Modest Mouse is one of my favorite bands of all time and I highly recommend delving back into their discography. Start back with Long Drive (long album title), then check out The Moon and Antarctica, followed by Good News and We Were Dead (including Johnny Marr from The Smiths). They have decades of work and I like it all, but the records from the 90s and early 00s are some that I hold in very high regard. 🔥

you need to listen to the ape of naples by coil. its such a haunting, weird, and just unsettling album. The backstory is also really sad. Apparently one of the band members died in 2004, and the other man left in the group used left out live recordings and outtakes of his voice to make this album. its such a weird album, and it would be fun to watch you react to it

Boogie With Stu, was a spur of the moment jam session, & the recording tape happened to be running. Ian Stuart manager or something of The Rolling Stones stopped by Headley Grange, where the guys were living to write & record music. They were using The Stones mobile recording studio, they were waiting for JPJ. There was an old out of tune piano in the corner, & Ian started pounding out on the keys, Plant Page & Bonham picked up & started jamming too. That’s a big reason I really like the song, just some great musicians, jamming with a friend.

I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but let me give you context on 7 of the 15 tracks where the band dug up unreleased songs from prior albums Led Zeppelin III Sessions: 1970 1. Bron-Yr-Aur Led Zeppelin IV Sessions: 1971 1. Night Flight 2. Down by the Seaside 3. Boogie with Stu Houses of the Holy Sessions: 1972 1. Houses of the Holy 2. The Rover 3. Black Country Woman

In My Time Of Dying live at Earls Court (1975) is out of this world, especially the May 25th version. Yes both the 24th & 25th versions are different, & the May 25th is the best one, it’s 12:24 long. Page really kills the slide guitar, his & Plant’s improv, is so damn great.

Kashmir is the song the band is most proud of. About a trip through the desert, that Plant & Page took, on their way to a music festival in Morocco. The band had never actually been to Kashmir.

There's actually only a few songs on the album that were written specifically for this album. A good 75% of the songs from the album were basically leftovers from other albums' recording sessions - stuff like Houses of the Holy (previous album), Boogie with Stu (IV), The Rover (originally supposed to be an acoustic song on III), Down by the Seaside (IV) etc. This album would've been perfect without the "filler songs" but I'd argue they don't even make the album worse, it flows rather well. I suppose you gotta use leftover songs somehow

Honestly, your Led Zeppelin journey should end here. Their two follow-ups 1976’s “Presence” & 1979’s “In Through the Out Door” is unfortunately a fall from grace and is a far cry from the sheer magnitude they brought from 1969-1975. But if you’re curious where they went for the remainder of the decade and plan on doing a ranking, I totally get it

This albums does suffer from its everything at the wall approach. In terms of quality, it probably has some of Led Zeppelin's best songs. They also decided to sit them next to some (by Zeppelin standards) dog shit. A more brutal editor could probably have pared this down to not only Led Zeppelin's best album, but also their best album pound for pound.

For me, a terrible DLP: poorly and one-sidedly instrumentally produced, with endlessly repeating riffs and drums, and an often croaky voice mixed into the background, like other hard rock bands from the late 70s. Where are the inspiring solos and the unique, colorful blues voice of the earlier albums? Even with songs from other genres of music (page 2), this monotonous military sound remains, a listening pleasure for the one-sided, stubborn hard rocker??? For me, LZ had lost its musical atmospheric versatility and magic. Only side 3 (RP has Into The Light as one of his 5 favorite songs) and of course In My Time Of Dying are fantastic for me. In 1980 I saw LZ for the second time. On their last tour, LZ only played three songs from this “great” album, unfortunately not my favorites. I have to admit that the mix was more balanced instrumentally and the bluesy voice was fantastic again. So it's due to JP's poor production. 1/3 of PG's songs come from previous sessions. Back then it was chic for a big artist to release a DLP, a kind of self-realization. P.S. It would be a shame to leave out the last two albums, because each contains fantastic songs (some of them are musical journeys; Archilles+Tea are two other favorites of RP and me), but also some simple "terrible" skip songs, a rollercoaster ride . Have fun discovering good music👍🤞🤞🤞.
