Jonesy’s bass REALLY DOES carry this song. His playing can NEVER be overstated. Another one of Zeppelin’s “B-sides” he carries is “Travelling Riverside Blues”.
@Tbirdhaynes5 ай бұрын
Totally agree with your statement about JPJ! He is 100% every bit as valuable and an integral part of this band. Could Zeppelin not had Jones or Bonham or Plant or Page as a member and still been a band and still have created decent music? Probably yes but without just one of them, they would have not been Zeppelin and had such a driving, lasting and influential impact on music all over the world. Lightening struck, they were able to capture and bottle it and take advantage of it.

@brucefollett81176 ай бұрын
This song was originally the B side of the Immigrant Song single and did not appear on any album until Led Zeppelin dissolved after John Bonham's death. Thus, this song was extremely rare during the '70's and into the '80's. Some underground radio stations played it occasionally and those lucky enough to have the single could hear it, but many Zep fans didn't even know of its existence until much later.
@Mahnamahna11005 ай бұрын
Yep. Ordered the 45 single from music land in the mid 80's. Took about three months to get.
@tektoniks_architects6 ай бұрын
For many, many years, the only way most people heard this song was on the radio, every once in a while. It kind of became an underground, "cult" favorite. Of course much later on, it was released on remastered and compilation albums....but for decades it was a hidden gem.

Thanks for doing my pick, touched that you love this one! And yes, it’s not one of their biggest yet still a great one… And yes it is a beautiful song and it’s acoustic guitar and mandolin but just add John Paul Jones and John Bonham and it’s still rocks big time! And I think this is one of Robert’s greatest that really shows off his range and his dynamics from soft to loud… You’re probably beginning to notice that his voice evolved and changed quite a bit through the years with Zeppelin. All of the touring took its toll but he always did his best with what he had. But for me in the early days, I think Robert peaked in 1970 and 1971. He had all of that power and range, but he also had such great phrasing and subtlety. It’s beyond me why they did not include this awesome song on their third album. Love you guys and love the reaction! ❤❤❤
@w.geoffreyspaulding65885 ай бұрын
Yeah..he’s done a great job of having a successful solo career with a “damaged” voice. In 1969-1971 or 72, he was untouchable. After the wear and tear, he had to change his style a bit but I think he still stayed in the top 10 rock singers….just my opinion.
@EdA15 ай бұрын
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Absolutely. He had some rough times in the 70s, especially during the American 75 tour but as I mentioned, he always did the best he could do with what he had. In terms of his range the 98 tour with Page was pretty remarkable how well he was able to do some of the earlier Zeppelin stuff. So he did get some of it back. But yeah, Plant from 68 to 72 was amazing!
@Daisychain19625 ай бұрын
I’m just curious and would love your opinion…do you think this song is serious or is meant to a little humorous?
@EdA15 ай бұрын
@@Daisychain1962 In my opinion, it was definitely not meant to be serious, but I wouldn’t say humorous either. I just think it was meant to be fun. In those early days, not only Zeppelin but many bands came up with lyrical ideas to support the song, but it was really about the music. What I mean by that is so many of those songs, especially in the early days are about problems with women and relationships and being burned by a heartbreaker or in this song a street corner girl. Believe me, Robert Plant didn’t have any problems with women back in the day lol! I think these lyrics were intended to tell a simple fictional story and again were a vehicle for Robert to express his vocals. The lyrics could’ve been all about climbing Mount Everest, and he still would’ve made a song out of it. Don’t get me wrong the lyrics fit perfectly with the mood of this song. But my point is they’re not meant to be taken seriously like All of my love, which was a tribute to his son who passed at the age of five. It’s just meant to be fun. I think it’s a remarkable song for Zep in that it’s got almost a pop chorus and it’s very upbeat and I think it should’ve been on the third album.
@Daisychain19625 ай бұрын
@@EdA1thanks for your response…I guess “fun” is a better description than humorous. The first time I heard this song, I put it on repeat for hours. I love Robert’s voice in this song. I never purchased Coda on vinyl so I was unfamiliar with this song until a few years ago. Thanks for requesting it!❤
@Shaun-ed4fz5 ай бұрын
All through the 70's, and 80's the only way to hear this song was if you bought the "Immigrant Song" single... This was on the flip side... It was a real treat to hear it on the radio back then... It was FINALLY released in 1990 on their first Box Set
@sicotshit70685 ай бұрын
About Robert’s vocals, to hear him speak it’s surprising to hear what comes out singing. He has a beautiful speaking voice, soft & also pleasant to hear, I could listen to him talk for hours. With singing, the amazing range tone texture & the way he adds in his unique phrasing, definitely great at giving you goosebumps. I don’t think other singers, have the magical touch he does.
@w.geoffreyspaulding65885 ай бұрын
Hey Ronnie! During the pandemic, I discovered his podcast, and I actually used it to help me go to sleep. His speaking voice is so soothing…just lovely. I listened to every interview I could find..and there are dozens. I actually FID listen to his voice for hours. Developed quite a crush on Mr Plant fir a couple of years….Brian May’s speaking voice is lovely too. I think that Brits who grew up through the 50’s were taught to speak more softly than Americans. Perhaps it’s a class thing.,,I don’t know……maybe working class was different. But I’ve noticed that many of the OG British band members, when they were being interviewed, spoke more softly than we do. Younger Brits, not so much.
@sicotshit70685 ай бұрын
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 I have listened to 1 or 2 of his podcasts. It’s just the way he belts it out singing, you wouldn’t guess his talking would be soft & soothing. I’m not saying real loud, just louder, or he’s saving his chords for singing. Jimmy & JPJ talk pretty softly too, so maybe you are right. Hell I still have a crush on Robert.
