The lyrics were based on Robert Johnson's 1936 "Terraplane Blues." A Terraplane is a classic car, and the song uses car parts as metaphors for sex: "pump your gas," "rev all night," etc.

Terraplane Blues. Robert Johnson but only the way Zeppelin can amp it up to 11

This takes me back to my high school days. 1975 was a banner year for rock music. In fact from '74-'76 some outstanding records hit the shelves.

From their 1975 album, " Physical Graffiti", great tune driven by the fabulous semi funk riff, with John Paul Jones on the clavinet. Admittedly they say this song was inspired by Stevie's Superstition, with a powerful staccato beat. Page played through a wah wah pedal employing a reverse echo on the recording. The wonderful driven riff and melody, with great vocals made this a fan favourite at concerts. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Just FYI, you can call them: "Led Zeppelin," "Zeppelin," "Led Zep," or, according to some scholars, "Zep." But never, EVER just "Led" except in the phrase "get the Led out." Those are the rules, but I'll let you off with a warning this time. 😉 Cordially, The Led Zeppelin Police. 😎

It does probably have the highest sexual innuendo per lyric ratio of any Led Zeppelin song, if you want to get mathematical about it. Like literally every single line. Every. Single. Line. Of this entire song is some automotive-themed double entendre.

And I agree. "Physical Graffiti" is a superb album, and quite possibly my favorite of theirs.

Glad you had the lyrics in front of you Harri. To me, Robert Plant was singing kinda like..... James Brown on this funky song. Maybe that is why I was so drawn to this song because I do hear the Superstition style clavinet from John Paul Jones. Great reaction Harri. Thank you.👋👋👋

@jamesscura712210 ай бұрын
@@HarriBestReactions Of course they played Superstition, but all types of music, all night. A incredible party jam. John Paul Jones was so impressed he immediately created this riff and you know the rest. Takes the duality of the words between a woman and a car. Paying homage to Chuck Berry for doing it with Maybelline. And, Robert Johnson before them with Terraplane Blues. The Godfather of The Blues. Zeppelin were also big James Brown fans as are The Stones. Particularly, Jagger, as he and James were friends for decades. Whenever called the greatest, Jagger always redirects the interviewer to James Brown.

The Lemon Song is Zeppelin's naughtiest. Physical Graffiti is a masterpiece double album. My favourites from it are Kashmir and The Rover, which has possibly my all-time favourite opening guitar riff. I get chills every time I hear it even almost 50 years later! Jimmy Page is the king of memorable riffs.
@dbdeg8810 ай бұрын
"The Lemon Song" really only has one stanza that's particularly naughty. However, it is very, very naughty. "Custard Pie" and "Candy Store Rock" are pretty dirty, too. And then of course there's "Whole Lotta Love", particularly when they do it live and really make the most out of Robert's talent for...umm...suggestive vocalizations...(you know things are gonna start sounding like a very loud porno when Jimmy puts down his guitar and starts playing with the theremin).

This is inspired by an old Robert Johnson song from the 30's called Terraplane Blues. Both songs they compare a woman's body to car parts. A Terraplane was a popular car in the 30's. The one you always saw the gangster's driving. But obviously they sound nothing a like. For racy lyrics, check out Custard Pie from the same album. He is singing about a woman's "custard."
