You guys can listen to what you want obviously but in my opinion it's always better to listen to the studio version first, then live versions. The studio version is the perfected song that the band created, how they wanted the song to be heard. The live versions were different evolutions of the original... awesome in their own right for sure but without the studio version as the basis you can't appreciate as much the nuances and changes in the live. The studio version of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is badass.

The studio versions are a snapshot in time of the song as it existed, on the day it was recorded. Once it was put down on vinyl, the songs grew and evolved in concert, and took on an entirely other level. You cannot "know" Led Zeppelin by studio recordings only - so much of their legacy is tied to their improvisational, epic live performances.
@2199SPUDMAN
@2199SPUDMAN Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. IMHO You should have the gold-standard studio version first to appreciate the variations done live. Plus, there are effects and arrangements done in the studio than cannot be replicated live -- that's actually the source of much the "improvisation" you hear. ;-)

Jimmy Page had established himself as a professional studio guitarist, where he learned and utilized every style of playing for various projects. While working studio sessions all week he picked up and taught himself the recording art of using the studio as an instrument. He got restless in the studio and joined “the yardbirds” where he learned the lay of the land in terms of touring… where the audiences were ready for his vision. He knew that America was ready, and American FM radio was ready and needed content. The yardbirds broke up and Jimmy retained their killer manager, the legendary Peter Grant, and he also acquired the right to use the name and fulfill the remainder of tour dates. Jimmy Page began to build his masterwork, he knew that a vocalist was going to be the fist place to start. He originally wanted a well known signer named Terry Reid, but Reid infamously turned Page down, however he did recommend a 19 year old relatively unknown signer named Robert Plant. Page met Plant and they hit it off, they shared many influences and got along well. Plant recommended his old friend and band mate, and absolute powerhouse of a drummer named John Bonham. Page heard Bonham play and knew he had to have him. He had to convince Bonham to leave his current steady paying gig with another band. Around the same time another London session musician named John Paul Jones contacted Page, who he knew from studio sessions together, contacted Page and offered his services… and just like that Page got one of London’s finest professional musicians, a multi instrumentalist from a family of musicians… he could arrange and compose. He was a master on they keyboard, along with any stringed instrument from his home on Bass guitar to a mandolin… his groove was perfect and his feel was naturally perfect. The band was complete. The fist time they all four got in a room and played together, they all immediately knew that their lives were going to change and that they had something of immense power and potential. Page got them in a studio and in 30 hours they recoded and mixed the entire first album. Page was the sole producer and songwriter, and he payed for the sessions himself. With a complete album in hand and payed for Grant and Page were able to secure a contract with Atlantic Records that was unheard of at the time, and gave the band (page) complete creative control over every aspect of the music, production, the album packaging, and the marketing… The rest is history. Keep going, you will see.

This live version was in front of a small audience in Denmark and was one of their first live performances. He is considered one of the best. This was before he had damage to his throat. After 1973, it was different, but he was still unlike anyone else. Jimmy Page, the guitarist formed the band. He had been a studio musician for a number of years and was in the Yardbirds. When they disbanded, Jimmy wanted to form a band, and started out looking for members. His first choice for singer was Terry Reid, but he’d just done an album and he recommended Robert Plant. Robert was a longtime friend of John Bonham, the drummer, and they had to convince hime to join, he was making a living already drumming. John Paul Jones, the bassist and keyboards, was also a studio musician and had heard Jimmy was forming a band and his wife encouraged him to contact Jimmy. They got together to play, and Jimmy said they were magic from the beginning.

the band was formed by Jimmy Page who had been playing guitar since he was 13 and had been in skiffle bands , was one of the highest regarded session musicians in London and had also been in the yard birds touring extensivley .this is why he is so good. He can play any style of guitar and is also very experimental innovating by playing guitar with a violin bow - wait till you get to dazed and confused. John Paul Jones had also been a session musician so they knew each other. Robert plant and John Bonham came form the same area of uk and played in various bands, sometimes together. Plant was 19 when LZ formed. The first choice for vocalist was a man called Terry Reed who worked with the rolling stones amongst others. He had just signed a record deal so could not do it, he recommended Plant who in turn recommended Bonham. Jimmy Page produces the band and has done all the remastering over the years. He and jones financed the album /tour so no record company was involved so they had total creative control. They refused to release singles or allow songs to be cut down for the restrictions of radio. They were groundbreaking. The more you listen the more you will appreciate the brilliance of each member but the magic is in how they play together. Enjoy the ride ....

Man, i gotta agree with the others--as good as it is to see Zeppelin live doing ANY song--the studio version of THIS song BLOWS the DOORS off this live performance. Almost no comparison, imo. You want passion and drama in Plant's voice? Studio. More effectively powerful downward chord progression? Studio. Better demo of Page's guitar (acoustic and bluesy electric licks)? Studio. We'd love to see u react, but even if not, do selves a favor and double back and check the MAGNIFICENT studio version!

This is one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. I've seen the video of this performance and really enjoyed it even if the sound quality was a bit "rough". Plant was mesmerizing even at that young age, eh? Yes, he is considered one of the best rock singers of all time, and John Paul Jones is considered one of the greatest bassists in rock history. It was good to hear that you plan to listen to the studio version (I wouldn't even mind a reaction to it from you for comparison purposes). It has, of course, much better sound quality and Page does some incredible acoustic guitar work that I think you'd really enjoy, even the vocals are better. ;) The next song, "You Shook Me", is another of my favorites and looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Thanks for another great reaction. :)

This song was originally written and recorded by American folk singer, Anne Bredon in 1959. It would then be re-recorded by a different American folk singer named Joan Baez in 1962 and it would be Joan's version Jimmy Page heard. When Jimmy was assembling the band, he had Robert come over to his home to discuss musical tastes, etc., so he could see if they'd be able to mesh well. This song was one of the few they bonded over and Jimmy told Robert he had an idea of re-doing this song to make it heavier and harder, which resulted in the version of the song you heard.

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" -- this souped-up psychedelic blues stomp is a cover of a song first recorded by Joan Baez in 1962. She heard songwriter Anne Bredon performing the song on the radio and began performing the song herself. Jimmy Page heard her version and wow, there you have it! I'm guessing the live version you're reacting to is the Danish TV recording? If so, that performance was recorded before the album was released in the US, iirc. Whatever the case, it's LZ very early in their career. Check out "How Many More Times" from that same performance. Fire!

I don't think J Baez heard Anne Bredon play it because she never credited her on the song. It's said she heard a friend of Anne Bredon play it and the friend forgot to mention whose song it was. Joan Baez then cited it as 'traditional arr. Joan Baez' (meaning no known author). Jimmy Page didn't find out until later (after LZ first recorded it) who the author was.

Ah yes, the deadbeat daddy anthems of my day, he's gonna leave her when the morning sickness starts, when the swelling finger show.😂 That comparable voice you're looking for would be Steven Tyler of Aerosmith's early years. Aerosmith - Kings and Queens. 1977

Bassist John Paul Jones. You never see him because he’s always in the background. I never knew why they didn’t show him up front. Of course, Plant, Page, and Bonham always deliver.

New subscriber and love the Zep reactions! Have to say, for live performances you HAVE TO check out their song “Since I’ve Been Loving You” live at Maddison square garden. They are all GOATs at what they do honestly.
