I feel for Monte. He's a highly intelligent and respected esports figure, and has been talked down by toxic humans on Reddit. It is unreasonable to sacrifice the integrity of competition. I don't know about you guys, but the high level of competition is THE chief reason I love and follow and watch the LCK. As a fan, it's something that I would never want to be tolerated. Competition is the reason your fans exist.

The downtime for LEC is because of the rule "every team quilified for the MSI has to play playoffs on same patch as MSI" .... that rule makes a lot of sense for competitive integrity and wouldnt be possible without the pauses as every region has different formats. This is the measure to synchronize them.

I really like the parallel Monte drew between the NHL experiencing troubles with COVID and not allowing pros to go to the Olympics and having college players go instead, it relates a lot to how the LCK management is failing to handle this situation with teams having to play sub rosters due to COVID and the absolute absence of communication and effective decision making and compromise.
@aruhtahc
@aruhtahc 2 жыл бұрын
It's a little bit more nuanced there though. The NHL teams have in the past several years not wanted their players to participate in the Olympics due to the risk of injury outside of the league. Meaning these players would not paid by the team if they were to go compete (though, for example, Russian players would still complete regardless). In this case, removing the built in break benefits the NHL teams and is likely something they will want to keep going forward.

The thing about T1 is that they're playing these types of comps because these comps are the strongest in the meta. But T1 also have the biggest champion pool in the world. Faker + Keria specifically can literally play anything. And those two are the brains of the team. So as long as they can play anything, then T1 can play any style.

In MAD vs RGE series, especially game 5, Inspired actually ganked for Odoamne, did more than help Odoamne to succeed, but Odoamne still choked (the entire series against a rookie). Give such a huge lead to a better toplaner and they'll run home with that game. Thats been my problem with Odoamne in playoffs even back in H2k, he doesnt adapt fast enough within a series, new patch or a new champ. How fking obvious was it Armut would keep picking Wukong/Gnar (he was a rookie btw) and Odoamne still couldnt outperform Armut? Reminds me when Soaz gapped Odo in H2k vs OG, then Wunder gapping him in SPY vs H2k, not really able to accept himself he cant weakside (as good as the KR tops in GP vs Gnar match up) in 5 consecutive games. See the pattern of choking in bo5s? Don't blame your jungler or your team, you were the worst player in RGE in Spring finals, own it up. That Spring finals was a clear SOLO LANE gap. This "20 seconds" bs is such a lame excuse from Odoamne choking all those playoffs games, he was just bad even more so in those Jayce games. FNC mentioning ego players in RGE wanting to be a star, picking Jayce and doing nothing, it checks out. Heck, watch Odo's Ornn game and it will blind you how bad he played, so how much more with a carry. He was outperformed by Adam and Armut from individual laning, there was no excuse when RGE even gave him counterpicks. Hans is even middle of the pack in adc resources for both splits, he was last in gold% in Spring playoffs, got put on "cc adc" like Senna/Varus just to provide more utility for Larssen/Odoamne who constantly plays to look like stars on their "Jayce, Lucian, Tristana", taking more resources when they cant carry. Inspired was clear stand out jungler for the entire year HOWEVER, RGE had such a bad pick/ban vs MAD, their read was so shit. They self banned Hans' Jinx (which Carzzy is average on, Hans on Jinx was one of the best games RGE had in playoffs). Then RGE converted Inspired to "Elyoya jr" instead of banning the Udyr/Volibear, Gnar/Wukong to make Elyoya/Armut (take note, rookies) uncomfortable. They allowed the MAD rookies to be comfortable, made Inspired "play a different playstyle" that suits MAD, but not RGE. The best players in RGE, Hans, Inspired and Trymbi were used to bandaid the choking solo lanes, end of story. One cannot really excuse the choking that happened in Odoamne and Larssen, they were the clear worst performers in 2021 RGE playoffs, heck even Trymbi performed better. Take note, Larssen had counterpicks vs Humanoid and Humanoid still fking gapped him to oblivion in lane. Playing Tristana/Lucian and doing fk all? Another point was RGE 2021 couldnt stick to their identity of WEAKSIDE top and MAGE mid cause RGE solo lanes also have their own hubris. If Larssen just stuck with the Ori/Viktor in Spring Finals, RGE might have won at least one more game to become Spring champions.

I respect the opinion of these two gentlemen but I’d also like the perspective of a Korean. Someone on the other side that can go “well ok your NHL did that but they’re not Korean, we’re not them, and we’re not American.” You know, just so it doesn’t entirely make it seem like “we’re level headed and these Asians are just off their rocker.” I’ve learned through living life that as much as you think your world is right, someone else lives in a world seemingly entirely different from yours who feels just as right in their place.

I don't get what's supposed to be so funny about the composition of the painting. Instead of just doing a portrait of a stoic sailor guy steering his ship, the artist turned it into a movie poster where the ship itself is shown in the foreground but from a distant 3rd perspective so you can see the whole ship. Compare it to the Master & Commander movie poster, the poster has a clear break between Russel Crowe and the ship with the title in-between too but the painting is a fairly seamless combination of the two images. I'd say the issue with it is that the sailor looks like a fairly modern day fisherman yet the ship looks just like the one from Master & Commander, so the ship is much too old and fancy to match the simple fisherman.

The funny thing is T1 was the one who spear headed this. No one was playing Vex/Ahri (LPL was very late with their patch and LEC/LCS thought ahri was bait). Then look and behold ahri/vex are S tier. T1 was the only team to priortize Jayce. Now other teams are prioritizing Jayce. You can't say oh T1 is playing meta when they are the ones ahead of curve dictating the meta. Teams dropped Lee Sin in favor of xin/Viego/J4/ and Oner played it as if it was S tier. Now teams are priortizing Lee Sin as the best jungler in all regions. That's why they have no merit. T1 isn't modelling some other team (notice LPL picks Galio a ton and T1 hasn't prioritized it one bit) from other regions so no clue what they are talking about.

I understand bringing up the whole asterisk in T1's case cause yes 3 of their wins were because COVID played a role, BUT it shouldn't take much if anything away because of another team or org's policies on Covid compared to T1's. Joe has been clear that they take less risks and are more strict with it and the players are on board and it shows. No Covid or health issues aside from a staff member scare earlier in the year and that's it. Honestly, how can you fault a team performing at a high level for staying healthy and try to nudge in the "IF'S, BUT's and MAYBE's". They were strict with themselves and performed very well, they deserve to go 18-0 and any asterisk is only for fact's sake, in my opinion. Like yes they were 18-0, but these 3 games were affected in this way because of Covid, just to be clear, kind of thing.
@Anlich
@Anlich 2 жыл бұрын
Cause its a record which you can't take without a pinch of salt. It's like someone doing a record tournament-winning run with their greatest competitor missing (is it then the greatest torunament run?). T1 reaps the rewards - but in a competitional sense, any idea of this being the greatest LCK run or whatever is compromised. It becomes harder to compare to other leagues and historical results.
@prawn8536
@prawn8536 2 жыл бұрын
@@Anlich Yes, it would still be in the talk for the greatest run. A team cannot be faulted for another team not making it to the tournament (as per your example). If they were there greatest competitor, they should be able to get there or be healthy. I totally understand, but it's not their fault for other teams not being able to discipline themselves (also org staff, cause that can play a crucial role in it all). Will there forever be an asterisk next to it? Most likely, but it's basically unwarranted. When it came to the second match against Gen G, everyone (casters, analysts and players alike) all agreed it didnt matter if Ruler was there or not. The first one might have mattered much more so with 3 subs, but even prior to that, Gen G's chemistry was nowhere near T1's, let's be real. And the Fredit game is just a shitshow. 5 players all getting Covid? You can't even put that in the asterisk, that's just lazy and irresponsible, imo. Personally, I think T1 2-0's Gen G both times cause Ruler wasn't the focal point earlier of his team in the split and only partly in the second half. BUT I totally understand your point and seeing it from that side of things, it just sucks that T1 and their record year get "punished" (reputation of the run-wise) for other teams' laziness or lack of discipline for health concerns in these times. No one bags on Fnatic's perfect run even tho the LEC was hot garbage in 2015. They were stomping a region that outside of them were sub-par, but T1 gets more shit than them. Feelsbadman

The ones I found could make it to challenger were coached closely by like their brothers and such , but in the same breath I coached my brother so that's not out of the norm. I tend to think that women have other options in life that we men tend to not have or at least consider when were in that "basement dwelling" mode therefore we feel more comfortable wasting time on these imaginary "ranks" and achievements.

on average, men don't give a fuck if *a lot* of people like them but at the same time have *that one thing* they consider themselves to be *very good* at and take pride in it. For women it's the opposite. Again, on average since nothing socials-related can be said in terms of absolutes, the best we can do is "general tendency". I don't know to what level this is enforced by society but teenagers pretty much do that: women start socializing a whole lot more and men start hard-focusing on whatever it is they decided to be great at. On ranks and achievements being "imaginary", being good at LoL is no less real than being good at football. As with anything, it depends on how much value society assigns to that discipline. Being good at math is laughed upon in latin america but being a great football player makes you pretty much a celebrity in your local area, i'd bet the opposite happens in say, India (talking out of my ass here, i really don't know how much Indians value maths nor football).

@@m4ng4n When I'm talking about imaginary rewards , im not dissing the process , there IS value in becoming Challenger in game. As you said yourself The experience of learning , realizing what kind of discipline one needs to be at top of the leaderboards , is probably invaluable and 90% of the population cannot replicate it. There are Skills you learn that ARE applicable to real life , mainly analysis and Learning approaches, but Nobody really takes on ladder thinking about "developing" discipline and skills. They just want to be "cool" , "wouldn't it be cool if I was one of the best at this game". Ranking for the sake of ranking up is just a carrot on a stick. It has no value. Winning for the sake of winning has no value, Challenger can win against bronze all the time, doesn't mean it's productive.

T1 played vs 4 teams ( 2 were GenG) with covid issues They have no problem with adapting to meta, this team was one game from world's finals Each player has a champion ocean (guarantee they play more champs than nearly any player) They have won games on macro alone, they won't just suddenly become bad at macro if meta shifts. They play their meta style because the meta isn't changing. And it's not even like they haven't mixed it up? They can play through any lane, bully any team and play any weakside at the top of the world.

I can't understand why Monte is praising Drive to Survive so much if he said he watched F1 last year. Sure, the first three seasons as a whole were good, but this last season was absolute crap. They didn't even try to represent reality. Random radio put in out of context, straight up getting facts wrong on who finished where at what race, not even including the moments with the most hype (how the hell they didn't include Alonso's defense baffles me). Just all around crap this season. Stop ignoring the elephant in the room Monte.

They never tried to represenent reality. They always used out of contexts radio and quotes, got facts wrong, made weird cuts and didn't include alot of crucial events. The difference is that this season was packed compared to the other and they failed to tell their substories and give due to the hype overall story of the championship.

@@Anlich It's true that they never tried to represent reality, but literally everyone last year was saying Netflix must be having a field day at every race since there were so many storylines, so much action, so much hype. All they had to do was pick a few races, build up the context and voilà, job done. But no, they somehow messed up what was arguably the best year of F1 ever, certainly the best in decades. It's as if they gave an intern who had never heard of F1 before the job.

@ Monty F1 is a fysicly very demanding you wouldn't be able to drive it due to insane g-forces pulling on your neck in the corners. The physical element is one reason why you dont see female drivers, the other is getting sponsors as a female drivers in lower cathegories is brutally hard and unless daddy has a lot of money ur not racing without one. Jamie Chadwick (one of the best female drivers) did some practice sessions in F1 as she was waaayy of her teammate.

@mcchickenz hinestly there are competitive female drivers that win races against male counter parts that would join f1 in the future, their biggest problem is funding. Karting is expensive as is, but going into F4 - F3 - F2 is insane. As girls dont get backing from sponsors (even when they clearly show talent) they almost really get the chance to compete and prove themselves in these lower cathegories and that imo is the biggest issue.

People don't know how to properly treat their money/income. There are so many people out there with this problem, like holy shit. If at least 1/4 of those people started doing something half decent with their extra money, we could've been living on the moon right now. And I'm not even talking about overly rich people who can throw 100k$ around on a daily basis in USA. In other countries its even more obvious. I live in a country where 400$ a month is okay. We have people who get 5000$ a month and they have like 5 different cars parked outside their apartment. Why? What for? And they're living in an apartment with two rooms, for example. They have proper clearly visible ways to make their own life better, yet they're buying yet another car.

F1 also has the problem, even compared to esports, of arbitrary scoring. In league you win a game if the enemy nexus explodes, and you can have seasons and tournaments based around this factuality. The only thing that could be unfair are bugs resulting in chronobreaks or remakes which have to be done on things that are ultimately not quantifiable perfectly. In F1, the scoring system is ultimately made up, and you can lose or gain points in the competition by dropping out of a race through no fault of your own if an enemy teams driver hits you, or there is a problem with the wheel gun release because of the timer they added, or because a safety car allows someone on a different tire strategy get closer to you for free, or who stayed out on the same strategy a faster pitstop. It's entertaining but I feel you can't take the championship THAT seriously, hell Lewis almost won last year because he had more luck up till that point, then he lost because suddenly the luck turned to Max again (who I do think deserved it more overal, but still it's just so arbitrary)

Regarding the F1 analogy about female drivers, there simply wast a competitive enough female racer in the feeder series that lead to F1, there were a couple that drove the F2 championship but didnt do good enough to win or even conted for the championship. On the physical side of thing the problem is sustained lateral G forces over 5g that resault in a huge downfall of pace during the race in even profesional racing drivers of other series, when they do a practice run in a F1 car, all F1 drivers have unebilably thick necks...

Monte is a lowkey T1 hater. why? at his point of view, he thinks that T1 can't adapt to meta changes. T1 is also damn good at macro plays. If the opponent wins the lanes. T1 will just win the macro. they don't sacrifice something without return. and even if you look at the game state and felt like they are losing. T1 is still ahead in gold. So why so negative against T1? dude, they just made history.

Thanks Monte for discussing the LCK scene and sorry that the league community has targeted you yet again, for stupid reasons. Overall, a great episode and I will definitely check out Adam Curtis! The female portion was pretty...oof though, but it's not an easy topic to tackle. I'm a Millennial and I've been playing video games since I was six. I've noticed the numbers increasing over the years but the reason why I think there are so few female pro leagues, is because it's not profitable and the extreme harassment/violence/pressure. It is nice to see more game companies sponsoring female Twitch streamers but again, it's because the industry sees them not as fantastic gamers (which they are) but more for the sex appeal. I don't think it will improve until culture stops viewing women as sex objects, inferior, etc. and treatment is improved.
