LED Rear Turn Signal Install & Fender Mod: 2018 Ninja 1000 / Z1000SX

In this video, I'll show you how to install aftermarket rear turn signals. I also show a simple modification to the rear fender for a more compact look. Stay tuned till the end to see a comparison between the stock lighting and the upgraded lighting.
How-To Remove and Install the Rear Fender: • 2018 Ninja 1000 / Z100...
Important Note: (This only applies if you are modifying the wires on your stock signals, which I was doing to add a connection for my integrated tail light) Slide the hardware (adapter plates, washer, nut, and rubber boot) onto the wiring BEFORE you start adding additional connections. The additional connections can make it hard or impossible to slide the hardware on.

That’s not something that I’ve looked into. I’m really happy with the integrated turn signals in the fairings of the bike. They’re visible from the front and the sides of the bike.

Jonathan, love your videos - very useful indeed! I recently purchased a 2013 Ninja 1000 ABS, with only 2,000 miles and I am slowly modifying it. So, your videos are a great help. Also, I would love to install the LED Blaster-X Tail Light you have, will you be doing a video on that as well?

Thanks, I’m glad to hear you are liking the videos! I recorded an installation video for the Blaster X tail light, but parts of the footage were somehow lost! I’ve tried to put a video together with what I have, but I’m missing too many critical steps. The videos that I have for the rear signal installation should be sufficient to get the tail light out. Message me before you do the install and I can provide some tips on hooking up the new light.

Thank you for your response, will do... Have another question; why replace the entire rear turn signals, would it not be easier just to replace the rear turn signal bulb with LED, especially since you have the relay already? Kindly provide me with the bulb type of the rear turn signal which you removed. I will try to replace the bulb with LED. By any chance, would the Philips 194 LED fit in factory rear turn signal socket? Thank you in advance!

I just checked the stock rear signal bulb. It appears to be a WY10W. I looked around online (quickly) and did not see any LED replacements. You may want to spend more time looking. I preferred to replace the entire rear signal in order to get a more streamlined rear fender. I also knew that the Rizoma LEDs are great quality, extremely bright, and that the light color matches the turn signal color in my CustomLED Blaster X tail light.

By the way, I found out somewhere after spending hours on line that the LED bulbs are the same for the front and the rear. So I ordered 2 pack and they are in! Now waiting for that relay. Also Blaster-X owes you; because of you mine is on the way and should be here by Friday!! Thanks for the inspiration! 9/2/18: Just finished installing the Blaster X and also used Inertia LED RY10W LED bulbs for both front and rear turn signals. Whatsmore, in my 2013 Ninja 1000 ABS, I did not have to use the relay!! Apparently it is already LED ready. While installing Blaster X, on a Sunday night, I called and left a message due to some confusion in how to program it. Well, the owner of Custom LEDs called me immediately and walked me through the programming. This was awesome!!!

Hey Jonathan, When you use your Front brake your tail light will Start to Flash and then become normal. But does it do the same if you use the foot Break (back break)? Thanks for your effort Tyler :)

Hey Tyler! Yes, both front and rear brake will trigger the same brake effect. On mine, it’s set to strobe and then go steady.

Is there any reason that you bought the harness from custom led instead of just cutting the one for the oem signals? Is it so you’re able to reinstall the oem parts if needed? Also did you have to cut the harness from the blaster x and install female terminals or does it come with those ? Ps great videos.

I generally try to avoid making any permanent modifications to the bike, or the parts that I take off. So I could have used the connectors off the stock signals, but I preferred to just add my own. I did have to add the connectors to the Blaster-X. I can’t remember offhand what the terminals looked like on the Blaster-X, so I don’t remember if I had to cut anything off.

I had actually received my blaster-x a few hours after leaving this comment. It comes with Kawasaki oem connection. I actually purchased the oem harness and oem y splitter from custom led after seeing that so I won’t have to modify the blaster x either. Thanks again for the videos and attention to detail

Hi Jonathan...thanks for the informative videos. Can you please advise how to change the rear tire hugger (v shaped plastic covering the Tyre) below the rear fender. I just got my new ninja 1000 out of the dealer when a steel shard ripped my rear tyres and also ripped the plastic. Changed my tyres but not dared to take off anything else. The part is 41 usd but don't want the delaer to charge 200usd to just fix the part. Can you help.

I can’t describe it all that well via text, but it looks like a fairly easy process. Pull off the mufflers (I have a video on how to remove the mufflers). Then there are two bolts below the chain cover on the left side that need to be removed. On the right side of the bike, there are two bolts as part of the right foot peg that hold the fender on. Those need to be removed. Then there are two plastic pop-rivets behind the foot peg that need to come out. Lastly, there is a bolt and a bracket on the right side above the swing arm, below the passenger peg mount, which needs to come off. If you’re able to remove and install a rear wheel, this shouldn’t be a hard job for you. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I show how to do it in this video. You just remove the two screws on the back of the license plate light housing, the housing comes off, and the bulb can be removed/replaced. It’s super easy.

Nope, you just pull it straight out. Are you replacing it with an LED or a different bulb? If so, you can look at that bulb to see what the base looks like. But it just pulls straight out.

Could I use an LED bulb in the stock rear indicator, similar to the ones you fitted to the front?

You can use an LED, but it takes a different bulb than the front. I’m not sure off-hand which bulb it uses. Let me know if you have trouble finding the right replacement bulb and I’ll help you out.

I bought 2 sets of Inertia LED RY10W. Same ones Jonathan Long has linked for the front turn signals. They fit perfect in the rear ones as well!! I have a 2013 ninja ZX1000HD ABS. Also, I did not have to use that LED relay, so I will be returning it. I now have wonderful LED's in the front and back (both are same bulb) and also the Blaster X tail light with the turn signal capability as well. The LED turn signal color properly match the turn signal color of the Blaster X tail light. To replace the rear turn signal bulbs, all I had to do was to remove just one screw that pops off the clear cover and very easily exposes the bulb. The bike is now super awesome!!

Yes, you could just replace the bulbs with LED. I’m not sure which ones they take, but they are different than the bulbs in the front.

hey Jon, I want to do the same setup with instead a MotoDynamic fender eliminator, My question is, with this particular setup, will it work with my saddlebags and not hit? if it would clear the bags?, thanks again...…..

I’m not sure about Motodynamic, but I know that Yoshimura and R&G both say that their fender eliminators work with panniers. I would check with Motodynamic. The Rizoma signals are less wide than stock, so they won’t cause any issues.

It depends on where you are located. I use the website partshark.com whenever I need OEM parts. The US version of the bike comes with the helmet lock. The rubber of my turn signal became brittle and both of them broke of. They are now hanging by the wire. Do i have to take out everything as in the video just to replace the lights with the original?

I believe all 4 pieces came in the set. It's for mounting one pair of turn signals (either front or rear), and that requires 4 pieces.

So the led turn signal relay that you put on for the front led turn signals makes the back led turn signals flash correctly aswell ?

That's correct. The flasher relay, which is at the front of the bike, controls all 4 turn signals.

Torque house: I finished installing LEDs in my 2013 Ninja 1000 ABS and did not need to use the flasher relay...I do not think the ninjas equipped with an LED tail light requires it. This was an awesome coincidence for me.
