Curry and KD a lot for scoring because Klay is an underrated defender who will gladly sacrifice his offense for defense. Notice he blocked Kyrie last meeting and that was the same shot Kyrie hit him with, he stayed on him.

Mow Better Lawn Service ok thats what I expected but if he beats this warriors team how does that make him goat or put him in the discussion for it since the warriors are not even the better team in your opinion

Drew R because this is the biggest offensive and defensive Juggernaut team the league has seen and will ever see. We have the 2nd and 3rd best players and former MVPs playing together. KD's impact alone has led them to lead blocks, steals, his length. LeBron just improving his 3% is just more interesting because he knew he had to improve his game to go toe to toe with.

MJ was a far more "natural" scorer who always looked to get his shot but if you compare FG %, FGA and scoring averages there isn't much in it for someone who is pass-first, MJ was a better FT shooter and LBJ a better 3 point shooter. Secondly, I think MJ is a better on-ball defender just slightly (however if you make the argument of he had to face hand-checking it also means he COULD hand-check which significantly helps your on-ball D), even so, there are many facets to defending like passing lanes, communication, reading the offensive plays and coordinating, etc. Passing and rebounding is a non-debate. I think people do LBJ a real injustice; if you strip away everything and just look at talent and basketball ability he really is the most complete player ever.

On guarding 1-5 with LeBron and not to sound like I'm down grading Center of todays game but, do you see LeBron being able to guard Ewing or unfair saying this Hakeem ( since no one in the 80s or 90s could guard him) Olajuwon? Michael Jordan all the way because LeBron never played against the MonStars. Michael Jordan had to take his team of raggedy players against the best talents NBA had to offer at that time. Michael was kidnapped and was forced to play. But he made the ultimate sacrifice and showed his selflessness by offering himself to the MonStars. LeBron can never do that. So Michael Jordan all the way.

Lebron is the greatest ever if you just focus on logical analysis. Jordan couldn't lead his team past the 1st round until he got surrounded by a bunch of all-stars. Lebron lead a bunch of scrubs to the finals in 2007. Chicago in 94 w/o Jordan won 55 games. Only 2 less(57) than in 93 WITH Jordan. When Lebron left a 60 win Cavs to "take his talents to south beach", Cavs dropped straight to last place. In fact they were bottom feeders every year without him even with Kyrie Irving. And then they shot right back up to the top immediately in Lebron's return. Going to the finals 2 years in a row and winning a championship. Jordan would not be able to do that single-handedly.

I'd argue playoff performer because its pretty close. i mean their all time per game numbers in the playoffs look like this: KING 28.0 points 8.8 rebounds 6.8 assists 1.8 steals .9 blocks MIKE 33.4 points 6.4 Rebounds 5.7 assists 2.1 steals .8 blocks And lebrons main role isn't scoring, its to facilitate. So LeBron wins in Rebounds, assists, and blocks. In all time scoring, Lebron leads Mj, and it took him less shots (in more games though) to do it. I have LeBron at #2 all time and I think ince they retire, people will look at Jordan and Bron as the 2 greatest players of all time.

If he had played throughout his career the way he has played the last 3 or 4 years, this might be a different conversation. But you can't unchoke. Dallas happened. You can't unsweep after you have gotten swept. And you can't unmeltdown or add points to a game you already played. I could even respect if LeBron played his heart out but simply lost to a better team, but 8 points and 4 turnovers from a previous scoring champ in a championship game that is pivotal? Unacceptable. If Michael had even done that once, I would concede that James would be closer to him. But Michael never did.

It's not weaker, there were less teams which in turn means the players on those teams are the absolute best available players in the world. Not players filling slots on a team. Saying Bill Russell's era was weaker is only brought up when someone mentions Jordan's rings. Jordan played against great indivdual players, but LeBron has played against much better overall teams.

If lebron was in an era where he could hand check he would be unstoppable defensively, he's one of the strongest player of all time, he'd be strong enough to control any player. The idea that one of the most physically strong players in NBA history would be worse in a more physical era is ridiculous, allowing lebron to be more physical would have made him better. Also defensive schemes were nowhere as good as they are now. Truth is lebron would have dominated back in the 90s even more than in today's NBA.

defense is not physical; it´s mentality. Look at the stealstats of John Stockton and Gary Payton playing in the same era as Jordan. Both not physical the strongest, but fighters. One thing I am sure of, the mentality of Lebron isn´t his strongest skill, if I put it mildly. I will always chose Jordan and even Bird over Lebron, just because of their killerinstinct, besides their unbelievable basketballskills. Sure Lebron will dominate physical, but he is a whiner, he is a choker in the heat of the moment.....

Jordan won a DPOY while winning MVP and scoring 32 ppg, which is INSANE. LeBron has never achieved that and will never get to an All-NBA defensive 1st team again. Jordan could guard 1-3, and LeBron could guard 1-4 in today's league where big men are way less skilled and talented than in Jordan's time. Jordan is top 5 perimeter defenders we have ever seen while being the best scorer we've ever seen. That is not human. He is by far the better scorer, defender, playoff performer, and did it in a better and tougher defensive era.

"Jordan won a DPOY while winning MVP and scoring 32 ppg, which is INSANE." "Insane"? Little Steph Curry did that last season, average 30, win the MVP, and lead the league in steals. Of CURSE, he didn't win DPOY because Jordan didn't deserve DPOY in 1988, either. Hakeem Olajuwon led the NBA in Defensive win shares and defensive rating that season, and Mark Eaton led the league in Defensive box plus/minus, with Hakeem finishing 3rd. Hakeem was the DPOY that year, but the media infatuation with Jordan was too much for Hakeem to overcome. Jordan was not even in the Top 5 in Defensive rating or defensive box plus minus, and was 3rd in defensive win shares.

You obviously did not pay attention to a single thing that I've said. The fact that I'm comparing their performances when their respective teams reached the finals, and not when they didn't, is because you cannot really blame either player for not having the ideal team built around each of them. So please, don't go about telling us about how how Jordan got swept in the first round without bothering to mention that he at least led the Bulls to a playoff spot immediately in his very first year while Lebron failed completely during his first two tries. As, I've said, it's not good to compare them in the early years of their respective careers, but you dish out garbage, you'll get garbage in return. And don't go about saying, that if Jordan was down 1-3, he would have lost, because as every honest person here knows, if it was Jordan in there with Lebron's teammates, he would never ever allow that team to be down 1-3 in the first place. The 2011 NBA finals alone is enough to see the difference between Lebron and Jordan. In that finals Lebron has Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosch against the Dallas Mavericks. They have the better record, they have home court advantage, and they were up 2-1 and what happened? They lost in six games!!! And who led the Heat? Not Lebron but Dwayne Wade!! How did Lebron do? 17.8 points per game!!!!! Every honest basketball fan here would agree that if it had been Jordan in there with Wade and Bosch, the Heat would have won, hands down. And Jordan, averaging lower than 20 points in an NBA finals series? No way man! Even a 40 year old Michael Jordan in an NBA finals would not allow himself to score lower than 25 per game against ANY TEAM.

Yeah, I'm saying that and you can't do anything about it, that's how great he is. That's just the way it is. If you have a problem with that, then go cry to your momma. Plus, I'd like to add that I won't be visiting this thread again so know that you got burned without ever having any of your further comments read by me :) Just live with that. ....................... Case in point: In 2007, the Cavaliers lost by an average of 6 points per game with James averaging 22 points. Jordan in that series would undoubtedly have taken over, and i'ts not a stretch of the imagination to see him averaging at the high 40s given, as you say, that Lebron's teammates' names can't even be recalled. If Jordan could score 40 or 50 points with Pippen and Kukoc around, imagine letting him "go wild" with a bunch of "unknowns" for his teammates. Considering the measly 6-point average differential in points, plus the DEFENSE he would have played against series MVP Tony Parker (Jordan is a 9-time All Defensive First Team awardee, plus he could play the point guard position -- they experimented with that early in his career and he scored 10 triple doubles out of 11 games as a point guard), there is no doubt that he would have sent the Spurs and ol' Timmy home, crying. P.S. I have nothing against Lebron, I consider him next to Jordan and since he is still playing like a monster (slaughtering my Celtics, sad to say), then there is still time to surpass His Airness. I just don't consider him the GOAT at this time :)

if lebron wins over the warriors super team this season, its a sealed deal for lebron. at this point youll have a guy who will not only have beaten arguably the best teams ever assembled (best record warriors and this years team) 2x, you will have a guy that will have likely eclipsed jordan in almost every single statisical total by the he retires. Now we can sit here and argue all day about who had tougher competiton when and where and how, but its unfair to both sets of players. bottom line, if by the time lebron is finished, the only thing jordan will have over lebron is rings and finals mvps, you are going to have to concede to lebron being the king. if youre going to sit here and tell me that those 2 things carry more weight than stats, 6/6, etc. then you will have to confess that jordan is #2 to bill russell and i KNOW no one is gunna do that. so either bill russell is the best or lebron is (if he wins it this year over the warriors)

You're wrong. That's like saying Emmit Smith is better than Barry Sanders just because he played longer. Jordan was better in literally every category except passing, and Jordan was still no slouch, as a passer. Jordan was more technically flawless, more skilled, better scorer, and way better on defense. Imagine Jordan in today's era with today's shoes. Jordan would be averaging well over 40 a game. Almost all of Jordan's single game records beat Lebron. Even in assists. Jordan has the highest PER of any player in NBA history.

Scoring: MJ earned 10 scoring titles in an era where defenders were far more physical. Nuff said. Passing: LeBron edges this but only because MJ relinquished the PG spot. He averaged 8 APG in '89. (Also, let's not forget assists are contingent on your teammate making the shot.) Rebounding: LeBron's better, which is suppose to be the case given his position & size. Defense: MJ - DPOY, All-Defensive 1st Team 9x, 3 steals titles... to LBJ's runner-up, AD1st 5x, 0 stls titles Post / Footwork: MJ > LBJ Ball-handling: MJ > LBJ PER: Jordan (27.9) edges LBJ (27.6), and expect LBJ's average to decrease as he gets older MVPs: Jordan (5); LBJ (4) Playoff MJ had tougher competition in the 80s-90s Eastern Conference (Bucks, Celtics, Pistons, Knicks, Magic, Heat, Pacers) compared to the weaker current EC. In the Finals, Jordan won 6 FMVPs in 6 appearances. LBJ has lost Finals MVPs to Dirk, Kawhi (a 22 year old non-All Star at the time), and Iggy. 2016 was an historic performance (leading both teams in 5 major stat categories) but the 2011 meltdown and 2014 beatdown cannot be glossed over. When did he average 37 points? In what time frame? Also, if Jordan had more skill why does Lebron take the edge in *[1] scoring* (higher percentage on both 2pt and 3pt shots), *[2] playmaking* (one of all time bests), *[3] rebounding* (yes, he is a SF, but MJ is a SG, so shouldn't MJ have better shooting, but he does not), *[4] blocks* (as we all know) .... while Jordan is only better at *[1] steals* and *[2] free-throw shooting* ??
@AJ-sl7be
@AJ-sl7be 7 жыл бұрын
Shlomo Zelman Jordan averaged 37 in the 86-87 season which was basically his second season in the league. Scoring: Easily MJ. 10 Scoring titles, 37ppg in a season, 41ppg in a finals. Jordan didn't need a 3point shot. (most players in 80's to 90's didn't.) Jordan is a much better mid-range and free throw shooter. Lebron is below average at both. Rebounding: Slightly Lebron. A SF averaging 7 boards isn't amazing. Larry bird averaged 10 for his career despite being less athletic. Jordan with 6 rebounds is above average, while Lbj is the size of a bigman only averaging 7. Passing: Definitely Lebron who averaged 8.7 assist for the season, and 7 for his career. Micheal could definitely pass as well. The season he played Point Guard he put up 32/8/8/3/1 on 54% from the field. He also out-assisted Magic in the finals putting up 31ppg and 11.4 assist on 56% fg. However, MJ only averages 5 assist for his career. Steals: By far MJ with 3 steals titles no debate. Blocks: Tie. Both average the same amount of blocks and Jordan is the best Shot-Blocking Guard ever (Dwyane Wade is close). Lebron can block almost any player in the league.

Michael Jordan is way more efficient than many scorers, including Kobe, but (again) Lebron averages more points per attempt), so overall Lebron scores more efficiently than Jordan (and so do, for example, Curry and CP3). It sounds laughable, but scoring titles aren't very meaningful. Why? Suppose that a player averaged 40 attempts and 50 points (per game). This player will be the scoring leader, but obviously he is NOT the most efficient scorer. .... Well, Jordan might have had the better scoring efficiency in his era, but (as I showed in my previous reply) Lebron scores more efficiently (because Lebron, on average, scores more than Jordan on the same number of shot-attempts). You also said that Lebron rebounds more, but you're emphasizing that there isn't anything to be proud because Lebron is a SF, however when you talk about Jordan saying that Jordan is a by far better mid-range and free-throw shooter you [either on purpose or not, but you] don't recall/mention that Jordan is a SG and therefore there isn't anything amazing or surprising that Jordan is a better mid-range and free-throws (compared to Lebron who is a SF). There is a name for this - bias.

Khan, based on individual quotes from all time greats, and other analysis, zone (not hand-checking or other stuff) makes it the hardest for an offensive player to score. Even Jordan said (I found the quote) "I never liked zones .... and with them you can eliminate a lot of the stars making things happen" (maybe MJ knows better when it comes to the toughest thing for a scorer than a random person?) Also, Kobe, KD, Duncan and Shaq testified to this affect as well. Also, imagine a player like Lebron back then. Yes, he would be hand-checked and physically guarded, but without being afraid to foul offensively (because charges weren't very common to say the least) he can just power his way through. (I have no doubt that a powerful and athletically gifted player like Lebron can do so.) What if Lebron gets double teamed? On a double team the second defender cannot just help (a double team was legal only when both of the defenders are aggressively pursuing the offensive player), and I'm sure that with the kind of play-making ability and court-vision that Lebron has (more than twice Jordan ever dreamed), Lebron will be able to get the ball to the open shooter. So, Khan, please don't overstate the NBA back then and don't understate the NBA today. Today's defense is actually a lot harder when it comes to eliminating a superstar from scoring.

I don't think the defensive three seconds rule makes it easier to play defence. It makes it harder. The idea was to open up the lane to make it easier for scorers.

It's Lebron. The versatility, sustained excellence, ability to guard 1-5 all at a high level, the team building (a credit, since they both needed exceptional teammates to win, except LeBron built teams while mike left them for baseball or tore them apart). At the end of the day, I'll take Lebron's all-around super efficient game, 15 deep playoff runs, 4-5 titles in 9-10 Finals appearances along with every cumulative record in the books over Mike's 6 for 6, 10 exceptional, all-world years (and 5 "meh" years), and his scoring dominance on high volume shooting. Lebron was a builder and Michael a destroyer, that's what tilts me towards LeBron. At this point it's personal choice. Lebron isn't done, and he may make it undeniable at some point, or he could tarnish his legacy a la Tiger Woods, but "right now" I prefer the sustained excellence over the erratic dominance.

I don't think any differently. The warriors simply defended their home court, the same thing that the Cavs now get the chance to do. There are still two remaining games in Oracle, where the Cavs have a history better than any other team by far, to steal it back. It certainly doesn't look good for Cleveland, but there's a reason the final five games are played, as was evidenced last year when exactly ZERO people gave them a chance to win down 3-1. The fact is that the Cavs stil have the best player, and they still have a high quality rotation 1-8, just as the warriors do. When this series shifts back to Cleveland, where the whistles and crowd will favor the Cavs, things may change dramatically. They also may not change and the Cavs may lose the series, but that doesn't take away from Lebron's case as the best ever. Because he may lose to the best team ever, does not mean he cannot be considered the best player ever. Put MJ on this Cavs team- do they stand any better chance of beating the warriors? Even if you feel that they do, would they ultimately? And if they lost to this warriors team, would MJ still be the best ever in your mind? There's a reason that championship rings are given to the entire organization, not just the team's best player. The fact remains that championships are a TEAM statistic and Lebron has competed for more than any recent player other than James Jones. To get to that stage at all with some of his teams is a larger accompishment in my mind than Jordan winning against a mediocre Sonics team. The two games that Lebron won in 2015, without his second and third leading scorers, is a far bigger accomplsihment than Jordan winning against any team he faced. There was a REASON that no player had ever won a finals game without that season's second and third best scorers- because it's next to impossible, and Lebron did it TWICE in the same series. Jordan never did anything in any series that is as singularly impressive as that, yet Lebron lost the series so it's counted as a negative against his career accomplishments? let's use logic people, the myth of MJ only going 6/6 because he was a basketball god that will never be duplicated is dogma, and the sheep who for decades believed that he did something immortal should wake up. They are missing one hell of a show from Lebron, KD, and others....

David Windell Sir, which would be your definition of "sustained excellence", 3-5 or 6-0 ?
@davidwindell
@davidwindell 7 жыл бұрын
I think that it's reasonable to say that someone exhibits "sustained excellence" when they have a career run that begins with a 20+ game improvement to the team's record, increased winning until making the playoffs the third year, never once losing in the first round, taking a team with NOBODY providing support to FINALS, then in year 6 beginning a SEVEN-year run of making it to the Championship matchup each and every season, winning in almost half those years, with no indication that the run will end in the near term, especially with the player lauded as overwhelmingly the best in the game during that stretch (in today's "hot take" culture where everything except this one fact is debated ad infinitum). Compare this to 8 years of mediocre team results that includes SEVERAL playoff misses and first round losses, a spurt of three straight titles, a complete disappearance from the sport as a whole (for whatever reason), a return for half a season (plenty of time to get in game shape, especially since he played a PROFESSIONAL sport while away) ending in a playoff loss before EVEN getting to the championship series and not even losing to the eventual champions, three more years of titles, another disappearing act, and a failed return that results in "good player" statistics for a couple years and 40 something team wins. I'm not saying MJ had a bad career in ANY sense of the word, but when comparing the two, especially the first 13-15 seasons, there's absolutely no doubt that Lebron's teams showed significantly more consistent, SUSTAINED success than did MJs. This is simply not debateable. Sir.

He's in the conversation. Kobe's a better defender and scorer. 3rd all time in scoring and 9 time NBA All-Defensive 1st Team. i'll give you rebounding and assists. iq is debatable, and i checked basketball reference and Kobe has 28 made shots to win (including playoffs) in the last 5 seconds 4th quarter/OT to Lebron's 15. I'm still playing with the shot finder tool to get percentages but Kobe did take a lot more last shots. Also at 10 sec Kobe gets to 38 while Lebron gets to 20 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
