Lecture by Joseph Shulam "Heretical Rabbis of the Talmud: 2nd Century Witnesses to the Power of Yeshua's Gospel" Presented
Saturday, February 8, 2020, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Joseph Shulam, a trained orthodox rabbi and leader of the messianic congregation Netivyah , will explain the ancient Jewish document called “the Talmud.” He will invite us inside that ancient text to introduce us to some of the famous early rabbis who were branded as “heretics.” Join us as Joseph tells inspiring stories of these “heretical rabbis” who put their trust in Jesus, and how some of the earliest Jewish rabbis were won to Jesus as Lord and Messiah. Then lean in as Joseph closes by telling some of the amazing conversions of modern-day rabbis happening in Israel and around the Jewish world.
Joseph Shulam is a Hebrew Scholar and Christian Minister in Jerusalem.
This video is part of the Lanier Library Lecture Series. A series devoted to bringing world class lectures to benefit the community of all those who might be interested.
I am indebted to the generosity of the library to allow me to share these videos of theirs. Please support them by visiting their website for more information and resources:

Bio info:
Joseph Shulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1946 and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1948 just before the establishment of the State. He grew up in Jerusalem where he was introduced to the New Testament in high school. Joseph immediately identified with Yeshua, which eventually led him to faith in the Messiah. As a result, he was rejected by his family and traveled to the United States to finish high school in Georgia. He returned to Jerusalem and studied Biblical Archaeology and Bible at Hebrew University. He returned to the U.S to study New Testament and Chemistry at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he met his wife Marcia. They have two children and two grandchildren.
In 1969 they started a congregation in Tel-Aviv. In 1972 Joseph began 3 years of rabbinical college studies, followed by more graduate study at Hebrew University. In 1981 he established the Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry and in 1982 purchased a building on Narkis Street, the first for a Messianic Jewish congregation in Jerusalem. This building was renovated and expanded with support from around the world. It was dedicated in March 2015.
Joseph has lectured extensively around the world and has encouraged disciples in most European countries, as well as Finland, Bulgaria, Russia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, of course.
Joseph has written and partnered in writing several books, including commentaries on Romans, Acts and Galatians. He also authored "Hidden Treasures: The First Century Jewish Way of Understanding the Scriptures"; "Planted in the House of the Lord" "God, Israel, and the Church"; "Starting a Messianic Jewish Yeshiva" and "Speak Tenderly to Jerusalem".

@Issac BROTT Daniel 7 13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. 14 And there was given Him dominion and glory and a Kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His Kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. 15 “I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near unto one of those who stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me and made me know the interpretation of the things: 17 ‘These great beasts, which are four, are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall take the Kingdom and possess the Kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’

@HomeFirstAppraisal.com not that I am aware of. The purpose of animal sacrifices was to point to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. So in my opinion based on Scripture there is no reason for God to reinitiate animal sacrifices when the reality has already taken place. This is the argument the author of Hebrews makes. At the time it was written some were beginning to drift back to the shadows represented in the temple services but all pointed to the reality brought about through Messiah Yeshua.
@fleetwd1
@fleetwd1 3 жыл бұрын
@HomeFirstAppraisal.com the Disciples writings reveal the Temple to be Jesus' body both his physical body and the body of believers. The attempt of some to insist on a 3rd Temple to fulfill prophecies yet unfulfilled to Israel seem to ignore the testimony of New Testament writers and how they interpret things. The Book of Hebrews, Jesus's statements regarding the Temple, Peter's referring to believers making up the temple, etc. etc. I find little evidence that would suggest any need for animal sacrifices once the reality of one sacrifice replacing the continual sacrifices of the old system takes place. If God allows a 3rd temple to be built it will only be as a deception for those who think it is necessary. Jesus is the reality of every Prophecy including Ezekiel's. He is the Word made flesh and he dwelt/literally Tabernacled/pitched his tent among us. The language used concerning Jesus and his role of fulfilling prophecy is unmistakable. The second temple disappointed those who were alive to be present in Solomon's Temple. but Prophecies said the later temple would be greater. the presence of God visited the 2nd Temple clothed in humanity in the person of God's Son. There can be no greater purpose served than this that has happened in the 1st century AD.

Impressed with all but his issues on clean and unclean animals for Gentiles. Why? Because PAUL writes that it is okay to eat anything in the market, except if it causes your brother to stumble (because the brother's conscience is WEAK). Also the conclusion reached by the author of Acts (i.e. Luke, the close friend and associate of Paul) is that by this vision (the one Peter had), GOD declared all foods clean! How in heaven and earth could they miss this?
@tradarcher7311
@tradarcher7311 3 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Kirk except that’s not what Paul said. That’s what english translators with confirmation bias want you to think. Look at the greek. The word Paul uses for food is actually a greek work for meat, specifically Kosher type meats. The issue Paul is addressing is clean meats sacrificed to other gods and if you could or could not eat it. Which is why it is mentioned don’t be a atumbling block. Look at a map, the city states where Paul sent his letters were 1,000’s of miles from Jerusalem, hardly the center for Jewish population, who would stumble? God didn’t change his mind, pigs are still walking garbage cans and unfit for food.

@@tradarcher7311 Frankly, though, I don't know many translators who have a "confirmation bias." They are interested in accurate translation. The big exception I've seen goes the other way, with big supporters of Israel (though I do support her), bending over backwards for pro-Israel apologetics, and politics. I have no dog in the fight.

Malcolm Kirk if you want to see bias in a translation read James 2:2 and see how many say assembly or congregation. The actual word greek word is Synagogue. It is used 37 times in the NT, it is translated Synagogue 36 times. The ONLY time this is translated assembly is when James is giving instructions on how to behave. The implication is new believers were expected to go to the Synagogues to learn, specifically Torah. Just like in Acts 15:21. New believers were expected to follow the 4 rules for admission to the group then learn the rest of the commandments on Sabbath in the Synagogues. That verse is usually left off.

Great learning!!! We must remember, that our LORD is a Jew from the tribe of Juda and HE was the perfect Rabbi. We need to have knowledge of the old testament in order to understand the new one. ABBA never eliminated the Jewish people from salvation; many important Jews during JESÚS time follow him, including Jews from the Sanedrín. It's also true, that churches don't teach much of the word of GOD. Those pastors must answer our LORD soon. Our savior will return very soon to stablish HIS kingdom. Ah, almost forgot, our Messiah kept the Sabbath and all the feast of the LORD!!

I love this guy! I no longer identify as as a Christian, but rather a Messianic Gentile who follows Christ!
@fleetwd1
@fleetwd1 2 жыл бұрын
we should all identify that way. there has been a fairly rapid drift away from that thinking. we are followers of the Way which Jews regard as a sect according to Paul in Acts. Scripture comes from Hebrews written in several languages Hebrew Greek Aramaic and a few others. Known as the oracles of God. first century writings included mostly also from Hebrew thinkers. We owe everything to the root and the original branches.

Is there a difference between christian and messianic ? Christ and messiah mean the same thing after all
@fleetwd1
@fleetwd1 2 жыл бұрын
@@fightclub1164 while the meaning of the two words, one Greek, the other Hebrew, should carry the same meaning a person would have to be dull of understanding to not know how Christianity quickly sought to distance itself from it's Hebrew roots. many Christians have no idea the term they embrace as an honorable term began as a slanderous term which the original believers did not think of themselves as being. They knew their Hebrew roots far better than todays average Christian. Some think of Jesus as having come to start another religion rather than someone who completed the purpose given to Israelites. Messianic believer's are much more mindful of the roots in which we Gentiles are ingrafted. How many Christians know the Law as meaning Hebrew Scripture as did those in the 1st century. When they write quoting the Law and it comes from the Psalms, the Prophets or the books of Moses? How many Christians have as high a view of the Law as they profess having toward Scripture? a correct reading of Paul shows how he has a great regard for the Law which is holy just and good. they are the oracles of God. the problem is not with the Law but with us. The law as a standard is never lost sight of with Paul. He only opposes the Law as a method of becoming righteous. The righteousness that justifies mankind is provided by God in the person of His Son. Who is God's Word made flesh. It tabernacled among us. As God's presences tabernacled among the Israelites after the Covenant on Mount Sinai and in Solomon's Temple until the exile. that presence which was absent from the 2nd Temple even though Prophets promised a greater presence would appear. it did so in Human form but it was veiled in humanity and unrecognized even though Hebrew Scriptures foretold it. So yes there is a difference not in word meaning but in the practice of understanding the Hebrew roots.

@@fleetwd1 the law now is christ that dwells within a follower of christ. I agree many born into a christian family call themselves christian, not knowing that christianity means to "walk in spirit" , walk in the supernatural, experience of the living God. We are under grace which is above law. And its the work of Spirit(christ) that dwells in us to clean us, sanctify us. As bible says "christ perseveres in us". Is law good , yes. But our focus is Christ

This rabbi just blew my mind. Wow! Lol He cracked me up talking about taking things apart because he has to know things, and not just believing what others say. And how he can't unbelieve something once he believes it. Makes me think of myself. God bless this man. I would argue the dietary law argument from Mark 7:18-20 though

And some of us have to give up everything to become followers of Christ. Thank you for reminding us that Christ gave up to bring us back to him. Most of what we have, He gave it to us. For Him and for our sake, it's not a big ask. Lord help us all. A renewed Easter message. Nothing we can give up for discipleship, that has the same value with that that we give up in our lives. We gain more.

actually in Lev 11. Something to think about. Yehovah is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is our Susserein King. When A King makes a law he cannot break it, read the book of Ester. watch Rico Cortes. If Yehovah break one of His commandments he cannot be God!! Yeshua came to bring us back to His Father, Watch Identity crisis Jim Staley if you want to know why Yeshua really had to die!! Remember it was foretold by the prophets that we would see the Tanak as a strange thing and that our forefathers would inherit lies and futile things. Shabbat Shalom

Find myself drawn to Jewish history, especially dead sea scrolls, the Essences, Order of Melchizedek , the corruption of the calendar and clarity of prophecy.
