No rock band - and I mean no one - can groove in such a deep pocket as Zeppelin. JPJ’s bass in this song is just killer. Jimmy Page’s production genius is evident here. It’s a simple riff and chord progression but sounds so damn cool because of the phaser/flanger treatments on the guitars that makes everything sound so fuzzed and blur together. It creates an effect of flying - like the Rover!

I think Robert meant that his girl was laying down asleep on the other side of the world....perhaps Zeppelin was in another country when this was written...they were traveling...hence The Rover. The above is sheer speculation, but that's my take for what it's worth.

A "rover" is someone who's been travelling, wandering, roaming, etc. By this point in their career, LZ had certainly done a lot of travelling and Robert is kind of marveling at the places they've been, the things they've done and seen but also begins to question the value of such a life ("Will it leave us anything to show"). Part of him would like to go back to the simpler days where "if we could just join hands". Such hints of dissatisfaction will continue to creep into the lyrics of other songs.

As far as lyrics go,occasionally Zepplin has some more profound and maybe deeper meanings,but most of us Zepp-heads just iam with the incredible vocals and instrumentation which is legendary.I never made much of a dive into the lyrics or their meanings,and half the time I couldn't understand them anyways.LOL,
