The cough and chatter at the end was left in to let everyone else know that it was recorded in one live take in the studio. No layering. Kinda like a “yeah. That’s right. We just did that. Eat your hearts out.”

This is a remake of an old blues/gospel song, Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927. Of course Zeppelin took that 3 minute song and made it into their longest studio track at over 11 minutes. I love Jimmy’s slide on this. The whole band is in sync. Epic stuff.

People didn't complain about religiosity back in Zeppelin's day. That's a modern cancel culture thing. Zep was just paying homage to their blues heroes and taking it to another sonic level, which is why it still sounds fresh four decades later.

Dude, “Trampled Underfoot”, “Wanton Song”, just groovin’. “In The Light”, “Down By The Seaside”, “Bron-y-aur”, put on the headphones, close your eyes and drift away. Beautiful. AND “Kashmir”? As others have mentioned, this song is a reworking of a song by Blind Willie Johnson. You did pick up that this song is a jam; they didn't have an ending written when they recorded it, so the coughing by Bonzo at the end was left in. They liked to occasionally leave the mistakes so the listener could feel like they were there in the studio with them when it was recorded.

I love the way Page puts a phaser on everything on this record. This song, The Rover, Kashmir etc. In his hands it just created a powerful, trippy sound, like sounds whooshing across the soundscape. That dude was a flat out rock composing, recording genius man.
@eddiepotemri1621
@eddiepotemri1621 2 жыл бұрын
This song is a great reminder of why you'll get so many different 'favorites' from this album. I'm sure this one and Kashmir will compete for the top spot, yet it's amazing how vastly different they were composed, arranged and recorded. Kashmir started with phrasing and drums... then got built layer after layer, including JPJ composing an arrangement for an Afghani six piece orchestra, until they created a masterpiece of composition and emotion. In My Time Of Dying was basically charted out and rehearsed a few times and then just captured after a few takes with the four guys jamming it out together... and it's just as great. It's incredible that one band could be that good at both ends of the spectrum... so I, for one, cannot possibly pick a favorite song from this album. The only comparison I could make is if you had a doctor who could go into a lab and spend weeks breaking down a genome and building DNA strands, and then go straight to the OR and perform precision brain surgery in real time without missing a beat.

This is basically a cover of Blind Willy Johnson’s “ Jesus make up my dying bed” Gospel song from the 1920’s I believe….. Zeppelin’s homage to Old man Willy …. Also note that “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” great song off their Presence album is again… Blind Willy original……. Influence over and over… one thing Zep knew was American Roots Blues …. They were just the best at electrifying the blues….

Definitely not a cover.... just an incredible homage to another one of Zep's idols. Each one of the guys in Zep were inspired by SO many different artists from many genres and era's.... I will never think of any Zeppelin song that they have been accused of "stealing" from others as anything more than epic homages! In essence, a new generation honoring their heros!! Thanks for not saying they "stole" this one like so many people have a nasty habit of doing. Kudos to you!!🤗😎

The album is a double LP, their only double LP. 4 sides of songs, some that had been around for years but never got around to finishing them. To me this is their Magnum Opus, their finest hour and "In My Time Of Dying" is their best song on the whole LP. Bonzo's drumming is so fierce as to render me unconscious. Page's almost possessed fret playing on the slide and Plant's tremendous vocals are each in rare form. JPJ laying down his usual solid, steady basslines. Bow down to the greatest hard rock band of all time.

To me, it was Jimmy Page and Bonzo who totally drove this song. That is just some staggeringly astonishing drumming. And he shows such discipline when he needs to and then he knows how to just totally go off and then bring it right back. And he plays so hard, it's a pleasure to listen to.

It's a redo of an old Gospel song I believe. This song was pretty much a hidden gem. It was NEVER played on the radio and to be fair, I pretty much skipped past it for more than a decade until I got a job that I could bring my music to work with me and out of laziness would play entire cds. Then it quickly became maybe my favorite Zeppelin song for many years. Still a top 3-5 depending on the day. For me, it was like discovering a brand new Zeppelin song. You really need to sample the 1975 live version of this song and Trampled Under Foot. Both are amazing live.

If I'm not mistaken the song come from an old religious chant that used to be sung while they were building the railroads and roads of America.. also John Paul Jones says the bass drum was ran through the bass amp while they were recording the song kickstand you get I do not exactly know how to say it but you can look it up and it should be out there somewhere. How exactly they got that sound out of the drum kit. The things this song is when I was a kid when it came out we had the Sansui turned on full blast when that first drum hit it about blew all your hair off. Everyone I know scared the crap out of them the first time they heard the song.

Biz - I've been away but back now and I'm so glad you've done some more Led Zeppelin! This song is actually traditional - based on several early gospel songs from the early 1900s - Blind Willie Johnson (Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmarknuMgLeiq9E) for one as well as Bob Dylan's version (link kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIiwZ62FedZ1nc0) THIS IS EVEN BETTER LIVE!! How they weave in an out of the various riffs - so good!! You know live is so different from the studio stuff. Maybe you'll check out a live version - Earls Court from 5/24/1975 is fabulous🔥🔥. Here's the link - hope you'll react to it 😁

So the content may be religious and you might feel a way about that, but it’s back to Leds roots of taking gospel or early black blues and bring them into rock and roll. This is one of my favorite songs. I’m a Christian so I’m familiar with all the imagery like Peter at the gate with his big book of names and making him check yours is there. Really is like bargaining with God when you KNOW your time is up and you feel guilty. ‘Surely I didn’t do no harm.’ And ‘I must have done somebody some good.’ I really like the first part ‘if my wings should fail me, Jesus please meet me with another pair.’ Because you know you aren’t good enough on your own and need forgiveness. Besides the deep meaning, the jam is historically awesome.

Hello Bizmatic, I've got a few new artists for you to add to your list, if interested. "America - Ventura Highway (1975) LIVE" this American rock band has an extensive collection of popular songs. and "Tony Orlando & Dawn - Tie a Yellow Ribbon (1973)" this song was about prisoners being released from prison being welcomed home. But in November 1979 the Iran Hostage Crisis happened and Penne Laingen 82, wife of US hostage Bruce Laingen 92, transformed it's meaning 52 Americans in the US Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage by Iranian students and were held for 444 days. And finally, "Harry Nilsson - Mr. Richland's Favorite Song/ One" (1971) (1/7)" Harry was Booed at a young age, when he first performed for an audience which frightened him so much, that it stuck with him. Which made him never perform a live concert again. But the Beatles recognized his genus and helped to bring him to the masses. A Big Thank you to the Beatles. I hope you give these a listen, I think you will enjoy them. Have a good day Biz~Take care

It's hilarious how this was played all over my neighborhood. Everybody had the badass Pioneer and the Alpine Stereo in your car and it was amped power boosted. And this song would just scream out the windows man what a good time to grow up. The radio didn't play a lot of these long songs so that's how people in those days found out was some crazy son-of-a-b**** blaring their stereo all over the neighborhood was the best ever.

This, and Since I've Been Loving You are, in my opinion, the 2 greatest songs in Led Zeppelin's catalog.
