"Houses of the holy" is a reference to the music venues they played at, where the shared energy between them and all the people in the audience created a powerful communion among everyone there. In fact, it could happen any place where a group of people came together to have a shared experience, as he sings "Can I take you to the movies, can I take you to the show?" There's also a lot of sexual innuendo "Let me wander in your garden and the seeds of love I'll sow", etc. There's also a bit of caution in getting swept up by the experiences "There ain't no use in crying, it will only drive you mad. Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had?"

The odd thing is that this great song is not on a prior Zep album named.....???? "Houses Of The Holy". As I said as a rock radio DJ on air many times years ago, "It doesn't have to make sense. It's Rock N. Roll!".

I don't have a lot of time to comment tonight, but really want to give my 2-cents on what you said about wondering if the guys may have been on some kind of spiritual journey or something during the making of this album.... IMO, that wasn't necessarily it. 🤔You gotta think, when they recorded their 1st album, Robert and JPJ were only 20 years old and Jimmy and Bonham were barely 24!!! That is EXCEPTIONALLY young to be catapulted into the Rock world the way they were!!🤷♀️ They were LITERALLY growing up together, learning about themselves and the world, whilst becoming the legendary rock band that they are and creating their 8 legendary studio albums all simultaneously.... To me, each album shows their actual growth from young adults, to full-fledged adults, husbands, fathers and MAJOR Rock Stars all in the span of 10 SHORT YEARS!! That's some pretty big stuff for 4 young rebels (as Robert and Jimmy once called themselves!😂) Just my thoughts for whatever it's worth! lol!! Love this song (and every Zep song!) and loved your reaction as always.👏👏👏 Your appreciation for each and every song and attention to details like noticing the change/progression in each album is a joy to watch!!🤗 Thanks for all you do Biz!!😎 Peace, light and love....❤ P.S... I don't know if that was completely coherent (I'm SUPER tired!) but hopefully u got the gist!! lol!!

This song is SUPER TRICKY to play. Jimi is playing in a ditterent time than Bonham so hear Jimi catch up at the end of each phrase. Plus we have a lot of suspended notes in the chords. Like 7ths and 13ths. Jimi is the Master of Diatonics . 2 note chord progressions. This is basically Blues style. With everything else thrown in there. All Good!

This is one of my favorites. And they weren't religious at all. So please don't get that mistaken impression. In My Time of Dying was an old blues song that was actually called Jesus make up my dying bed, or something like that and he just went with it it's almost sound poetry but it is spiritual and so it's okay to use that word. But in this houses of the Holy refers to just the places where people intersect, he places a high emphasis on you know their interactions with the audience when they get together at shows, just in general how human beings are best when they get in groups and interact with each other.

But I love the whole combination of bass guitar and bonzo's drumming on this., they work like a machine once again and it's fun to follow the pattern, they mix it up at the end, but through the whole main part of the song, whenever they hit that heavy riff you are talking about, they always repeat it four times and on the first time it's just that straight syncopation thing which makes you Bob your head. Second time he does a little slight Ultra fast triplet thing on the hi-hat and maybe leaves a beat out somewhere else I'm not sure, and then John Paul Jones also does a little bass pickup like that. And then on the third time, they both work together to do that super lightning fast compressed triplet thing that just kind of puts a hitch in your step, a little extra pump of your ass while you're dancing. And then on the final one I think it's back to normal. And then at the end they start mixing it up but they're right together on it, either they practiced it that way or they are having eye contact and just jammed it out that way.

Finally, along the lines of don't mistake them for going through some sort of religious transition because they weren't. That's already been talked about but I just remembered another hilarious deal that you might find interesting for context. Apparently Jimmy Page was at least acquaintances with if not friends with Aleister crowley, a much older man who is known to be into devil worship. But if you really drill down, apparently, just like white witches today, the kind of devil worship he was into was still benign in some way. You would just have to Google it. But anyway because of that, they often thought that Jimmy Page was also into devil worship, laugh. So it's almost the opposite of what you're saying. 😀

@@watchbizmatik It was actually written for the Houses Of The Holy album but left off of it as Page didn't think it 'fit' with the sound. In fact, only about half the songs on Physical Graffiti were written for the album, the rest go back to recording sessions from their earlier albums.
